You can call it a journey, an insight or probably a nostalgic affair. A run through of the lives of the top most celebrities of the country who has become a household name today and are no less than superstars. A show where the star, along with a very competent host (Roshan Abbas) will take you through his/her forgotten lanes of memory. A one hour story which will have all the necessary ingredients to compete with any soap on television with its own highs and lows. A show where you get to meet the people behind the star; family, friends, colleagues and mentors; where you get to meet the people who helped him; who trusted him and who stood by him. And above all you get to know your favourite star like never before, up close and personal!

An Interview with TV anchor Roshan Abbas

"Good avenues for formal training in TV anchoring do not exist in our country"
Posted on 23 May 2002

Roshan Abbas is one of the more popular hosts seen on the small screen today. Roshan first shot into fame as anchor of Public Demand, one of the few countdowns on TV to run for four years, and went on to present shows like Born Lucky, El look and Fair Play for various TV channels.

He also won the best TV Game Show Host award for
Family Fortunes on Star Plus and to his credit the hosting of the Tri Nation cricket series for Sony TV in Singapore. His new brainchild Encompass Productions, aims to become a one stop all pervasive media house. He has also floated a new initiative - workshops for aspiring anchors who want to make it big in the world of television.

In an interview with indiantelevision.com correspondent Amar, Abbas speaks of his evolution as an anchor and his plans for the future.

Excerpts:
.

How did you start off as an anchor?
I've been performing in stage shows in school since I was four. Later, while I was doing my Mass Communications from Jamia Milia Islamia, Usha Albuquerque offered me the anchor's job on a career show called Hum Honge Kamyaab. This came out of the blue as I was not planning on getting into a career in anchoring. But after Hum Honge Kamyaab, I got a lot of other offers as an anchor and there's been no looking back since.

What is required of an effective anchor?
An effective anchor needs to be quick witted, observant and adaptable to unforeseen situations.

Which are the areas one needs to work on constantly to improve as an anchor?
One needs to be abreast of what's happening around, to be in sync with the latest fashion accessories and the prevailing dressing trends. Besides, one should work on his/her wit. Basically, one needs to imbibe and absorb a lot more than what one normally does.

"An effective anchor needs to be quick witted, observant and adaptable to unforeseen situations"

Do you like to work with a ready script?
No, I've never done that. All my performances have been impromptu.

What are the factors you take into consideration before taking up a new assignment?
I look at two factors. One, how much does an assignment appeal to me and can offer me in terms of creative satisfaction. The second factor is obviously the money it gets me.

Does TV anchoring pay well?
It depends. It pays me very well but I can't be sure of all other anchors. Actually, a lot depends on your popularity.

Who are your favourite TV anchors?
Jaaved Jafferey, Shekhar Suman, Cyrus Broacha and last but not the least, Amitabh Bachchan.

What are the stylistic elements you've imbibed from them?
From Jaaved Jafferey, I've learnt a certain amount of mimicry. In Cyrus, I admire the ability to be as natural and effortless as one can be. I admire Shekhar Suman for the way he has maintained himself. One can't say whether he is in his early forties or the late twenties. I admire Amitabh Bachchan for the modesty, dignity and grace with which he carries himself.

Who are your favourite co-anchors? Have you ever co-anchored without a script?
I have enjoyed anchoring Public Demand with a girl called Kahkasha who used to be very sparkling. Ritu, who later went on to become Mahima Chaudhary, is one of my other favourite co-anchors. Yes, I have co-anchored without a script. That's not a problem. Once you know the content and once you relate well with your co-anchor, that's no big deal.

How has the Mass Communications course helped you in anchoring?
Well, it hasn't directly helped me in my anchoring but then being a TV anchor, knowing the camera angles and having an idea of when a break is going to be called, obviously facilitates a better performance.

What is the idea behind the creation of Encompass Production?
I have found most media houses to be specialists in either events, production or else the creatives. 'Encompass', as the name suggests, aspires to take up all these activities simultaneously and become a one-stop all-pervasive media house. So far, we have concentrated more on events but we are now producing two TV serials and a movie, which I will be directing.

What training do you recommend for aspiring TV anchors?
Well, primarily, I feel they should be well-read, more knowledgeable and have a more rounded worldview. Besides, one needs to work on his/her looks because today looks definitely matter. It is unfortunate that good avenues for formal training in TV anchoring do not exist in our country. I'm trying to do my bit on this front through a series of workshops. Besides, nobody can deny that luck plays a crucial part in your success or failure over here.

Where do you see Encompass Productions ten years down the line?
Having evolved as one of the biggest media conglomerates in the country.

