From Rudra to Ram
Popular television heartthrob Ashish Sharma is set to play Lord Ram in the new series on the epic
Ashish Sharma is calm and composed. The excitement over the fact that he is playing Ram in Siya Ke Ram, a mega TV serial from Star Plus is yet to sink in, even though he is only a few weeks away from beginning the shoot. As of now, Ashish Sharma is more popularly known as Rudra from Rangrasiya and for his awesome dance moves in the Jhalak Dikhla Ja show. A student of the Anupam Kher acting institute, Ashish's love for acting brought him to Mumbai, instead of NSD that he thought he would join. "I always had this dream to act, so much so even as a child, I used to take part in Ram Leelas. Guess what role I played? Hanuman! Year after year I played Hanuman; I still don't know why," laughs Ashish as he breaks a part of the Alu Tikki that is served to him on the table. Ashish says he is still unable to come to terms with the fact that his childhood dream of playing Ram in Ram Leela is going to realise. "Ram Leela didn't happen but what a way to see my dreams coming true," says this 'Love, Sex Aur Dhoka' actor. He says his grounded upbringing and belief that he should lead life as set by examples at home have helped him prepare for his role as Ram. The entire cast and crew of Siya ke Ram are presently in Ramoji Film City (RFC) where most of the shooting will take place. The sets are opulent and once inside, it feels like you have been transformed into a real palace. At RFC, the cast was unveiled and the formal announcement of the show was made by the channel head, in the presence of the creative director and the cast. When the role was being discussed with Ashish, the creator of the show was clear that they want "to show Ram as one already perceives through books, posters or calendars. We all have this idea of Ram being a patient person besides being a great archer, a horse-rider and above all a compassionate king. There is more to him than that. He will be slightly different here," he explains.
"In preparing for this role, I needed to have my own long hair, instead of a wig. So for the past seven months, I have been growing my hair, learning combat skills and horse riding and then trying to calm myself down to play the character. To immerse in the character is very important to give a true portrayal of what one is playing on screen," he elaborates. From playing Rudra to Ram has therefore been quite a change for this actor.
What about other projects? Ashish is honest in saying he hasn't looked at any other projects, because, "Siya Ke Ram will leave us with hardly any scope to think of other projects. And I wouldn't want to work on something and not be whole hearted in it either."
Creative talk
After successfully giving a new image to the look of Mahadev', different from what we have seen in calendars, creative head of Star Plus Anirudh Pathak started thinking of narrating the Ramayan in new format once again. "We have seen different dimensions of Ramayan. So what was pending? Then we thought that we haven't heard the Ramayan from Sita's view point. She's not different from Ram. She was with him always and that was her choice. She was a warrior herself and her story was out of compassion and not a compulsion. This Ramayan is racy, technologically upgraded as regards to shoots, camera, sets, locations etc. If we aren't giving them the flavour of Game of Thrones' then there was no point in telling the Ramayan once again," says Anirudh.

Siya ke Ram : Ramayan for the kalyug'
Star Plus' new show Siya Ke Ram, unlike the name suggests, is not a take on Ramayan as we know it. It is in fact, the epic through the eyes of Sita. South actress Madiraksi who makes her television debut as Sita on the show, says, "We're not treating it like a mythological show. It's more like a show for the kalyug generation.
I didn't plan to get into television initially, but producer Nikhil Sinha's team chased me for seven months. He convinced me to come for a look test and that's when I realised how big the project is. My father is also a huge fan of mythological shows, so he pushed me for it."
How did she prepare for the role? "I watched Ramayana and read books on Sita."Ashish Sharma of Rangrasiya is part of the show as Ram. Talking about how he came onboard, he says, "I was offered many shows as well as films after Rangrasiya but I chose to television " after taking a four month break. Some filmmakers look at TV actors as sasta jugaad because we already have a fan following.
But I'm not interested in doing a project just because it's a film. When Siya Ke Ram came my way, I decided to do it even if it takes travelling to Hyderabad from Mumbai for one and a half years or however long the show runs. My wife and three puppies miss me terribly."

