She held her plate with her left hand and picked out a spoon for her rice, he reached for fork
"You sing beautifully" he said
"Not really, I assure you a million Iy, u know women trained in Carnatic probably sing better than me" she giggled
"Did u get formal training?"
"Ya, since, I mean for 24 years" she made a face
"OH WOW! OH WOW" he stared stunned "i dont even know what it is to be able to get trained on something for 24 years"
"Its easy, if your parents drag, carry, tie u up and throw u in the car, stand guard outside the teacher's house, deny food, or tv, or new clothes, its very easy" she said with a straight face
He looked terrified at first and then burst out laughing
A couple people turned towards them
"U were kidding?" he asked gasping
She nodded, sending her emerald jhumkas into a back and forth tap dance
"Sadly I wasnt" she smiled her eyes twinkling
"U are funny and you sing beautifully" he said in awe
"And I can eat without a bib, only sometimes" she set her plate down and smudged a spot with tissue
"I dont think I have met you" she smiled
"I am a junior clerk at Sehgal Bhattacharya" he said casually, as if she knew everything about them
"A lawyer that looks like a soldier?" she smiled
"When u can be a singer that can look like a go(goddess?)" he stopped, his face turning serious, admiring her all over again
"What is a Junior clerk?"
"A guy that carries their case reports, books and their robes to court" he tried to be funny like her
"Oh" she nodded
"But seriously, it ranges from, helping clients select the right lawyer, planning their
appointments around case dates, negotiationg fees, planning the collection of fees, maintaining an
awareness and understanding of key cases, u know like this one" he gesticulated lifting his plate up briefly.
"So they will send u after us if we dont pay?" she smiled
"They are not always so beautiful though" HE HIT ON HER FOR THE SECOND TIME
II squirmed looking down at her plate
"Where did u go to Law School?" she asked
Xavier" he said with pride
"Niiice"
"Do u like Delhi?" she asked
"I LOVE IT" he said with a wideee grin
"Are u working on the case too?" he asked eagerly
"No I am just helping run some benchmark data, because the attorneys on the other side seem to be coming up with
some totally ridiculous allegations for theyr should be based on unverified sources of published data" she explained breathlessly
"Unbelievable" he said shocked
"Why?'
"I HAD no idea I was going to meet someone " "U know..., work together I mean" he fumbled again
"I mean u lied... u ARE involved in the case" he said conclusively
"Didnt they say, u cant win an argument with a lawyer?"
"U CANT" he said smugly
Amma walked over... the lawyer guy walked away, Rakshasan was standing there the whole time, behind her back watching... he went back into the kitchen
"We will leave kanna" Amma nodded at the lawyer as he passed
He paused making a connection, Amma was a gorgeous lady too...
"Iru ma, stay here the night no, give Akka and Athim a chance to be romantic" she giggled
"Po di.. she delivered what? 14 days ago? enna romantic, no more babies" Amma said sternly
"Ayyo ma... not every romantic encounter is for babies"
"EDU SERUPPA" (doon ek gaal par?) Amma ke upadesama?" (u are telling ur own mother abt birds and bees?)
II laughed hysterically hugging her
"Amma will u let me cancel my class tomorrow"

"ONCE MA" Ii shouted

II hugged her tighter "Evil evil amma" she inhaled the familiar scent of Amma's Godrej saree" (her "Godrej sarees" smelled different, like
pMadurai paatti did Amma left soap wrappers tucked in between her sarees, or her fave agarbathi wrapper... II shut her eyes and inhaled deeply)
"Ayyo kanna poo kondu vanden, did he get them out?" Amma said
(She brought flowers)

II straighetend. and stood up...

"All the idlis are gone, will u make more tomorrow, how about YOU BRING THEM?" Ii tricked Amma into her lair
"Po di... in the evening the Malai Mandir event is there" Amma mumbled
