The Adhyathama Ramayana I have heard and read have Swayamvar. But the fact that Ravan attended Swayamvar I came to know recently from my mom who said it is like that and he will fail to lift the dhanush.
Sita Swayamvar and Ram stringing the bow is always treated as the most beautiful part of Ramayan. Next one in line is the point where Sita gives her hair ornament to Hanuman.
In my community we are encouraged to read these parts as it is believed reading these parts in home brings auspicious tidings.

Raavan attended swayamvar as he wanted to prove that he is strongest and greatest devotee of lord shiva...but then two tales prevails here
According to one before he could go to pick the bow up...vishwa mitra stopped him giving reasons that he would definately win so let ram try
Second tale says sita prayed to all gods and so all devis made the bow more heavy so that raavan couldnt pick it up...

But raavan just forgot about sita as he was never interested in her but then suparankha(raavan's sister) reminded him of sita and ram ...raavan remembered them and then went to kidnap sita...his main aim being forcing ram to kill him as he was no longer the true devotee of shiva as he couldnt pick up the bow and then if he is killed by god he would go to heaven...

I swear.. I was confused too.. I have read parts of Krittibash Ramayan.. the Bengali one.. .and it seems that is fanfiction just like Kashidashi MB..😭 Dont know for sure though...
But I am taking everything as a grain of salt before seeing citations from the Valmiki Ramayan.. It has become my habit to propose to show/ask for citations even when I discuss epics with people face to face..😆

Isnt there any English translation for Valmiki Ramayan?

According to Valmiki, there is no swayamvar at all and no, Ravan didn't come for it. So many people misunderstand Valmiki Ramayan. The swayamvar is from Tulsidas' Ramcharitmanas, and Ravan doesn't come there either. Ravan coming for swayamvar, that too uninvited (not invited like in this show) is from South Indian versions of Ramayan.

In Valmiki, Ram strings and breaks the dhanush out of curiosity, not to participate in any swayamvar.

Ram stringing and breaking the bow is a HUGE chapter from Valmiki Ramayan. It would take forever for me to post the excerpts, so I will link you guys to valmikiramayan.net, and I strongly encourage you to read the English translation of the Mithila chapter. It is very interesting!

Valmiki's story is extremely simple. Ram and Lakshman go to Mithila with Vishvamitra to attend Janak's yagna. There, Vishvamitra and Janak recite various stories about Nimi vansh and the dhanush (the chapter itself is huge). Hearing about the dhanush, Ram is curious and asks if he might see it. Janak takes them into the chamber where the dhanush is kept, and there Ram asks if he can try using it, as he's a warrior. Janak gives him permission and Ram strings it successfully, breaking it by accident. Janak then informs them about his vow of marrying Sita off to the man who can string the dhanush, and sends a messenger to Ayodhya to inform them of the news.

Yes...Mahabharat has taught us many lessons.
I too ask for citations to be sure.
Now I really NEED to see citations bcoz the public know the folktales more than the actual epic.

Thanks a lot Janaki...😊
Is this Valmiki's Ramayan in English translation?
That is awesome...

Another question...
Is it true that Ram killing Vali from the back is not from Valmiki's Ramayan?

^^ I'm not sure about Vali Vadh, as I haven't read Kishkindha Kand from Valmiki Ramayan due to it being the most boring part of the epic IMO 😆, but I will refer to it and let you know, or you can just go to the website (www.valmikiramayan.net) and check yourself. They have all the kandas except for Uttara Kanda, as the website creator is still working on translating it. He has done an excellent job in translating the epic into English.
