I am here because of Kapil bhaiya: Sugandha Mishra

Singer, stand-up comedian and now an actress, Sugandha Mishra is Destiny's child. She started her career on TV with 'The Great India Laughter Challenge', which she says would never have been possible without comedian Kapil Sharma, whom she fondly refers to as bhaiya.

"I did my Masters in music from Guru Nanak Dev University where Kapil bhaiya (Kapil Sharma) was a year senior to me pursuing Masters in theatre. We used to go for youth festivals together; woh theatre ke liye jaate thay aur main singing ke liye. So, when the auditions for season four of ...Laughter Challenge was on and the director of the show was looking for girl performers, Kapil bhaiya suggested they go for auditions to Punjab, saying, 'hamare shaher mein kaafi talent hai'. So the show came to Punjab and selected me, Bharti and Rajbir Kaur. My family wasn't sure whether they should send me to Mumbai for a TV show initially, but Kapil bhaiya convinced my parents ki bhej do, mere risk pe bhej do, I am like a brother to her. If he would not have been there then I don't think things would have been the same for me. I am here because of him," shares Sugandha, who was in Lucknow recently to perform at an event.

Family oriented films only The latest feather in Sugandha's cap is that she has featured in a Bollywood film, 'Heropanti', which is the launch vehicle of Jackie Shroff's son, Tiger. "The movie revolves around a conservative family of Haryana and I am playing the sister of the female lead, Kriti Sanon. The movie is due to release in May. I am doing another movie whose distribution is handled by Rajshree Production and it is be based on college life," says Sugandha, adding that she is averse to skin show, and will only do family-oriented films.

Music is my priority But it's not stardom that Sugandha wants. In fact, before TV and films happened, she was committed to classical music. "Movies toh mujhe aise he mil gayi and I am doing them. But my focus is on music, my dream is to come up with a music institute in Mumbai in the name of my grandfather, who is also my guru, Pt. Shankar Lal Mishra. Through the institute I want to promote classical music among youngsters," she says. Sugandha belongs to the Indore gharana, and has sung for films as well, such as 'Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal' and 'Shree'.
