Film Review | Dhoom: 3
Katrina Kaif and Aamir Khan in Dhoom: 3' which comprises of bits and bobs from several American films
Uday Chopra's Ali, one of the recurring characters in the Dhoom franchise, perfectly embodies the new movie's attitude to locations, Caucasian actors and Hollywood-style action sequences. Writer and director Vijay Krishna Acharya's screenplay for Dhoom: 3 takes its cue from the vagabond character's wide-eyed wonderment at being in The Abroad, his tendency to reduce everything to his intellectual level, and his gee-whiz regard for his adversary's fleeing skills. When confronted with an American accent, Ali lapses into Mumbai street lingo, much like Dhoom:3 itself, which sallies forth boldly into Hollywood genre territory but resorts ever so often to longstanding Hindi movie contrivances to keep the plot ticking.
A still from the film
Dhoom: 3comprises bits and bobs from several American films"its vengeful magicians premise echoesNow You See Me, its scheming prestidigitator, interval-timed twist and emotional undertow are from The Prestige, its anti-big bank stance inspired by The Dark Knight Returns"but it's mostly Bollywood baloney. The story is set, embarrassingly, in Chicago, home to clueless Americans in general and unskilled extras in particular. Aamir Khan's trapeze artist Sahir has been repeatedly attacking the bank that had driven his magician father (Jackie Shroff) to suicide and leaving behind clues"in Hindi. Only the Mumbai Police's Jai (Abhishek Bachchan) and Ali are deemed worthy of understanding Sahir's message. And on it goes for 172 minutes, with some running time devoted to Pritam's unmemorable tunes and the rest taken up by biking stunts and chases that will appear stale and unimaginative to audiences familiar with Hollywood.
Khan, who was billed as one of the big draws of the latest Dhoom, turns out to be one of its biggest liabilities. Pushing his body to the limit but limiting his facial movements, Khan sets himself up for a year's worth of supply of parody through attempts to convey determination and purpose by knitting his brows together"his stern sprint down the side of a building, during which his feet miraculously don't touch the facade, is fodder for Hindi movie lampooners.

(From left) Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra find themselves in the unenviable roles of open-mouthed spectators
Bachchan and Chopra, who played key parts in the first part but were relegated to the margins byHrithik Roshanand Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the second, find themselves yet again in the unenviable roles of open-mouthed spectators to Sahir's brilliance. Which, as the movie progresses and lays on the twists, appear to be less a result of sleight-of-hand and intelligence and more a matter of convenience.Katrina Kaif's trapeze artist Aliya gets the worse treatment, virtually disappearing from the plot after stripping down to her skivvies for her job interview. The movie's real stars are the various stunt doubles, dancers and trapeze artists, whose collective energy occasionally lifts the film out of dross and towards something approaching entertainment.
Dhoom 3 released in theatres on Friday.

Movie Review: Dhoom 3

In 1987 a masterpiece called Hard Ticket to Hawaii arrived in theaters. Its story chronicled two Playboy models sent undercover to Hawaii to bust a diamond racket and battle a mutant snake. In one scene the villainous smugglers send a hitman who overtakes the hero's jeep on a skateboard while standing on his hands. "That guy must have smoked some Heavy Doobies", the hero remarks. Then the Skateboard Man pulls out a shotgun and an inflated blow-up bikini doll, appears suddenly in front of the hero's jeep, adjusts his ponytail and takes aim. The hero rams the jeep onto the Skateboard Man who flies into the air along with his doll, and the hero reaches out into the dashboard, pulls out a rocket launcher and shoots the Skateboard Man in mid-air. And then he shoots his doll too.

I had to enlighten you with this information, because the entirety of Dhoom 3 is a three hour long version of this scene. And like Hard Ticket to Hawaii, Dhoom 3 is legendarily stupid, ridiculously over the top, unbelievably hammy and so hilariously terrible, cheesy and contrived it's non-stop fun. Director Vijay Krishna Acharya's Tashan flopped back in 2008 because, believe it or not, it was way ahead of its time. Had it released today, in the post Rohit Shetty-Prabhudheva 100 crore era, it'd easily have made a few hundred crores. Acharya has been given a second chance, a humongous budget and he really lets his imagination go berserk with some Heavy Doobies:

Aamir Khan makes his entry by running vertically down a building, with currency notes flying everywhere and BGM that sounds like We want chocolate we want chocolate'.

Abhishek Bachchan makes his entry by breaking through a concrete wall in an auto rickshaw, then jumps over rooftops in the auto and then does Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible 2 bike stunts with the auto.

Katrina Kaif makes her entry by doing a Marky Mark Good Vibrations style five minute long aerobics striptease workout as an impromptu audition for an Indian circus act in Chicago.

