Guyz,SPB ji is my favourite..hav grown up listening his songs..More in tamil, telugu than hindi. Here's a profile for SPB fans

SP Balasubramanyam

SP Balasubramanyam (born Sripathi Panditaradhyula Balasubramanyam, commonly known as SPB) is a prolific Indian singer. Balasubramanyam was born into an orthodox Saivite family on June 4, 1946 in Konetammapeta in the then Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. He developed an interest in music and learnt the notations, instruments such as harmonium and flute on his own while listening to his father. He has a wide range and a deep rich voice and prefers to know the complete meaning of the song he sings when he does not understand the language. His fans claim that he modifies his voice to suit the voice of the actor he sings for but SPB himself has not accepted this claim.

Balasubramanyam made his debut in movies as a singer in 1966 with Sri Sri Sri Maryada Ramanna which had music by his mentor Kodandapani. He has sung more than 30,000 songs in more than 5 different Indian languages including Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada. Thus he holds the Guinness record for the most number of recordings by any single male singer. (the female record is held by Lata Mangeshkar).

S.P. knows Hindi well enough, but has also sung in Bengali, Tulu and Oriya. He feels that vocal gimmickry cannot cover up incorrect accent, concedes that his accent and diction in Hindi are not perfect, but insists that accent is secondary to singing wherein the proper emotions are primarily needed as per the lyrics and situations. He welcomes modern technology as it enhances both speed and results.

He won the National award for best playback singing for movies such as Sankarabharanam, Rudra Veena, Ek Duje Ke Liye, Hum Apke Hai Kaun and Minnale. He has won a total of six national awards. In 2001, he was awarded the Padma Shri.

SPB, as he is shortly known, virtually monopolised playback singing for more than 15 years in the Telugu, Kannada and Tamil cinema. Winner of innumerable number of awards both at state and national levels. Hosts a popular TV show called Paadutha theeyaga on E-Tv, Paadalani Undi on MAA-TV and Ede Thumbi Haaduvenu on 'E-Tv Kannada.'

Other facets

The other angle of Balasubrahmanyam is not yet known to most of the people, that he is also a good business magnate, the ceo of some pharmacetutical factories, Chariman of Kodandapani audio labs, chennai. Apart from these, he is a good actor, dubbing artiste, producer, music director etc.

REVIEWS

NAUSHAD ALI
I am also a great fan of this great singer….I think such a talented singer and a complete singer, deserves much more in life. I wish I get many more opportunities to work with him.

Kamal Haasan - Movie Artiste
Honestly as an artiste myself, my first reaction towards someone like Balu (gaaru), is envy. But then envy cannot belie talent. Hence fellow artistes like me are compelled to applaud this artiste however reluctant we are. With such awesome power Balu unlike many artistes can afford humility…

K.V. Mahadevan, Music Director
A sizeable credit for the National Award given to me by the Government of India for the "BEST MUSIC DIRECTOR" for the film "SANKARABHARANAM" goes to Balu….Of course the rendition of the songs by him contributed tremendously to the success of the movie. It was, in my opinion, equal to, if not better than, the best efforts from a specialist in classical songs. Today he has truly established himself as one of the few singers of quality in all the South Indian languages, including Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi.
Though he is known to come late for the recording, he more than compensates for the delay by ensuring that all the songs are rendered to perfection in the first try itself. For all his popularity, he is very humble and very friendly with all members of the orchestra. He also provides a number of useful suggestions to improve the music for his songs…
In his humbleness, magnanimity, and love for music, he has no equal today. His golden voice is the one and only in the industry.

A. Nageswara Rao - Movie Artiste
It is not an exaggeration to say that the name of Shri SP Balasubrahmanyam has become a by-word in the families of music lovers. He has reached the pink of perfection and carved a niche in the hearts of millions of people. This is all by dint of his hard work and devotion.

I only recently learnt that he was not classically trained when he did Sankara Bharanam. Talk about talented. Illayaraja knew how to make full use of his talent (esp in 70's and 80's) I feel that some MDs in the 90's made him sing really DUMB songs, esp in Telugu (I am Telugu) (I guess the movies themselves were dumb) Even the best singer cannot be appreciated when they sing dumb songs (lousy music, and lyrics..well that's my opinion) ARR also uses him well. It seems Naushad Ali said that among the current singers only SPB can come close to the range of Lata Mangeshkar. Can't get a better compliment than that.

Ofcourse Balu is a great singer...nothing to second that opinion....

He has also done some fantastic dubbing work for Kamal hassan in some wonderful movies...like Anbe Sivam(Telugu version)just one to cite an example...

His songs in Sirivennela,Abhinandana can never be overwritten...Hats off sir....

He mentioned in one of his interviews quoting how humble Lataji is.When the Indian delegation got to meet the Royal family at London, Prince said glad to know that u have sung highest number of songs ever and she was quick to pull SPB ji to front and say its not me sir, it is this gentleman who sang maximum number of songs.

All great people are so coz of lot of virtues which are more abt being a good person first and then anything else...
