Let's raise awareness about child sexual abuse

As articles about sexual abuse of children run galore in various news mediums, my question to those parents and guardians is, why leave innocent, unsuspecting children in the care of men other than your close family members? Most families have that one uncle, who might have not 'oh so honorable' intentions towards children and young adults. As parents/guardians, it is our duty to look out for our children/wards because they themselves are too young to gauge such perverse tendencies in others. How can you explain to a 3 or 4 year old, what rape means? I am not saying that parents in charge should go paranoid and start suspecting every other man that they might encounter in their day to day lives, but we have to keep our eyes and ears open. We can never be absolutely sure about what goes on in the minds of others. Child predators/molesters/pedophiles will not go around carrying badges of honor. They might live next door, or be your colleagues or even work at the school your children go to.

1. Please teach your children the difference between good and 'bad' touch. Please do not encourage random people in malls/buses/parties to touch your children, even if it is something as harmless as pulling their cheeks.

Having grown up in a middle-class Indian society, I have observed how parents prompt their children to go sit on the laps of unknown strangers, in packed buses or trains.

2. Please be aware that often in such situations, your child might become a target of inappropriate touching and he/she would not even understand what took place. But such memories often surface later on when that child has attained sexual maturity and might haunt them for the rest of their lives.

3. If you are at a party/ reception, please keep an eye on the whereabouts of your children. Children are gullible and trusting and it is their trust that is taken advantage of.

4. Please be receptive to your child if he/she ever complains about a male acquaintance, however much trustworthy he might appear to be. If you refuse to trust them, they might never again come to you with their problems.

5. Please do not be too generous with your trust.

Closing your eyes will not make the problem go away. As unsavory as it might be, child sexual abuse is very much rampant in our society and we have to make a collective and conscious effort to fight it.