TV folks talk about Star Plus' "Siya Ke Ram"
The promo of Nikhil and Sohanna Sinha's Siya Ke Ram' on Star Plus is generating great reviews. It is the most talked about promo. All we can say is that if you loved watching Devon Ke Dev Mahadev', then you will become a fan of Siya Ke Ram'! The promo is a mash-up of the initial chapters of the great epic Ramayana featuring a young ascetic performing penance in the wilderness, an old wise man, the young Princes of Ayodhya and Princess Sita with her sisters enjoying their childhood. Actor Ashish Sharma has been chosen to play Ram in the show, while Sita's role will be essayed by Madirakshi Mundle. The show is being shot in a majestic set erected in Hyderabad's Ramoji Film City as well as across India in different cities and areas. Producer Nikhil Sinha has put heart and soul into the project and it is expected to be a big hit. The grandeur and production vales are very classy. No one has made such a show before on Indian television. Mahadev created history and we are sure this show will again create history.
We spoke to select TV folks about Siya Ke Ram Promo.
Shashank Vyas: It's fantastic and larger than life. It is very well shot. It gives same kind of feelings when Bahubali promos were showing. I am looking forward to Siya ke Ram'. I would personally like to give wishes and luck to all the team members, producer Nikhil Sinha and channel. Great work on Indian television.
Romit Raj : I think if Hollywood television has "Game of Thrones" we Indians can proudly show them "Siya ke Ram" in exchange. I have worked with Nikhil when he was a cameraman and when I met him after he became a producer he was the same person at heart.
Shivin Narang : I think they always come up with something unique. This promo is somethings I have never seen on Indian television . It's looking bigger than Bahubali. I'm looking forward to watch this show.
Saurabh Pandey : I have Seen Siya Ke Raam' promo. My friend Ashish Sharma is playing Ram and it looks like an epic film, like the film Bahubali. The production value is superb. I just love it and really looking forward to watch it. I wish my dear friend Ashish a lot of luck.
Sanjay Gagnani : I have seen the promo and it looked Grand. Very beautifully shot, it looks epic. It's an achievement for the makers as well as the TV industry that shows are being shot and made on such a huge scale. The promo looked like a film on TV! The promo looked like a film promo more than a TV show promo. And it's great that they have raised the bar since Mahadev and took it a notch higher even this time with Siya ke Ram'. If shows like these would be made by the makers and encouraged by the audiences, the day is not far when out Indian TV shows would be as strong as films in terms of creative and technical aspects of making.
Adaa Khan: I can foresee that it is going to be an epic show. The promo is amazing. I am sure they are going to give us some quality show. All the best to the team of Siya ke Raam'.
Srishty Rode : The graphics and special effects look like a film. Especially after Mahadev' we were expecting this only. I am eager to watch it.
Mrunal Jain: The promo looks amazing. The visuals are very promising. Producer duo have made an amazing show and I expect it to become a hit
Ajay Chaudhary: The promo is ver y appealing. Triangle film company makes fantastic shows. If Mahadev was a hit this show will be superhit

Simone won't be seen as Kaikeyi on the small screen
Saloni Bhatia,TNN | Oct 23, 2015, 12.00 AM IST |
Simone
Singh was supposed to make her mythological debut as Kaikeyi in the
upcoming show 'Siya Ke Ram'. However, it seems that things didn't work
out between the production house and the actress. We have
learnt that Simone will not be a part of the show anymore. Sources tell
us, "The makers were very keen on having Simone play the role of Kaikeyi
as she fit the bill. Since the show is being shot entirely in
Hyderabad, Simone wasn't too keen on shifting there. The producers are
still trying to convince her, while looking for a replacement."
When
we contacted the actress, she chose not to comment on the development.
"Why should I comment now? I didn't comment when I was offered the role.
I didn't accept the role and I wouldn't like to comment about it," she
said.