Really, Dhoom 3 is Dhoom to the power of 3. It's 27 times as ridonkulous as Dhoom in every department. The longer it runs the more preposterous it gets, and you can't help but admire it for what it is. The action sequences were most certainly conceived during a drunk chor-police game that Acharya played with his toys one night. You get Aamir Khan driving a bike that turns into a boat that turns into a submarine that turns into a bike. You get Bachchan Jr tailing Aamir's bikeboatmarine while clinging on to the rope ladder of a helicopter. You get Uday Chopra wearing a Captain Jack Sparrow costume and chasing Aamir on a BMW in random corridors and ripping through product placement posters.

And don't you dare think there is no substance' in the movie. Prepare to have your mind blown - the villain in the film is not Aamir Khan, but banks. Yes, Dhoom 3 is a social commentary on the postmodern world being afflicted by the tyranny of bankers. It's deep stuff. In one scene a wicked man looks at the camera grimly and tells a destitute common man 'We are bankers. We understand the world of money'.

And since this is a Dhoom movie you get a ginormous buffet of bad acting, cheesy romance, dreadful songs and plot holes so big you could drive Van Damme's Volvo trucks through them. It's not fair to take pot shots at Uday Chopra because he's the only genuine element in the film - all of his jokes are self-referential. Bachchan Jr doesn't do much more than grimace a couple of times and walk around extremely determined. With her back perpetually arched, midriff perpetually bare and dialogue perpetually corny, Katrina comes off like a parody of an action movie heroine.

But Dhoom 3 will be remembered for being the point where Aamir Khan gleefully took a piss on all of the accolades he's ever received for being a good actor. He clearly worked extremely hard on his muscles but every dialogue he utters magically produces ham hocks around the screen. In the film he's either a) Too serious, and hence unintentionally funny or b) Completely barmy, and hence unintentionally funny. Aamir is a good dramatic actor, and a great comedic actor, but is not a commercial action hero. Someone needed to tell him to lighten up a bit, this is a Dhoom movie after all.

You may have predicted all of the above things, but nothing will prepare you for the barn burning twist' just before the interval. You can see it coming, but you desperately wish and pray for that to not be the case. But it does come, and you're left groaning in defeat, wrapping your face with as many palms as you can find. It's the kind of stuff you'd see in Hard Ticket to Hawaii and the twelve other films by the director Andy Sidaris, all twelve of which are available in a single DVD pack for $4.

DHOOM 3 Is An Intriguing Thriller

Pluses:

Aamir Khan as an actor leaves the mark in two contrasting roles, Katrina Kaif looks stunning despite very brief appearance, Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra good as usual, breathtaking visuals, edge action

Minuses:

Too much father son drama, boring songs, uneven editing, not so great climax

Critic Rating:

3.5/5

Business Rating:

4.5/5

Verdict:

Watch it for full blown masala entertainment

Detailed Analysis:

Director Vijay Krishna Acharya penned first two installments of 'Dhoom' but directed disastrous 'Tashan'. He got golden chance with 'Dhoom 3' and now its upto Aamir Khan to make a huge comeback at box office after 'Talaash'.

To start with, film had borrowed heavily from Hollywood counterparts in terms of plot. At the interval point, one comes to know that Aamir Khan has double role. And this thread of story is completely copied from 'The Prestige' - magician and double role. Film has nothing else to offer in terms of story and weirdest thing is that this time its more of revenge drama than heist which was the case in earlier two parts. A circus closed down and father died because of bank followed by revenge - this sounds a bit tacky.

1st half is good especially when Katrina shines on screen. But like most of Aamir Khan's film, its all about him and Katrina gets 3 songs and 3 scenes to showcase her beauty. A kiss on railwayplatform (Katrina had same with SRK on railway platform in JTHJ) and she is standing on the bridge in climax somewhat similar to what was she doing in the climax of JTHJ. Double role trick surprises you but this is not fully exploited in 2nd half as the romance starts boring you in 2nd half.

Performance wise Aamir as Sahil works wonder on screen and his intensity is fantastic. But as Samar he fails to deliver because it looks forced and manufactured than anything else. Still this is most accomplished work of Aamir in a massy entertainer. Abhishek and Uday are as good as they were in earlier parts. Katrina offers respite with her beauty but she has too small role. No other actor gets anything worthwhile including Australian blonde opposite Uday.

Direction of Vijay Krishna Acharya is compelling but he falters in writing specially in 2nd half. Climax is underwhelming and Samar's character gets undue attention and stretch. Pritam delivers another bad album and background music is nothing but ordinary. Ritesh edits well in 1st part but he goes on holiday in 2nd half. Cinematography is top notch and so is the action. Special mention for choreography of rather not so great songs.

Film will take a thunderous opening today and it should grow at all over the weekend. But how well film will perform in smaller centers and single screens that will decide its final outcome. 100 cr, yes and 200 cr why not beyond that will be a question which will be answered next Friday on the basis of trending of the film.

