Weekday fiction has been our Achilles heel, but we hope to turn things around: Ashish Golwalkar

Sony TV's Ashish Golwalkar in a candid conversation with IndianWikiMedia

By IWM Editorial
28 Sep,2017

Sony Entertainment Television, one of the major GECs in India, has always seen a seesaw scenario on the decisive ratings chart. However, of late the trend has been on the higher side, much to the glee of the channel top bosses who work round the clock to ensure sculpting of engaging, entertaining content.

Dynamic doyen Ashish Golwalkar, Senior Creative Director at Sony, is one individual who via his relentless hardwork and creative intelligence (over the years), has made the skyline of Indian television more shiny and shimmery, gifting smiles to each and every small screen lover.

Now, the team at Sony, after success of Kaun Banega Crorepati latest season, is gung ho on his upcoming popular series Super Dancer season 2.

Talking about the channel's recent good run, Ashish tells IndianWikiMedia: "It feels nicer since our growth is organic; we hope to rise even further as we have a number of interesting properties up our sleeve.

Talking about KBC which has led to this change of fate he says. "The format has always worked wonders for us. The super success of this season is gratifying. I guess what has worked apart from charisma of Mr Amitabh Bachchan, is the more pacey nature of the show. There are more questions and the focus is more on the quiz than anything else.

Also the new interactive feature has definitely helped in raising viewership, like people are playing along using the App. To play you need to watch the show, so that helps.

Interesting insights!!!

Moving on, Ashish is hopeful of the great run continuing with Super Dancer. "This is home grown property which is beginning to attract attention overseas as well. Last year we were the highest-rated non-fiction property. This year with the same judges (Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Anurag Basu and Geeta Kapur) and hosts (Rithvik Dhanjani, Paritosh Tripathi) we hope to go a notch higher as the talent found is too good.

Here he admits that the real challenge for Sony would be is to maintain its GRP once KBC finishes its eight weeks run. "Yes, weekday fiction has been our Achilles heel. But we hope to turn things around with new shows like Haasil, Porus and Prithvi Vallabh, we do agree that our numbers might get hit, but hope to cut the losses with the new shows. Hopefully, The Kapil Sharma Show will return, when he (host Kapil) recovers fully.

We point out to the new slick promos of the above upcoming fiction shows which are eye catchy. "These days it is essential to create a good enough buzz to sample the product. Stickiness will come if the shows appeal to the viewers. Promos do vet their appetite.

Talking about Beyhadh which will soon wrap up he says, "This property has done good for us. It was designed for six to eight months, but we extended it.

Last but not the least, he says, "Public feedback played an important role in the short second season of Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi a little bit of the story was left, so we decided to bow to public demand and complete the story .

Sony to focus on creating content for international markets
Posted on: 26 Sep 2017 08:53 AM Swagata Panjari

MUMBAI: Sony Entertainment Television (SET) is planning to create content that can be syndicated or sold in the international market. The negotiation has started with SET's Super Dancer 2', which is set to go on air from 30 September at 8 pm. Super Dancer', which debuted in 2016, not only made a mark among Indian viewers but also attracted the attention of international viewers. Sony Entertainment Television EVP and business head Danish Khan said, "Super Dancer' is the most indigenous format created by Sony and 24 Frames Production, and the most heartening part is that it is travelling across the world. In the next couple of years, we will have Super Dancer' in international market. Our next vision is to create content which can be sold internationally.

Currently, we are importing products, but in the coming years we are hoping to have surplus export. India is a culturally rich country and it is about time that we offer our content and new ideas to the international market. To support their vision, the channel has also started a sub-brand called SET Originals', which will feature shows that are home-grown, high in production value and reflect Indian culture. Through this brand the channel is aiming to create stories that reflect Indian values but have a universal appeal. The channel is considering all formats of international partnership from dubbing the content to remaking and syndication. "With SET Originals, we want to take Indian content across the world. It will be created in a lavish manner with large mounting and huge production design. We will be investing in the shows and it will be a complete home-grown format. Since English content is consumed in India a lot, we are looking to do the same with our Hindi content in international market. We will be dubbing our shows for international market besides remaking old shows. There will be syndication, as we are looking into all aspects of international partnership.