TV UpdatesWhen
a mythological show is about to go on air, there's always a lot of buzz
about how the actors have had to work on their physique to get into the
skin of the character.
While this is
not common for actors who feature in your daily saas-bahu soaps, it is a
given that actors on mythological shows will talk about their fitness
mantra. However, producers tell us that there is a clear demarcation
that exists between roles that require actors to beef-up, and roles that
require them to look lean. We decode the theory of the godly physique
for you.
Why do producers demand god bods? Producers
say that the toned bodies mythological characters on TV have these
days, are indicators of the paradigm shift that the industry has seen in
terms of actors' looks and appearances. Siddharth Kumar Tewary,
producer of Suryaputra Karn says, "It's not about having six-pack abs.
It's about the characters and the specific requirements of each
character."
Siddharth Kumar Tewary,
the producer of Suryaputra Karn, says, "In a story about warriors, they
can't be made to look thin. I can't ask anybody who isn't tall to play a
warrior. For mythologicals, you recreate a completely different world,
and if your actors don't look the part, the battle is lost. Your Ram
will look different from Mahadev. The earlier actors never needed to
have a good physique. Today, whatever you show viewers needs to be
aspirational. Even for Yam Hain Hum, the focus was to show a human side
of Yamraj and we needed a fit actor to play that role."
Nikhil
Sinha, producer of the upcoming show Siya Ke Ram and of the popular
Devon Ke Dev - Mahadev, concurs with Tewary. "Whenever we have heard the
stories of kings or mythological characters from our grandmothers, we
have always been given this impression that these characters are larger
than life. They are very powerful, so this image has always been there
in our minds. That's why, if you are showing Duryodhan as a thin person,
the audience will never accept him. If you show a 5'7'' tall man as
Hanumanji, the audience would never accept that.
That's
why any actor who has to play such characters has to work on his
physique. If you don't connect with the character, you will never
connect with the story. Even if you look at the actors of the earlier
Mahabharat, they were no less than six feet tall. They have always cast
big guys. Our earlier heroes - Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, Amitabh
Bachchan - didn't have six pack abs. But with Salman Khan, fitness
became a technique. It's not only about TV - even in real life,
everybody is working towards such bodies," he opines.
Ram and Mahadev will be different The
fact that chiselled bodies are the need of the hour doesn't mean that
every toned actor can play God, say makers. There are differentiating
physical characteristics that define characters. Abhimanyu Singh,
producer of Sankat Mochan Mahabali Hanuman, says, "The image of God is
ingrained in people's minds because of calendar art. Your casting is
extremely important for a mythological. Before we decided on Nirbhay for
Hanuman, we went for many look tests. While when we're casting for Ram
or Krishna, you look at calendar art and try to stay as close to it as
possible. When you are casting for Mahadev's role, you have to ensure
that he looks extremely chiselled, because he's a god who lives in
nature and is bare-bodied. Krishna and Ram are both avatars of Vishnu
and are more divine. They don't require a six-pack, but the characters
demand a slim and tall physique. The reason we chose Mohit for Mahadev
was that when we saw him dressed as Mahadev, he looked close to calendar
art."
About the different aspects
required for different characters, Sinha says, "Mahadev is raw power and
Ram is subtle power. That's the difference you will see between Mohit
Raina (who played Shiv in Mahadev) and Ashish Sharma (who will play Ram
in Siya Ke Ram). If you put both the people in the same frame, Mohit
will look like one who possesses raw power. He has broad shoulders and a
calm face. Ashish looks very calm and has a lean body, lean face and
straight hair. I go completely into details when I cast actors. With
Mohit, I had told him that I want big shoulders and I told him to work
on two parts - the deltoid muscle and the calf area. With Ashish, I
asked him to lose fat from his body and get a lean physique."
Chiselled physiques means staying in touch with current demands Producers
say that since gymming has become so important, the small screen's gods
also reflect the trend of staying fit. "In calendar art, the warrior
gods are all very chiseled and have a great physique. With time, people
have become more conscious of their physiques and appearances. Most of
the actors have a good physique and that helps in replicating calendar
art. In fact, we are making an animation film, Mahayodha Ram, and most
of the characters have great physique, even in animation."

mythological tale of Ram and Sita, albeit from Sita's perspective.
The show titled Siya Ke Ram, will offer viewers a fresh perspective on Ramayan.
"Star Plus wants to present Sita as a multi-faceted woman with a mind of her own who was Ram's ardhangini in
the true sense of the word, thus making her relatable to every woman of
today. Sita continues to be relevant to this day and we want to pay
tribute to the modern Indian woman by presenting Sita's inspiring
story," said a channel spokesperson.
The first look of the show
encapsulates the scale and grandeur of the epic, while highlighting the
key differentiator of a Sita who has a point of view.
Siya Ke Ram has been conceptualised by Aniruddh Pathak, who brought Lord Shiva's legend to TV through Mahadev.
The story has been envisioned and created by some well-known writers namely - the best-selling author of Asura and Ajaya, Anand Neelakantan and Subrat Sinha - along with creative consultant Devdutt Pattanaik.
Post Mahadev, Triangle Film Company will also be producing Siya Ke Ram for Star Plus.