Go for this one if you love thrillers but don't expect too much.

Sukanya Verma reviews Dhoom 3: Mazaa Le!

Katrina Kaif and Aamir Khan in Dhoom 3Dhoom 3 continues the tradition of extravagance in adventure and expenditure by roping in the fastidious Aamir Khan as its latest star antagonist, writes Sukanya Verma.

The Dhoom brand has always been about the bad guy. It may not necessarily glorify evil but glamourizing its illegal and implausible actions takes precedence in the Yash Raj produced series.

If Dhoom worked John Abraham's Fast and Furious energy for a renewed take on the classic thieves versus cops theme, Dhoom 2upped the ante with its scale and a smoking chemistry between Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

Dhoom 3 continues the tradition of extravagance in adventure and expenditure by roping in the fastidious Aamir Khan as its latest star antagonist.

Realistically, of course, Dhoom is a fun albeit dumb franchise that is unapologetically nonsensical, intellect proof and relies on the shenanigans of its smooth, superficial villains and their hot pursuit at the hands of police officers -- deadpan Jai (Abhishek Bachchan) and dummy Ali (Uday Chopra).

Only this time Vijay Krishna Acharya (of Tashan fame) takes over Sanjav Gadhvi as director.

Ever since its first promo came out, know-alls drew visual comparisons to The Dark Knight, Now You See Me and The Prestige. They aren't too off the mark.

Let's just say, the crucial plot points/imagery of these fine films left a lasting impression on Acharya and Aditya Chopra, sharing the credits for Dhoom 3's story, which revolves around a circus showman (Aamir Khan) and his dramatic connection to two publically executed bank heists in Chicago.

Filmed extensively on location in the US, Windy City's towering landscape lends Dhoom 3 a unique ambiance, which Acharya cleverly showcases through his mercurial screenplay.

Unlike previous Dhoom devils who burgled for the thrill of it, Aamir Khan's ambitions are driven by one of Hindi cinema's most emotional, most enduring stereotype embodied with appealing emotionality by Jackie Shroff.

High on crackling chases, curious get-ups, transformable bikes, somersaulting vehicles, theatrical flashbacks and Tom and Jerry sensibilities, Dhoom 3 alternates between sentimentality, scheming, spectacular song and dance' spectacle and slo-mo effects.

Even though it doesn't dwell on subtext and there's no background provided for any character apart that of Aamir's (with some help from a sparkling Siddharth Nigam as his younger version), Dhoom 3 loads up enough ammo to fire through its nearly three hours long running time.

And this is the part where the mostly a dumb brand' remark rings true. The big reveal pops up at interval point. Ten minutes later, it's universal knowledge for pretty much everyone in the movie. Still, the makers choose to extend the (non-existent) suspense with a silly explanation and concoct a few more complications. Or perhaps I am just nit-picking in a film where the cops could have caught the thief in the first reel itself if they only bothered to note down his bike's number plate, where US government calls upon two local Mumbai cops to nab an American robber of Indian origin (and there's no outrage on television), where a chase begins in Chicago and ends in Switzerland and where, oh well, never mind.

There are two vivid reasons I indulge (and enjoyed) this I know-that you know-that I know (classic Abbas-Mastanism) is

a) because of the cunning and conviction in Aamir's delivery.

No matter how much he bares his gym-honed torso, he doesn't have the physicality of John Abraham and Hrithik Roshan. But he has a knack for making even the trivial seem significant. His studious, serious approach works well in the role of a man orchestrating every single event of his life. It's like getting inside his head and eavesdropping on the conversations inside. Talking too much about his role would amount to a spoiler. It also saves him his only criticism.

b) Katrina Kaif. She's the greatest special effect of Dhoom 3. Styled to perfection, the lady moves like silk -- smooth and effortless. Her stupefying acrobatics are highlighted in Vaibhavi Merchant's magnificently choreographed sequences, which include one of the most graceful, yes graceful, stripteases I may have seen on big screen.

Action and humour are the mainstays of the series. Though conspicuously low on the latter (no thanks to Uday Chopra's tired jokes), Dhoom 3 lives up to its title with all the over-the-top daredevilry at display.

Whether it's a BMW bike doing a Batmobile or riding over a thin rope like you thought only Rajinikant can or a groovy jousting moment atop a two-wheeler and that striking, unforeseen (to me at least)) climax at the majestic Verzasca Dam, there's plenty to keep the whistles blowing.

What isn't is Dhoom regulars -- Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra's much jaded jodi in buddy cop mode. Bachchan's sluggish tenacity and Chopra's doddering comedy stands out all the more in this start-to-finish Aamir Khan show. It's absurd to think they had any chance of outwitting Aamir even in their own franchise.

Can't help thinking the final scene is Aamir's idea of blowing a raspberry in their direction, in character or out of Dhoom. Mazaa Le!
