1. Which is the last best play you saw and why?|
Recently saw a Marathi commercial play called "JADU TERI NAZAR" based on Shakespeare's play, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM. It was such a perfect adaptation! Nicely written. Awesome music & mind blowing performances from everyone. Have seen it at Shivaji Mandir, Dadar. That venue is a decisive place for producers to find out whether their production is a hit or a flop.
2. A play you would like to see filmed. Why?
I don't think one should film a play because theatre is a different medium altogether. It is a live thing. You cannot interfere with live things like the theatre which has its own special features.
3. Your favourite play-character'
I have seen so many plays to date'that it is quite difficult to write about one favourite play character. But still I would like to mention all the three characters from the play ALL THE BEST. I feel proud to have been a part of this popular production for a year. I also consider it as the most hilarious play that has been performed on the Indian stage to date.
4. A play, which is over-hyped'
A few years ago there was a play called MUKKAM POST BOMBILVADI. It was an average play but it was tremendously overhyped. At the same time there was a play called MAKEUP that was far better than the other plays at that time. The play however was ignored!
5. A passage from an important play that you can recite'
From a play called NATASAMRAT- a milestone in the history of Marathi Theatre. The play is written by V.V. Shirvadkar. The passage is a pleasure to perform and is a dream for any Marathi theatre actor. So far only legends of Marathi cinema & Theatre have performed the title role but none have succeeded as much as Dr. Shriram Lagoo has. What a perofrmence!!! Hats off to him.
6. Have you read any interesting books/articles concerning the theatre? Why did you find them interesting?
Dr. Lagoo was a welknown ENT specialist besides being an actor. The book which he has written is called Vachik Abhinaya. It is one of the best books that I have read on the theatre.
7. If you have ever been a part of a theatre production/s, can you recall an event that was insightful, significant or simply humorous?
I have been a part of an English children's musical play called PUNCH-A-TANTRA since the last 3 years. We have been to many different places with the play. On one of our UK & Europe tours, we performed at Leicester, one of the cities in England. That show was arranged for deaf & dumb kids. We wondered if those kids would understand us. Before the show, a lady called Maria came in to meet all of us. She was an interpreter. She had received the script 2 months in advance & was prepared with it. We began the show. She stood at one corner of the stage and interpreted the whole play in sign languages to make the kids understand. We all were very amazed by the response we got. The best part is that on the following day we received few drawings from those kids as gifts. They had drawn all the characters which were in the play. It is the most precious gift I have ever received and that show has stayed with me ever since.
8. An important foreign production that you may have seen'
The West End musical, THE LION KING is the most remarkable play I have ever witnessed. It does wonders on the stage.
9. Your favourite director/actor/music or set designer'
My favourite director.... there are so many. But I admire Karla Singh, our director for PUNCH-A-TANTRA. She is an amazing and a talented lady. Prashant Damle is my favorite actor on stage and Mr Ashok Patki is my favorite music director. I really like the music that he did for JADU TERI NAZAR.
