She looked down at her phone and replied with indifference, "Sure."
Kabir carefully placed his plate on the table and pulled the chair out, passing the goddess like woman a fleeting glance before seating himself in front of her.
He twirled the food in his fork and sighed for the hundredth time that evening. He wasn't hungry. And the woman seated just a few inches away from him wasn't helping either.
"Mumbai's weather...unpredictable isn't it?", he spoke quickly trying to break the silence, not knowing what to expect in response considering the indifferent attitude she had thrown at him not too long ago.
The woman looked up from her phone before she kept it back inside her purse. Her eyes still fixed on him, she pulled out a cigarette from a sleek metal box and placed it between her lips.
"Is this your idea of small talk?", she asked while she shuffled through the depths of her purse for a lighter.
Though a little taken aback by her blatant display of crudeness, Kabir couldn't help but smile. She was so beautiful.
He watched on as she lighted the cigarette, her cherry stained lips encircling the slender white object and for a moment, just a tiny moment, he wondered what it would be like to have his lips on her soft ones.
He cleared his throat, trying to blot out the image that had unknowingly crept into the corners of his mind. "My name's Kabir. Kabir Sharma. May I know your good name?"
"You are Tarini's little brother, aren't you?"
Little? How little did he look? Perhaps growing a little stubble would help. He made a mental note. "Yes. You know Di?"
"College classmates."
"Oh."
"Trisha and I were good friends during college. But we lost touch soon after college ended. We met at a bookstore a couple of weeks ago. She told me she was getting married and invited me to the wedding. I couldn't refuse."
Kabir nodded. He wasn't entirely concentrating on what she was saying, he confessed to himself. He caught himself gazing at her lips every now and then. Goodness. He needed to stop doing that.
He looked up from his plate, wanting to continue their conversation.
"ANANYA!"
They turned their heads in unison in the direction of the voice. So her name is Ananya.
He noticed Ananya shift irritably in her seat. The man came over and put his arm around her shoulders, completely ignoring Kabir's presence.
"I have been looking all over for you Ananya!"
"What do you want Manav?"
"Dinner at my place tomorrow?"
Ananya looked up at him and smiled.
"So my place it is?" Manav looked at her, trying to decipher her expression not knowing if it was a yes.
"I was thinking...what would be more painful? Walking barefoot on hot coal or going out with you?", she asked still smiling. "I think we both know the answer."
Kabir smiled inwardly at her saucy reply.
Manav looked on with a questioning gaze.
"I said no when you asked me in college and my answer remains the same even today. You were an asshole back then and you still are one. If you think your sugar coated nonsense can get me to sleep with you then let me ask you to think again. The only reason I haven't slapped you yet is because you are Trisha's cousin." Ananya pushed his hand away from her shoulders. "So don't touch me again."
Manav looked towards Kabir before nodding his head, the nerve on his forehead throbbing. "I'll remember this Ananya Kashyap. I'll remember this." With that said he stormed off into the crowd.
Ananya stuffed her belongings into her purse before she too disappeared into the crowd.

12th May, 2012 - 5:30 am - Delhi
Kabir checked his phone. 12th May. He had met her exactly a year ago.
"Sir, may I please ask you to switch off your phone? We are about to take off."
Kabir nodded at the air hostess. He switched off his phone after sending a quick message to Tarini and fastened his seat belt.
I'll be with you within a few hours Ananya. He closed his eyes as the aircraft took off to his destination.
