This week, on September 10 and 11, as we celebrate ID with a special edition of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa singing superstar, it coincides with my one year of joining. So to celebrate this special, Ismail Darbarji, one of the most well known music director and composer of Bollywood will be the special guest for this episode. So its time to look back at his life, his compositions and what makes him different.
Carrying forward the concept of "unlike any other", Darbarji is known for his very unique style of music. Often credited in bringing back the charm of old Indian classical tunes, he mixes old with new style, in other words, blends Indian classical with modern tunes and every track that he composes is appreciated by fans and musical connoisseurs alike not only in India, but also overseas.
Some trivia about him:
In 2000-01, his music for the movie "Tera Jadoo Chal Gaya", though not exactly a hit, was well appreciated as he experimented with a different scale and tempo layout, much higher than his usual known range. The title track is a known proof for this genre.
He has given musical scores for a very limited number of movies, but his score in Devdas, also teamed with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is again highly appreciated and instantly catapulted Shreya Ghoshal into instant stardum with two well known tracks-silsila yeh chahat ka ans bairi piya.
Later in '05 his new style of score in Subhash Ghai's Kisna was also well received, though to moderate success. His recent compositions include "The Unforgettable" in 2009 and "Sindbad" this year.
Ismail Darbarji has been a part of many singing reality shows as a major judge or a guest judge and his comments on singing are straight from heart, precise, to the point and often inspired from real life. Thats what makes him different. His blending of modern and classical genres too is astounding.
