Pregnancy is like an emotional roller coaster ride and many women will experience it in her life. Along with the emotional ups and downs, there are also considerable changes in your dreams. If you are pregnant, you must be experiencing more vivid and bizarre dreams than usual.

If you too are having crazy dreams lately, don't worry! You are not alone. Most pregnant women say that they are having dreams of travelling abroad, sex, talking animals, riding vehicles and sometimes, fearful ones about the baby-to-be-born.

Reasons of having such weird dreams:

Experts say that a woman experiences more vivid dreaming and dream recall during pregnancy than any other time of her life. Most dreams are related to her condition of pregnancy or the trimester she is going through.

According to Garfield, co-founder, the Association of Study of Dreams, the hormonal changes in the body bring a feast of dreams during pregnancy. Apart from that, a pregnant woman tends to remember her dreams in a better way. When a person wakes up just when he/she was having a dream, he/she remembers many details of that particular dream.

Is it normal to have such dreams?

Absolutely! Most pregnant women report having such vivid and colorful dreams and it is perfectly normal. This deluge of dreams comes due to emotional changes and hormonal fluctuations a lady goes through during her pregnancy. When you sleep, your emotions become more intense. In general, a human dreams most during his/her REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. In pregnancy, women have interrupted sleep and they wake up during the REM phase and thus, they remember most of their dreams.

Dreams during pregnancy are actually the reflection of your emotional and physical state. You will notice that your dreams change according to your pregnancy trimester. Your dreams will be about your thoughts, hopes and fears of pregnancy and the life after that. It's not only the expectant mother who experiences such dreams; sometimes expectant dads also experience crazy dreams.

Some common dreams women experience during their pregnancy

Driving heavy vehicles: Have you dreamt that you are driving a heavy bus, truck or lorry and that is becoming difficult to handle? Such dreams indicate that you are feeling difficulty in handling your new situation.

Water dreams: The next on the list is the dreams about swimming or related to water animals like tadpoles or fishes. Every human starts his/her life in a pool of water (amniotic fluid). So water dreams indicate that there is a new life inside you and the amniotic fluid has started forming around it.

Dreaming negative about your baby: Your emotional state makes you dream as if you are doing some harm to the baby inside. You will feel as if you have fallen from a height, you have left your child somewhere or sometimes you have lost your child. This is nothing but just due to an overflow of your affection towards the baby.

Dreams about journeys: Many women dream that they are set for short or long trips via airplanes and some may also dream about some unusual and complicated journeys via tunnels and corridors. These dreams can be simple to complicated depending upon the attitude you carry towards your pregnancy

Do these dreams have any meaning?

As such, there is no particular meaning of these dreams. They just reflect your excitement, fear and apprehension about all the changes happening to you in this stage. Sometimes, dreams also occur because people discuss some strange things about pregnancy with you. They share their own or their relatives' stories about having unusual children or babies with some genetic defects. Such conversations sometimes lead to fearful dreams.

If you have some doubts about having any genetic defects in your baby, talk to your doctor.

How can I handle these weird dreams?

Instead of fearing and relating these dreams to your real life, try to enjoy them. Share your dreams with your partner and ask him if he is also experiencing any such thing.

Some frightening dreams or the nightmares about the birth of the baby can make you upset. Discuss such dreams with your doctor, husband or family members.

It's true that you cannot change the future, but you can always hope and expect the best by staying positive.
