MUMBAI: The saas-bahu saga will finally give way to a "legal drama" starring Kiran Bedi on weeknights' prime-time TV
On Friday, a two-judge bench of the Bombay high court dismissed an appeal filed by Balaji Telefilms against a single judge's order upholding Star TV's decision to terminate its 'flagship programme' Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Reasons for the dismissal would be given later. The last episode was aired on Thursday night.

Now, unless the show's producers Ekta Kapoor and her mother Shobha Kapoor decide to move Supreme Court, the always dressed-up bahus on Kyunki... will have to fade out of the screen without much ado. There was no indication from Balaji if they wished to take the fight further or legal fatigue has set in.

It was a day of colours in court as the vacation bench of Justice J P Devadhar and Justice S J Kathawalla sat not on their raised seats, but across a table where the counsels argued how the continuation of Kyunki... may or may not affect Star TV's leadership among channels. At the end of two hours, Star's counsel Ravi Kadam prevailed. His argument that the 30-day termination notice to Balaji to wind-up its storyline by November 10 was without malice and legally valid was upheld by the bench.

Kadam said the channel was paying Rs 27 lakh to Balaji per episode but in turn raking in ad revenue and "would not cut off its nose to spite its face". He denied Balaji's claim that the channel had not kept its end of the deal by promoting the show well enough. He said had the serial's producers given more footage in advance, the promos could have been better.

He also said Balaji's five other shows were still on air. But contending that the single judge earlier this week had "on a wrong application of law" dismissed its challenge to the termination notice, Janak Dwarkadas, Balaji's counsel, said taking the show off air would damage the producer's reputation, given that till October, Kyunki... was still among the top 10 soaps.
