Sudha was life and in her death too she gave life

Before I put my analysis first and foremost let me applaud Dharmvir Bharti for writing such a book having the characters relatable 6 decades later. And thank you to Life ok and makers of this show for giving us viewers a 20 episode treat. Such series are the need of the hour which has its heart in the right place. It has characters that are flawed, but at the same time inspirational in their own way. We saw a Sudha who refused to live a compromised life, we saw a Pammi who was independant, we saw a Binti who made best use of the oppourtunity that came her way and we saw Chander a man who has immense purity of heart, yet ends up making a mistake for which he pays a heavy price. And in the world television where we have bahus who compromise to save marriage, men who abuse wives as their right are made protoganists this was refreshing. I guess 1960 was more progressive than 2015 😆  .
Now coming to my analysis. Sudha was the life of not only the show, but in literal sense she was life. She was that fragrance that could spread smiles and positivity all around. Her smile and laughter enriched the lifes of people around her, especially her father and Chander. And such a girl faced the harsh reality of life. The man she truly cared for was snatched away from her due to the social custom called caste. She was married and forced to live a life she didnt want.

Sudha couldnt bring any change with her life. She couldnt stand up for herself as the reputation of 2 men she cared most about was at stake with her. Given the social circumstances of those days the only way for Sudha to show her rebellion was by unwilling to live. Because the marriage was suffocating her and if she compromised on it , she will support the old school of thought that caste is the most important thing, but any rebellion on her part can bring only shame to her father's and Chander's reputation. As already we could see Kailash had his own suspicions on her character and for him she was a commodity.

Sudha knew each day she breathed was going to be difficult for her and her difficulty can destroy the man she loved. Which she was observing already.
Sudha by not paying much to her health condition has subconsciously taken the decision to die but at the same time decided to save Chander.

And she did that by her death wish. Through her death wish she broke the caste system asking her cousin sister to marry Chander. She was not satisfied. She not only kept their hands together, but extracted promise from Binti that she will take care of Chander. Then she made Binti touch Chander's feet and keep it on her forehead. Indirectly she showed what Chander was to her. her soul had treated him as her husband and her soul only belonged to him, and by making Binti doing it , she implied Binti is taking her place and she is giving Binti that place on her free will for Chander's sake. Because only Chander mattered to her as her husband will obviously marry second time post her death.

Sudha with her death proved her father's thought process wrong that only a person of the same caste can keep his daughter happy and with her death wish she gave a chance to Chander and Binti to live and prove to society inter caste marriage will work.

And in her death Sudha safeguarded both the men's reputation irrespective of the pain she got. She was the victim of caste system , the seed of which was inside her against her wish and that seed destroyed her. But in front of society Dr Shukla was a father who lost his daughter to the terrible tragedy and Chander was a man who gave life to Binti who had her marriage cancelled thrice.
Note that in those days a girl's marriage cancellation is a big thing and such girls rarely got good alliances, so in front of society Sudha wanted a life for her unfortunate sister and asked Chander to give it. Yes in Binti's case even getting a person from other caste is called luck.

So as long as she lived Sudha gave life and when she knew her life can no longer give life, she choose death to herald a new beginning and also a good life to her sister and the man she cared about.

Sudha made you cry in the last epi. Especially her last moments where the falshbacks show the lively girl was heart rendering. Her subconscious  choose death, still her conscious wanted to live and it was painful watch the young girl going  away like that.

Death of Sudha was the price Dr Shukla and Chander paid for their reputation.

@Shreya the beauty of Sudha's character was, she took nothing from Chander just like she said. Love is like the fragrance in flower.
Sudha remained the way she wanted. Her marriage was a sham and nothing of that remained. Her miscarriage ensured Sudha's legacy could only be seen in Chander and his success. And for Dr Shukla and his thought process that was the biggest blow. Sudha finally forced him to accept Chander as his son-in-law with her death wish, the very thing he didn't wanted and married Sudha to Kailash.
Even in today's society for the sake of reputation people do many such things, only to realize later the change which they could have stood for without caring for their reputation is forced upon them and by that time the change has extracted a heavy price.

@swetha Umang Jain lived in the show as Sudha. She carried to viewers every emotion of Sudha in a beautiful way. Her last cries, I couldn't take it. It was so so touching.

Thanks for this beautiful post .You describe everyone so well specially sudha .Last epi is heartwrenching but beautiful.Initially they were just ordinary characters but as the show progress they lived in you and after ending they cant get off from my mind. They are flawd but more impressive than so called perfect beta bahu of tellyworld.

@yuri beauty of show itself was those flaws in the characters. In other words the characters were human, they made mistakes, and they realized the mistakes also.
And the beauty was that instead of wallowing in the mistake and compromising on a life that they cannot lead, actions are taken atleast to give life a second chance in a proper direction.

Problem with telly beta bahu is that they try to perfect and in the name of sanskaar they live a compromised life, supporting all the illegal and regressive things as only that will prove them sanskaari.

Even if they commit mistake, CVs never make them realize they did wrong and that wrong has to be corrected. They try to justify the leads wrong action also. And that is the bane of Indian TV at this point.

@ shrurti agree with you telly beta bahu did everything whether it is right or wrong in the name of sanskar .Unfortunately they are damaging indian culture more than orthodox thinkers present in society.Tv has wide range and spread superstious things more than any othe medium. Sudha too married for saving reputation of two men in her life but she doesnt take anything in the name of sanskar

The sad yet inspirational thing about Sufhs is that despite not having the life that she should've had, her death affected so many people. I would even go to say that she died as martyr for a better future. She did not die in vain and it is because of people like her and stories like that we've become a less bigoted society (albeit we still are) and I think that's what so beautiful about this show.
