Islamabad United is a Pakistani professional Twenty20 franchise cricket team that competes in the Pakistan Super League. The team is based in Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan and was formed in 2015 to compete in the first season of the Pakistan Super League. The franchise is owned by Leonine Global Investments through its sports entity Leonine Global Sports. The team is captained by Pakistan's most successful test captain Misbah-ul-Haq and coached by former Australian player Dean Jones. The team director is former Pakistani fast bowler Wasim Akram.

Franchise history

In 2015, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced that the inaugural season of the Pakistan Super League would take place in February 2016 in the United Arab Emirates.On 3 December 2015, the PCB unveiled the owners of five city-based franchises. The Islamabad franchise was sold to Leonine Global Sports for US$15 Million.

United despite starting the tournament as favourites could not perform well and with two back to back losses put United in alot of pressure first they were outclassed in first match against the underdogs of first PSL Quetta Gladiators which they lost by 8 wickets after losing the toss and batting first setting 128 after 41 and 35 from Misbah ul Haq and Andre Russell.[5] and then against Peshawar Zalmi which they lost by 24 runs.They then made a comeback by winning their next two games against Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars In their third match, kings won the toss and sent united to bat Islamabad scored 132 for 8 in their 20 overs.Khalid Latif was the top scorer for the Islamabad side as he made 39 runs from 35 balls In Reply Ravi Bopara was the top scorer with 32 from 19 balls almost win his side the match But Kings fell two runs short as they scored 130 for 9 in their 20 overs.Saeed Ajmal was awarded man of the match for his 3 for 27.[6] United in their fourth match beat Lahore Qalandars convincingly by eight wickets. In the 167 run chase, Islamabad's Sharjeel Khan 79 off 43 and stand in captain Shane Watson 79 off 47 partnered up for the biggest opening stand of the inaugural PSL of 153 runs.[7] They finished third in points table after winning 4 matches out of 8 as a results qualified for the play-offs where they faced Karachi Kings in the Eliminator.Islamabad ended Lahore Qalandars' journey paving way for Karachi Kings to qualify for the playoffs[8] In the eliminator they defeated kings easily by nine wickets thanks to Mohammad Sami's man of the match performance of 5 for 8 from 4 overs.United skipper Misbah ul Haq chose to field first, being unsure of the dew in second innings. His pacers did not let him down at all,as United restricted Karachi Kings to 111 for 9.In reply United due to fifties from Brad Haddin and Dwayne Smith achieved the target in 15th over of the game.[9] A magnificent maiden century in PSL's History by Sharjeel Khan 117 from 62 balls proved to be the difference between United and Zalmi.As United posted 176 for 3 against good bowling line-up of Peshawar Zalmi.In reply Zalmi couldn't do much about it as they were bowled out for 126 with two full overs to go.United, spinner Imran Khalid grabbed 4 wickets for 20 andAndre Russell 3 for 37 while Mohammad Irfan, Samuel Badree and Mohammad Sami shared a wicket each to bundle out Peshawar Zalmi to register an easy 50 run victory to reach the final against Quetta Gladiators played on 23 Feb 2016 at Dubai International Cricket Stadium. On 23rd Feb, 2016 Islamabad United won the final of HBLPSL 2016 against Quetta Gladiators by 6 wickets. [10]United were crowned the inaugural champions of the HBL Pakistan Super League after they beat Quetta Gladiators in the final by six wickets.Misbah opted to bowl first after winning the toss and the Gladiators,riding on the back of half-tons by Ahmed Shehzad (64) and Kumar Sangakkara (55), scored 174-7 in their 20 overs.Andre Russell who finished the tournament as leading wicket-taker took 3 for 37 from 4 Overs.In reply United Started really well Dwayne Smith (73) and Brad Haddin unbeaten 61 gelled to put up an 85 run partnership under pressure for the second wicket to help their team past the finishing line in 19th Over of the game.Smith for his quick 73 was the man of the match.Sharjeel Khan was the Leading run scorer with 300 from 11 matches while Andre Russell with 16 wickets from 10 matches was the leading wicket taker of the tournament.They won US$ 500,000 prize money.[11][12]

The team logo and name was revealed on 22 December 2015 in a ceremony held at the Polo Club in Islamabad. The logo features a lion.[13] The team's primary colors are red and orange Kit was revealed during team's launching ceremony held in Pak-China Friendship Centre.[14]

Theme song Chakka Choka performed by Ali Zafar who is the star ambassador of the team as well.Theme song launched in an event held in Pak-China Friendship Center.[15]
