Kavita Barjatya

Rajshri Productions…what can we write about the production house and the people behind its success? "We get spoilt while working with Rajshri," is the statement that is made by majority of actors and technicians who have worked or are working with makers. The house that is known to create larger than life family dramas has churned out some of the finest content on television and films alike.

In a candid interview with Tellychakkar.com, producer Kavita Barjatya, who handles the television wing of Rajshri, shared her piece of life with us. Excerpts:

Audience has always seen Kavita Barjatya as a producer, but how is Kavita in real life?

Honestly, I am a very simple person at heart being born and brought up in Mumbai in a joint family. Being part of a very conservative family, I have grown up with a traditional background and that's the reason we are very different and have our own status as a production house in this industry. We have maintained the dignity of this lovely profession.

How did television happen to Rajshri?

Few years ago, we realised that movie is becoming a risky medium and television is, somewhere, a growing means. So I thought to get into television. Finally in 2004, I joined Rajshri where I started to assist Sooraj Barjatya (his brother) and began to edit shows. Later on, I worked for many serials of Rajshri like Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki, Main Teri Parchai Hun, Pyaar Ke Do Naam Ek Radha Ek Shyam, Do Hanso Ka Joda, Yahan Main Ghar Ghar Kheli, Jhilmil Sitaaron Ka Angan Hoga and now finally Pyaar Ka Dard Hai Meetha Meetha Pyaara Pyaara.

When did you decide to don the mantle of an individual producer?

Well, that was also because of Sooraj. I was assisting him for many movies and gradually, I was wondering what I should do next. So one fine day I asked him should I assist you for another movie to which he asked me as to why don't I start up with something individually. He liked my work and creativity and therefore suggested me to start up something on my own.
So that is how I landed up as a producer for TV serials.

That means Sooraj proved to be a motivational force for you to take up TV?

I would owe myself to my mentor, Sooraj. He is my guru. He is the reason why I am sitting here today. He is my teacher, I learnt from him. He has been responsible for whatever I learnt in film or TV. And after a certain period, I wanted to learn more. We all know Rajshri is such a big name created by my grandfather who kept the production house on a height. I know that I cannot make it bigger but at least I see to it that I maintain that great position where today Rajshri is.

So far how has your experience been working as a producer?

My journey has been wonderful till now because hailing from a conservative family we never thought of our career. I mean I was not career-oriented. So Rajshri has been the learning process for me, whatever good things I have done for Rajshri and whatever I have learnt through my mistakes is for Rajshri. And to mention it, I find myself lucky as I was associated with good people around me till now. Hence, my journey as a producer has been an amazing one so far.

What difficulties have you experienced as a producer of television programmes?

The foremost difficulty, I would say, is that TV is a very crazy medium, one has to be on his toes all the while and it's very panicky. We have to deal with each and every aspect like illness, cut-to-cut schedule which should match the telecast date. So, one cannot avoid such kind of difficulties cropping up. We have to adjust being the head of the family.

An advantage you see in being a part of the small screen business?

As for as advantage is concerned, all I would say that it is such a wonderful stage for a team work to happen. We can expect the results of the effort immediately on small screen. We don't have to wait for so long as in films where we get the results only after the movie get released. Whereas on small screen, we get the opportunity to improve on ourselves. TV gives another chance for a show to do well.
