In this country its a bloody tamasha thats what it is

California doesnt allow for residency even in the 4th year of college (money grabbing leeches) in a state of 40 million people vying for 10,000 freshman seats, I guess its bound to happen

Ivy Leagues on the East Coast are a joke
50% of admissions are given away to artists, sports persons, "legacy" (Indian word id Chacha Mama Tau of the student went to the same Ivy League college) and "developmental" (hedge fund managers alias criminals that make over $10 million a year and endow a million or two to a college so their kid can get an admission)

The other 50% which is basically less than 5000 seats between 25 colleges is up for grabs for us mango people of 299,999,999 people

They say grades are important, then they say scores are important, then they say volunteering is important then they say "passion" is important, then they say "essay" is important

Ultimately they just screw you over anyway

I am not too worried, because our expectations are quite real
My 17 year old hates snow so there is ONE NE college he likes...

The US colleges are greedy and unscrupulous and have a way of getting away with any damn thing.

True about IVY league - my friends son - perfect SAT score, straight As, wonderful subject SAT scores, STEM school, tennis player, leads clubs at school, Yada Yada Yada ... But not sure he will be considered for admissions to Princeton, Cornell or UPenn - bcos he isn't blood related to any alumni 😭

Good luck to your son and you family ! are u ready to send him off to college

Yes Nisha, don't get into the rat race, it's really not worth it. If he does well as an undergraduate I am sure these so called ivy leagues will accept him for graduate studies and even then it's not a big deal. It's too much money. Send him to Canada, mothered are some really good universities here although as a foreign students he will again have to pay double what we as canadians pay...it's a rip off for foreign students. In fact I had the same worries for my daughter but the schools career counsellor sat me down and told me that even if they go to a smaller college in the beginning and later transfer to a big university it's fine. So don't worry.

And what is worse that in each of these applications they will first ask what's the family income! Bloody hell!

Nisha remember my BF in Denver I mentioned her kids did some kind of specialised one to one SAT coaching with some hand picked gent and they were pretty close to perfect scores.

I taught English to a kid here in Singapore that went to a Govt. School where he paid 10 SGD a month worked with Big fat SAT books that were hand me downs , spoke no English till he came here from Vietnam 5 years ago and got about the same. My friends kids are bright, grounded sweet hardworking kids, this one from Vietnam a survivor and a striver. It's sad that these kids cant have a level playing field. Legacy is not always compatible with merit is it?? 💔 oh yeah forgot to mention the Uni here takes SAT scores and you can save money in application forms if you don't have a near perfect score!

Leaves me in blur when I think what we can do for our kids. I'm more than happy to stay out of the rat race but I don't want my kid not to have options when we are both Not around! 😭Edited by blue5sky - 8 years ago