Where do you see yourself ten years down the line?
Personally, I'm getting into film direction because that is what I'm trained in. Fortunately or unfortunately, the easy money that TV anchoring gave me tied me to it for far too long. But now, I'm fully charged to give film direction a shot. Ten years down the line, I see myself being a successful director of movies.

Life's like that

Zee's Jeena... is starting again this weekend, but under the auspices of a different production house, and with a different anchor. The original was flavoured with the sardonic charm of Farooque Sheikh, whose Urdu was a delight to hear. This time round, it's the flamboyant Roshan Abbas, who's yet to prove his mettle as an anchor. For starters, he seems to be having Rohit Roy as his guest. Does this indicate a slipping down the rungs for Jeena, which hosted mainly Bollywood celebs? Or does it reflect the growing importance of TV stars? Let's wait and watch.

By Alok Hisaria

How has it been hosting Jeena Issi Ka Naam Hai?
It was our first schedule and I enjoyed it very much. You get to meet people in a completely different environment. I have met Rohit (Roy) and Mandira (Bedi) at a lot of parties. But I didn't know them that well. Interviewing them in Jeena Issi Ka Naam Hai brought out a totally different side to their personalities.

Last season, the show had stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Sanjay Dutt and Rani Mukherji etc as guests. But this time around it seems that the show is focusing on television actors only.
I think the channel felt that in their last season they have covered almost 90 per cent of the film stars. Besides Satish Shah and Poonam Dhillon, there are not only television stars, but actors too.

But then there are a lot of stars like John Abraham, Vidya Balan, Ayesha Takia, Soha Ali Khan, Kunal Kapoor etc who have not been featured.
With time you shall surely see more film stars on the show. We would also be interviewing sports persons, pop stars et al.

But for the time being the focus seems to have shifted mostly towards television actors?
Nowadays TV stars are very popular and probably even have a far better reach than the film stars. A lot of personal things about a film star's life are being published every other day in the papers. People are quite aware of their lives. But  very few people would be aware of the life story of TV stars.

Does Jeena Issi Ka Naam Hai want to create a new identity altogether?
Since it is a brand new show, the environment is much more relaxed and casual. We have done extensive research into our invitees' personal lives. You will see that the actors and singers have all  gone through a lot of struggle to achieve stardom. It's about the small town people landing in Mumbai with dreams and shaping them into reality. There are amazing stories of survival to unfold. Rakhi (Sawant) maybe brash, but if you hear about her hardships you will be shocked. People will understand that a lot of hardwork goes behind the glamour.

Was Rakhi Sawant invited on the show to cash in on the controversies that she has been involved in recently?
We do discuss all aspects of a person's life before inviting him or her on the show. I don't think she was invited to our show to cash in on the controversies. It was more to know as well as find out why she is always associated with controversial stuff.

Do you see Jeena Issi Ka Naam Hai touching new heights?
Accessibility is the thing which draws people to television. If you want to relax in the evening having a cup of coffee, then Jeena Issi Ka Naam Hai is a nice show to watch and unwind. It is not a kind of show which would achieve high TRPs instantly. But with time it will surely go up. My sister called me up from Lucknow to know what happened in Rakhi Sawant's episode. People are actually eager to know about these stars' life.

What difference do you find between the previous anchor Farooq Sheikh and yourself as the anchor of this show?
Farooq sahab belongs to a cinematic background whereas I am more of a television person. Farooq sahab was much more formal while I have tried to bring a much more casual approach to the show.

The New Year strategists

The countdown for bringing in the New Year has started ticking! And everyone's come out with their planners to re-schedule their routine in order to celebrate the occasion.

So we set off on a mission to find out from our busy telly celebs where they plan to head for during this festive season. And here's what we leaked out from their diaries!!!

Roshan Abbaas

I am all geared up to celebrate the occasion to the hilt. I have planned a 10-day trip to Australia with my family and it would be to my favourite destination - Gold Coast. I am simply in love with the place. It's surely going to be fun all the while. Even my last year was fun when I celebrated the occasion with Arshad Warsi and Maria Goretti in Mumbai.

Mini Mathur

We have a particular ceremony for celebrating the New Year's Eve and its going to be the same this year too. It's mostly in the company of close friends. We organize a bar-be-que on our terrace and inaugurate the event by opening a bottle of champagne. The whole event turns out to be a very cosy affair.

Maanav Gohil

I plan to visit Canada with my wife Shweta on the 21st of this month. We will be there for ten days. After that we will be visiting the States for some time. We have already packed our stuff and are looking for a great New Year's Eve.

Nikhil Chinappa

I will be in Goa on that day. My plan is to host a beach party. It's a great event as 3000-4000 people usually turn up for the bash. It's going to be a lot of fun for sure.

