Hritu Dudani: Playing Bandini is tough

We caught up with newcomer Hritu Dudani, whose first show Chehra will air this Monday. She talked to us about her dream to be an actor, her debut on the television show and her challenging role of Bandini, who is paralyzed, on the new thriller-drama.

A Sindhi by origin, Hritu was born and brought up in Mumbai and has completed her management studies. She says of becoming an actor, "Acting was my main interest. I have been doing plays from the time I was in school and college. Then in 2007, I decided to give acting a proper shot and so I went for many auditions. I had a choice between doing management and acting so I decided on acting. I was very keen to get into this field. In 2002, I was a Ms. Mumbai contestant. After that, I decided to complete my education. I am a B.E in electronics and I have done PGDBM, specialising in marketing."

Hritu was initially not aware that the lead character on the show was handicapped. She says, "But even when I came to know about it, I did not think twice before accepting the role. I decided to do it because I knew that it would be a big challenge for me."

In order to do a good job, the actress spent hours researching every nuance of the role on the internet. She says, "I wrote down all the negative and positive points about the character. I read about how a person who is paralyzed feels and therefore reacts to their disability. I also found out about wheelchairs available. After this, I wrote down how I felt I would react to the situation. Mamta ma'am (producer) helped me a lot too."

Even after this, Hritu still found shooting extremely tough. "This is a very difficult character to play, especially when you are doing it for the first time. It is not easy for a nondisabled person to play a person who is paralyzed. But I have mastered the wheelchair and I've also met a few people- on a New Year's Day, my society invited people from an NGO."

Elaborating on her character, Hritu says, "Bandini is a very strong and sweet character. She has taken her situation in a very positive way. She is independent and happy with her family."

Hritu believes that she is very strong girl in real life too, though she does have a few phobias, especially since she started shooting for the thriller-drama Chehra. "I do not get scared usually but the one thing I am afraid of is the dark. After I started shooting for the show, I am not even able to walk alone on the street at night. I feel like someone is following me. Our set, which is away from the city, adds to the eeriness."

Before she got her break on television, Hritu starred in a few commercials, the most prominent being the Pepsi ad with Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone.

Chehra, which starts this Monday, is replacing Aap Ki Kacheri at 10.30pm on Star Plus.