SET Originals will be slotted with the channel's original prime time. The prime-time slot for the same is not yet decided, though the slot will commence with the launch of the channel's mega project Prithvi Vallabh'. It is 40-episode finite series that will have a runtime of one hour.

Apart from creating shows with an international appeal, the channel is also adopting the style of finite series. The current and the upcoming line-up of SET's programming come with a set deadline. SET senior creative director Ashish Golwalkar believes that the viewership pattern is changing. "These days, most shows die a natural death in almost a year. We can't really say whether viewers' patience has diminished or there are some other reasons. But the shows are no longer long-lasting, so we have decided to focus on creating finite series. We will be focusing on urban aspirations, though mythological and historical series are consumed across markets, he stated. SET has planned a robust programming line-up which will be unveiled by the end of December. Following the channel's three basic requirements, all of the shows will be high in production value, will cater to different genres and is said to be rich in quality.

Khan commented, "Sony's strategy for the current programming is based on three pillarsvariety, novelty and quality. We are making sure that every half an hour offers a different genrethriller, horror, crime and nostalgia. We wanted to create family viewing keeping in mind the quality so we are investing in talent, technicians and technology to ensure that the quality of our shows goes up. We are ready to back the concepts that bring or offer novelty such as Porus' and Prithvi Vallabh' or Yeh Un Dino Ke Baat Hai'. The programming line-up will feature shows like Super Dancer 2', Haasil', Ek Diwana Tha', Porus,' Prithvi Vallabh and Dus Ka Dum' in 2018.

Super Dancer 2' will bring back Geeta, Shilpa Shetty and Anurag Basu on the judges' panel. The trio has selected 12 talented kids who will compete for the title. The dance reality show will be hosted by Rithvik Dhanjani and Paritosh Tripathi. Produced by Frames Productions, the 27-episode second season will run for 13 weeks. The channel is also planning to pull the plug on the recently launched comedy series The Drama Company'. The show will go off air by the end of October. While the dance reality show will grace the weekends, the channel's weekday line-up features Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi 2' at 7 pm, Mere Sai' at 7.30 pm, Vignaharta Ganesh' at 8 pm, Beyhadh' at 8.30 pm, Kaun Banega Crorepati 9' at 9 pm and Yeh Un Dino Ki Baat Hai' at 10.30 pm. The romantic thriller Beyhadh' will go off air on 6 November and will be replaced by Alchemy Productions' thriller Haasil'. The show marks the debut of popular Bollywood actor Zayed Khan. It will also feature Vatsal Seth in a leading role. Kaun Banega Crorepati 9' being a finite series will also go off air by November.

As KBC 9' runs across three prime time slots, the channel hasn't decided on the time slots of the shows. It will be replaced by Ek Diwana Tha', Swastik Productions' Porus' and Aniruddh Pathak's Prithvi Vallabh'. Porus' and Prithvi Vallabh' are SET's two big-budget historical series.

Porus' revolves around King Porus, who fought against Alexander the Great in the battle of the Hydaspes and was the biggest obstacle to Alexander's ambition to conquer the Indian subcontinent. Prithvi Vallabhi' is a 40-episode finite series that deals with the life of the Rashtrakuta king..

Mano now can we say that 40 episodes is confirmed??
If it's a one hr biweekly show then it'll run for abt 4-5 months. But if it's weekday show then it'll end very soon just 2 months 😆

Sony Head and Sony's creative team members are quoted in this IV
but that 1hr and 40ep part was not said by them
still speculation can't be this precise
Also if one hour I don't think weekday is possible
If this 40 ep and 1hr news is true
then it has to be weekend show
lets see, we can't be sure with Sony untill we get Promo with time and date

btw Aditi like u said if it's weekend
it will go on for 4-5 months
and I am sure that entire shoot will be over atleast by 2-3 months of airing
We get two benefits out of it
we will have something to watch for 4-5 months
Ashu will have his break while the show is on air
which will make the wait for next show shorter😆😆
