Bollywood review: Aishwarya's comeback 'Jazbaa' turns sadly underwhelming

Director Sanjay Gupta picks a South Korean movie to feed on Bollywood's current favourite topic about women's empowerment

While thrashing a rogue into subjugation, a cop orders him to spill the beans. "This isn't a Hollywood movie," he announces, adding that in "Bollywood, criminals don't have any rights." Ironic, this plays out in a movie borrowed from South Korea, and has no relevance to the sensibilities or styles flaunted in the movie industries the cop was hinting at.

Director Sanjay Gupta continues to borrow movies from other languages, with Jazbaa' a lift-off of South Korean thriller 7Days'.

It's about a celebrated lady lawyer, who is forced by her daughter's kidnappers to defend a rapist and murderer. She faithfully follows their plan, until her friend (and now suspended cop) joins her, and decides it's time to fight back.

It's evident why Gupta picked this film over others to remake. It feeds on Bollywood's current favourite topic - women's empowerment, and brilliantly ties in the comeback heroine's glorious mommy image.

But, these points appear rather superficial. And, that's a telling on Gupta's craft.

The power of mothers and their collective goodness and worth is amplified at every possible twist and turn, turning it into less of a crime thriller and more of a propaganda for mommy power.

Just like his earlier copies (of a handful Hollywood movies and even a Korean one), this one too is high on style, and low on grit or substance. He's focused more on the texture and tone, with cinematographer Sameer Arya colouring Mumbai in shades of blue and grey. Arya captures the leading lady in striking frames, in slow-motion and otherwise, making it an interesting showreel. There's also Gupta's staple car chases, with screeching wheels and blowing dust.

He, however, conveniently forgets to plug the many loopholes that this thriller sadly displays. Had Gupta and writer Robin Bhatt tweaked the script and build up on the intrigue and drama, it would've possibly uplifted our experience.

Writer Kamlesh Pandey's lines flaunt strange philosophies, some that evoke laughter, unintentionally of course. So, during an investigation, a mother draws a strange parallel to her daughter's life to the way she held her cup of coffee. Possibly a case of being lost in translation, we think.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan powers Anuradha Verma emphatically. The fact that the actress shares her reel image's "mommy power" theory just accelerates the on-screen transformation. Dressed in mostly black, with hair shifting from wavy to straight (depending on outdoors or courtroom), Aishwarya attempts to give Anu a no-nonsense edge. However, her blood-shot eyes, dramatic glares and high-pitched tone, reduces her effort into something staggeringly inane and forces us to remain sadly disconnected. Part of the problem, possibly lies with Gupta and his writers, who refuse to let us rally for Anu.

Irrfan Khan slips in as Anu's loyal sidekick. He's a seasoned actor, no doubt, and one who we greatly respect, but in here you watch him fumble and falter on so many notes.

Chandan Roy Sanyal, an actor who excelled in Vishal Bharadwaj's Kaminey', is reduced to be strange and make stranger sounds. There's a moment, when he whispers his past misadventures into his lawyer's ears with menacing mystery allowing a glimpse of his past (on-screen) glory. While Shabana Azmi has a lot of meat to chew on, Jackie Shroff, Siddanth Kapoor and Atul Kulkarni are left with parts that are dreadfully under-written.

Despite landing a great idea, Jazbaa' remains a shallow watch, where Gupta indulges his South Korean fetish but never challenges himself or his characters to create a world that could've been menacingly gripping.''

'Jazbaa' review: Aishwarya Rai makes a power-packed comeback

By
Meena Iyer
, TNN|

Rating: ***1/2

Genre: Thriller

Cast: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Irrfan, Shabana Azmi, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Jackie Shroff

Direction: Sanjay Gupta

Duration: 2 hours 3 minutes

Story: Anuradha Varma (Aishwarya), a reputed criminal lawyer, agrees to defend a convicted felon to save her missing daughter. What follows is a moral and social dilemma between th ..

Review: Aishwarya goes for the jugular in this crime thriller. Inspired by the South Korean thriller Seven Days, Jazbaa revolves around a divorced lawyer, who dotes on her pre-teen daughter. With a 100 per cent success track record, she knows how to get any criminal 'justice'. However, her world crumbles when her daughter goes missing. The kidnapper makes it clear that he is not interested in money. Rather, he tells her that the only way she will ever see her child again is to free a felon (Chandan) who faces rape and murder charges.

Enters Inspector Yohan(Irrfan), a decorated but suspended police officer, whose heart beats for this lady-lawyer. He accompanies her on her mission to ferret out missed clues and check out alibis.

Together, they meet the young murdered victim's mother (Shabana Azmi). They befriend her to learn more about her daughter's rape and brutilisation. As she fills them in with details of the gruesome act, Ash is tormented that she is actually fighting to free an animal! However, her maternal instincts overpower all sense of right and wrong. Into this mayhem comes a politician (Jackie Shroff), who is hiding a drug-addict son (Siddhant Kapoor). Fingers now point in yet another direction. As Ash attempts to piece the jigsaw puzzle together, the film takes some sharp curves and ends in a nail-biting climax.

Gupta, known to be sounder with technique than story-telling (many of his films have been foreign inspirations), has got it right this time.
Jazbaa's narrative has pace and power. From screeching car sequences to emotionally-charged showdowns between his accomplished lead cast; the film throbs. Which is not to say that there are no flaws. The green hue overshadows Mumbai's skyline. Aishwarya is rusty at the start but eventually takes charge of the dual aspects of her character. Once in the groove, her eyes breathe fire. Irrfan breezes past with clap-trap Kamlesh Pandey dialogues, such as - Mohabbat hai is liye jaane de raha hoon, zidd hoti toh baahon mein hoti. Shabana is flawless. Aishwarya has made a judicious screen choice after that five-year hiatus!

Aishwarya Rai's Jazbaa Box Office Predictions
Posted by: Priyanka Prasad Published: Thursday, October 8, 2015, 18:26 [IST]

Jazbaa movie starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Irrfan Khan will hit the screens on October 9th. The film will be seeing an iconic star making a comeback to silver screen post 5 years gap, which is bound to attract viewers. Jazbaa directed by Sanjay Gupta is a remake of Korean movie Seven Days, but there has been no talk or comparison since all the focus is on Aishwarya Rai making a comeback.

Apart from Salman Khan's Bajrangi Bhaijaan, it is Aishwarya's Jazbaa that has made so much news and caught the attention of the audience. Jazbaa (U/A): Book Your Tickets Right Away! Adding to that, the makers have left no stone unturned in the promotions. From Cannes to several Indian cities, the makers and Aishwarya ensured to promote the movie as much as possible.

From the looks of it, the trade experts have predicted, that Jazbaa will get a great opening with an 40-50% occupancy rate. Considering the fact that Jazbaa is releasing in over 2000 screens, the Day 1 collections will be around Rs 5.5 Crores and the lifetime collections will also easily cross Rs 50 Crore mark. With no competition for Aishwarya's movie till 22nd October, when Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt's Shaandaar is releasing, Jazbaa will for sure emerge a winner at the Indian Box Office.