Promo Reviews:
Siya Ke Ram Promo Review: A visual feast
After
Devon Ke Dev...Mahadev, Nikhil Sinha is back with another mythological
drama, Siya Ke Ram. The project has been talked about since a while
because of its sheer scale. So, we were eager to see its promos.
It
opens with the sight of a lush coniferous forest and it's a pleasant
sight. Then, we are treated to a visual of a huge palace. The aerial
shots resemble the ones taken in SS Rajamouli's Baahubali. Like the
film, this serial has also been shot in Hyderabad. It looks like the
makers have paid attention to the VFX and it has come out well. The sets
look lavish but are not garish, which is a welcome change. Shots of the
sweeping landscape make the promo more spectacular.
Siya Ke Ram
focuses on the love story between Lord Rama and Sita and tells the story
from her perspective. This is the first time when the Ramayan is being
narrated on TV from Sita's angle. It will apparently talk about her
love, struggle and tryst with destiny.
The little girl who plays
Sita looks quite sweet. It should be noted that the styling of the
characters in Siya Ke Ram is quite simple and have a touch of
authenticity about it. The background score is also decent.
Siya
Ke Ram will have Ashish Sharma of Rangrasiya fame as Lord Ram.
Midarakshi Mundle plays Sita. The ensemble cast also includes Tanvi
Madhyan, Prithvi Hatte, Bijay Anand, Yukti Kapoor and Bhargavi Chirmule.
It will go on air from November 2,2015.
Siya Ke Ram' Promo: Looks nothing less than an epic Hollywood film in grandeur!
The
first promo of Nikhil and Sohanna Sinha's Siya Ke Ram' is just out.
Words have failed us to describe how good the promo looks. All we can
say is that if you loved watching Devon Ke Dev Mahadev', then you will
become a fan of Siya Ke Ram'! The promo is a mash-up of the initial
chapters of the great epic Ramayana featuring a young ascetic performing
penance in the wilderness, an old wise man, the young Princes of
Ayodhya and Princess Sita with her sisters enjoying their childhood.
Actor Ashish Sharma has been chosen to play Ram in the show, while
Sita's role will be essayed by Madirakshi Mundle. The show is being shot
in a majestic set erected in Hyderabad's Ramoji Film City and it set to
go on air November 2, 2015 onwards. Going by the impeccable detailer,
it is safe to say that Siya Ke Ram' will redefine the mythological genre
in India.
#PromoReview: Star Plus' Siya Ke Ram
When a mythological show aims to recreate the Ramayana from Sita's perceptive, it's already a winner in our eyes.
Star Plus' Siya Ke Ram opens
with a palatial setting, surrounded by luscious green trees, majestic
horses and kids playing around without a care in the world...yes, half a
second into the show and you feel that you're watching a big-budget
Bollywood flick. The sheer grandeur makes you want the promo to last a
while longer.
Siya Ke Ram,
produced by Nikhil Sinha, recreates the epic tale of Ramayana from
Goddess Sita's vision than Lord Ram's. It's essentially her love story,
her battle, and her tryst with destiny. Would Tulsidas' magnum opus be
any different if he had narrated it from Sita's angle?
What
we loved about the promo was that the young Sita was dressed like any
other girl without overbearing her with jewelry and heavy lehengas.
That's a nice touch, which makes the show more relatable and realistic. A special mention to the background score that lingers with us even after the promo has ended.
Watch the promo...you will definitely be sucked into the world of kings and queens, rights and wrongs, and good and bad...
The show stars Madirakshi Mundle as Sita, Ashish Sharma as Ram, along with Tanvi Madhyan, Prithvi Hatte, Bijay Anand, Yukti Kapoor and Bhargavi Chirmule. It debuts on TV on November 2, 2015.

Times of IndiaSimone
Singh to play Kaikeyi in her mythological debut: Actress Simone Singh,
who has so far played the quintessential elite mother exuding oodles of
glamour, has now turned her attention to the mythological genre. Nikhil
and Sohanaa Sinha's Siya Ke Ram will see her essay the role of Kaikeyi,
probably one of the most misunderstood characters in mythology. Informs a
source, "We have seen different versions of the epic, but this version
of Ramayan will be seen from Sita's perspective. It will highlight
Kaikeyi as a warrior, a facet that's now forgotten with the many
interpretations." Simone chose not to comment on this.

Star Plus' next biggest venture, Siya Ke Ram will
surely be the talk of the telly town in the days to come. Recently we
at Tellychakkar.com had given our readers information about Ashish
Sharma being in contention to play the coveted role of Ram in the
Triangle Films show.
And now, we have some more exclusive piece of news for our readers.
Well what we hear is that actor Abhishek Nigam is apparently going to debut on the small screen as the young Ram in the series.
Wondering who Abhishek Nigam is?
He is none other than child wonder Siddharth Nigam's (Ashoka) elder brother.
A
source shared that the makers wanted to rope in Abhishek and now after
his look test, the channel has in all probability given him a green
signal.
When we contacted Abhishek's mother, she replied, "Yes
Abhishek has been approached for the role, and he has also given the
look test. But we have not received any confirmation from the makers.
Hence, nothing is final as of now."
Our efforts to reach out to the Producer Nikhil Sinha and the channel spokesperson were in vain.
Will Abhishek get to taste success on the small screen just like his younger brother Siddharth? Only time will tell!!