Sumeet Raghavan

I am planning a complete surprise for my family this time around. My plan is to undertake a trip outside the country and have chosen Bali as the preferred destination. I am eagerly awaiting the fun.

Off the cuff with Roshan
Wednesday, December 06, 2006  23:59 IST
The anchor talks of being host on 'Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai'

Ansy Austin

As the host of the show 'Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai'(Zee), Roshan Abbas says he works hard to capture moods and emotions of our favourite and not so favourite stars.

What sets him apart from most other anchors is the fact that he never rehearses his shows before the shoot or live presentation. His hosting is apparently impromptu and spontaneous. Roshan explains, "I don't read the script even while hosting award functions. Be it 'Jeena..' or hosting any other show, I just speak what comes on my mind. All that I keep a note of is who will be entering next on the show."

Despite being occupied with his busy work schedule, Roshan says that he in his free time plays with his son and reads books. "I read a lot. The last book that I read was Freakonomics. I basically like reading business books"

Having just completed shooting for an episode with Hussain for 'Jeena...' he says, "Hussain is himself an anchor, so he knew what I wanted him to speak." He signs off saying that all he has to do on 'Jeena...' is to get the emotions and sentiments out of the celebrity on the show.

"One person's presence or absence cannot make or mar an event"

Shashi and Anu Ranjan have been conducting television awards under the aegis of Indian Television Academy for six years now. The scale of this exercise has grown by leaps and bounds with entries increasing every year. It is making their job more cumbersome but Shashi is not complaining. "I am happy that the TV business is growing. It's a healthy sign," he smiles despite courting a controversy this year ...
This time your awards got mired in controversy with Ekta Kapoor claiming that Kasamh Se got all the awards because your award show was to be aired on Zee...
If that's the case how come Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi got the award for best teleplay or two of her other serials bagged the best supporting and negative actor awards. These are baseless arguments. And why is she talking for STAR? Is she a representative of the channel? Incidentally, STAR Network bagged 27 awards. I think it is wrong on her part to drag STAR into it.
She has been quoted as saying that despite being in the city she didn't come to your function because she was irked with the nominations...
I can only say one thing. One person's presence or absence cannot make or mar an event. And if he/she thinks that he/she is above the entire industry, all I would like to say is 'get well soon'.
A day after your awards, there was another telly award. What do you have to say about that?
I can only comment on my awards function and I had the best turnout. 8000 people turned up for the event and 500 were film and TV celebrities.
It's six years since you started the event. Have you made any changes?
We were the first ones to create a platform for the television industry to come under one roof. Initially, we held it at a five star hotel with 1200 people turning up for the event. At that time we had only 40 categories. Since then we have increased the categories to 60 and now we are holding the event on a ground. It is as big as a film awards function.
Talking about film awards, do you think organising a TV event is more cumbersome?
Yes it is very cumbersome. The TV industry has grown by leaps and bounds, and the entries are steadily increasing every year. This year we had 2700 entries from 360 production houses. It is extremely time-consuming for the jury to watch each and every show. All the same I am very happy that the business of TV is growing. What I feel is a healthy fatigue.
How difficult or easy is it to get TV stars to perform?
We look at stars who are popluar and have the capacity to perform. So far, we have had no problems getting them. In fact, the stars look forward to participating in the function. It is amazing that even after a 12-hour shoot they rehearse till 4 or 5 in the morning.
Have the stars become pricey now?
It is obvious that as time goes by, everyone asks for higher prices. Today TV stars are in demand as they are doing commercials and shows. More arenas have opened for them but we were the first ones to show the light. Even our magazine Gr8 gives these stars a larger than life image.
Do you think people are so curious about the lives of TV stars that they would love to watch a show Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai devoted to them?
Yes, Jeena... is an extension of our idea to give TV stars a platform and larger than life image. They are household names and people obviously want to know more about them. Our episode with Rohit Roy was very good and the one with Rakhi Sawant garnered high ratings.
However, the future episodes will not be restricted to TV stars only. We will have a mix of celebrities from other fields like sports. How did you zero in on Roshan Abbas for the show? Did you approach Farooque Shaikh?
Farooque Shaikh had finished his quota of episodes. As for Roshan Abbas, we were looking for someone who was comfortable with the Hindi language and most importantly had the ability to make the guests comfortable. And Roshan has it. If you've watched the episodes you will see that there have been tears and laughter on the show. The celebrities have let down their inhibitions and that is Roshan's achievement.
Are you planning any other show in the near future?
Yes. I am producing another programme which is based on the TV industry. Talks are on with the channel and soon it will be on air.
There's been a lull after your film Dobara...
No, I am planning to start a film soon. Currently, I am just working on it. It's a comedy and I will start shooting from January-February.

Have you finalised the cast?
No, but it will be a mix of fresh faces and established actors
