She didn't recognise him because he had a face transplant 😆
On a more serious note ... she didn't recognise him because of the mud on his face ... that was the reason for splashing him with mud in the first place ... to make him look like a street urchin and a beggar.

I am still 50/50 with that explanation. Could go either way but it just seemed odd for me. You can't really forget a face that easily either. Esp. if they leave you with such an impression and have the same school clothes.
