When a great Hindusthani Classical singer sings for movies, the result is always fascinating. Naushad and Vasant Desai managed to present Masters from Classical music in their times. This has almost disappeared nowadays.

Thanx salilu fr the gr8 post 👏 . Will add somethng soon.

There is a HMV cassette of mid-1980s called "Classics from Films: Classical Artists Sing for Films." It has the following ten songs:

       Naushad: Paluskar and Amir Khan.

   2. Shabab: "Daya karo giridhar gopal"; Naushad; Amir Khan

   3. Mughal-e-azam: "Prem jogan ban ke"; Naushad; Bade Ghulam

   4. Geet gaya pattharon ne: Title song; Ramlal; Kishori Amonkar

   5. Sant Tulsidas: "Ram prabhu adhar";
       Ram Kadam; Bhimsen Joshi

   6. Bawarchi: "Kahe kanha karat barjori";
       Madan Mohan; Lakshmi Shankar

   7. Bhumika: "Mandar baju re"; Vanraj Bhatia; Saraswati Rane

Among the imp. ones omitted above are:

Amir Khan singing the title song of 'Jhanak jhanak payal baje' (i don't know any other Vasant Desai composition using classical singers), the other song from 'Mughale-azam'("Shubhadin aayo"), and the songs from 'Umrao Jaan.'

In Vijeta, there is a sequence in which Rekha is 'riyaazing' in the morning. "man aanand aanand chhayo...", a beautiful song based on Ahir Bhairav (i think). It was sung by none other than Asha Bhosle. it remains one of my fav Asha songs. There is an interesting anecote associated with this song... When Asha was scheduled to sing this song, she suddenly took ill. But she could not or i would say would not miss her schedule for anything. So she landed up at the studio with a high fever. And she stunned everyone present at the recording with a fabulous performance. Such is the commitment great musicians have towards their art

'ghat ghat mein ram ramaiyya...' sung by Pt. Firoz Dastur in 'Bhumika', MD Vanraj Bhatia.

a couple of songs ('shub ghaDi aayi...' and a tarana) sung by Parveen Sultana in 'Razia Sultan', MD Khayyam.

Songs of 'Pakeezah' set to music by Naushad include songs by Parveen Sultana ('kaun gali gayo shaam...')

Ali Akbar Khan played the sarod for "man re tu kaahe na dheer dharey" in Chitralekha. Even if you don't know who is playing the sarod, you cannot miss the sound of this instrument in this song.

Thanks Punjini. I know many classical instrumentalists have played instruments for the films. The list is big so let's restrict this thread to MDs and singers only
