Veer Shivaji's weekend sojourn Continuing with its philosophy of presenting path-breaking concepts, Colors now showcases a historic magnum opus- Veer Shivaji.

The period drama, produced by Contiloe Telefilms, narrates the three-hundred year-old story of the revolutionary warrior king Shivaji and brings forth to the audiences the lesser known facts and achievements he made during his lifetime.

The show will touch uncharted incidents from his life, highlighting the relationship between mother-son Jijabai and Shivaji that became an integral part of Shivaji's fight for Swarajya. Veer Shivaji will recount events starting from Shivaji's growing years – the training in his childhood, to the warfare's and marvelous contributions he made in the history of India as the warrior king. The biopic will also present an important aspect of the legends story - his mother Jijabai, a driving force that inspired him and was instrumental in cultivating the spirit of bravery and humanism. It was under Jijabai's guidance and tutelage that Shivaji tasted his first success of acquiring a fort at the tender age of sixteen.

The show brings together the most talented set of Marathi theatre, film and television actors to essay the powerful roles from history. Playing the protagonist, the fearless hero of Marathas - Shivaji is Paras Arora. Portraying the visionary character of Shahaji Raje Bhosale, Shivaji's father is Milind Gunaji; Jijabai - Shivaji's mother, his source of strength and inspiration will be played by Shilpa Tulaskar. Mandar Jadhav plays Sambhaji, Shivaji's elder brother while the tyrant ruler of Bijapur will be played Ali Hasan as Adil Shah and Natasha Sinha will play Begum Huzur.

Talking on the launch of the show, Ashvini Yardi, Head of Programming Colors says, "Great warriors go down in history because of the legacy they leave behind. Veer Shivaji chronicles the making of the legend Shivaji, his growing years, how he was mentored to take on as a warrior king. We will explore the uncharted pages from the life of this young Maratha legend and bring forth inspiring stories for today's generation. Bringing a historical figure like Shivaji alive on our channel allows us to further our cause of providing meaningful entertainment for our audiences. Slotted for the weekends to build our weekend viewership, with Veer Shivaji we foray into the historical genre for the first time."

Shilpa Tulaskar aka Jijabai adds, "The show has its own meaning and Jijabai played an important role in laying down the Swarajya. It's a great role and the character is one of the iconic mother in history of our country. I am lucky to get such good role. Audiences will know the history of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and why he is known as Veer Shivaji. It is nice working with young and vibrant actor like Paras Arora who plays Shivaji."

Paras Arora aka Shivaji says, "It is my honour to play this role and I am getting to know lot of unheard facts about this hero like he used to love nature and so from morning to evening he use to wander around the hills of Sahyadri and his mother gave him that courage to lay foundation of Swarajya."

The show also takes audiences through Shivaji Bhonsle's life right from adolescence to his glorious rise as a leader which led him being rechristened as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Veer Shivaji premieres on September 2, 2011, and will be telecast every Fridays and Saturdays at 8.30 pm only on Colors.

He is the latest in the line of kids to be playing a historical figure and none less than Chhatrapati Shivaji. And Paras Arora knows that he has a tough journey ahead figuratively and literally. "On the day of my audition, the makers told me that I will have to do a lot of action and stunts on this show," says Pawan who was soon put through a rigorous training of sword-fighting and horse-riding. And why not? The role he is portraying was of a fighter who with his will and power created an independent Maratha kingdom.

The actor, who says that it is a matter of prestige to play a young Shivaji, saw a lot of movies on Shivaji Maharaj just to familiarise with the character. He says, "I had studied his history but just wanted to see how other filmmakers portrayed his style of walking, talking and gestures, so I sifted through many films from black-and- white to colour, Hindi to Marathi and also surfed some videos on the 'Net, just to make myself comfortable in his shoes."

Veer Shivaji, which is being shot at Naigaon, portrays the mother-son relation between Jijamata and Shivaji. It chronicles how she raised him and inculcated good values in him. Paras, who is currently studying in First Year Junior College, wants to pursue a career in acting and the historical is not his first outing, though it is his break as the main lead. Paras was earlier seen in Ramayan that aired on Imagine TV as chhota Ram. He was also a part of Miley Jab Hum Tum and acted as a slum kid in the film Let's Dance.

After costume dramas like Meera, Raavan Punjab da putter, Ramayan, Paras Arora is enjoying himself playing the title role in the new TV show Veer Shivaji.

The 16-yearld is glad that he's got to learn new things, thanks to this role. He learnt sword fighting and horse riding and while sword fighting took him four days to grasp, horse riding was much longer as he was scared of the animal. "I've seen people fall off from horses and that's why the fear," he says.

But, now they've become his best friends! Having learnt martial arts for six years, the action scenes aren't difficult for this young actor. Paras, who is getting a lot of appreciation for his performance, is an F.Y.J.C student from a college in Mira Road (Mumbai) and he does attend college as much as he can. It's a weekly show and it does have its benefits!
