Chap 1B: Negotiations

"Do you think mom is serious?" Shan referred his father the question when he gave him a ride to the local subway station. Shan hated to drive especially in a city like NY where a car is considered a handicap---it would drive any sane man insane. Instead he preferred the sub or his faithful bicycle which he rode everyday to and fro from work; come rain, snow or shine.

Shashank guffawed. He was very loud for not so big a man. Shan, who was nearly 6ft tall, had apparently inherited the lanky genes from his Rajbir uncle.

"No son, she won't kill herself. But she'll certainly kill you if you don't bring her a bahu!"

That provoked a chuckle from Shan; "I guess that is one of the reasons I don't wish to tie the knot. Because no girl deserves to be a victim of mom's ministrations---no matter how well intentioned they are. I'd rather stay single."

He father voiced sagely, "You say so now. But soon you will change your mind."

"Why would I? I can see how 'Happy' you are married to mom!"

Shashank turned to face his son in all seriousness, "I am as happy as I can be. You may end up even happier."

His son's mouth twisted into a confused smile,"I don't get it."

His father continued patiently, "You are young and have everything going your way. Choice of education, job, respect, incredible success...but for how long? How long can you sustain this pace? Life comes with its checks and balances." His voice turned somber. "I was also like you once---young, dynamic, indestructible. But in a way I'm glad that papaji forced me to tie the knot. Though perhaps I'd have preferred a less forceful woman if I'd had the choice." He erupted into an awkward laugh.

"Anyway that's besides the point." He said looking sideways at his son whose fine features had assumed a dubious expression. "What I mean is that a time will come when you'll find an empty space inside that can only be filled with love. Mark my words."

And on that cryptic note Shashank pulled to a halt at the substation. Shan adjusted the ubiquitous backpack on his shoulder and said, "I'll think about it Dad," before nodding goodbye and walking away. He didn't have any intention to do any such thing. He'd said so just to appease his father's heart whom he was very fond of.

Yet that night, he tossed and turned restlessly in his solo bed, whence typically he'd have fallen fast asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow. His mother's threat along with his father's pearls of wisdom kept clamouring inside his skull.

He knew his mother wouldn't rest without seeing him wed. And by no means was he going to throw his entire future away by linking up with one of her choices. So what was a man to do when he found himself in such a bind?

Frustrated, he swung his feet down. A glance at the luminous numbers of the digital alarm clock told him that the new day had arrived. He got up, freshened up, pulled on a pair of worn out sweats he'd had since college and his dependent trainers and rode out on his bicycle towards central park.

Shan rented a 1 bedroom apartment on the posh Upper East Side, which he had secured at a bargain because the guy who owned it happened to be close friend. He'd just got hitched and had been forced to move to larger accommodations.

Shan loved the place, even though it was somewhat cramped. Because from here he could easily bike to work and to the park within a matter of half hour to 45 minutes at the most.

He pedalled furiously down 5th avenue and swung onto one of the numerous entrances that led into the park. There, after he had secured his two wheeler, he took off on foot. This was his daily routine. He had discovered that the crisp, clean air helped keep his brain robust and in top gear for the rest of the day.

It was late in October. Soon, very soon, a glittering white powder would fall down from the skies and cover everything in a blanket of snow. A pristine, perfectly flawless layer of white---one of the most beautiful scenes nature could offer to its patrons.

He jogged. His breath steaming out in front of his face. And he contemplated. He passed by a few other lone joggers like himself and nodded to a couple of nameless yet familiar faces whom he recognized from before. An elderly couple out on a gentle stroll---faces serene and blissful.

He chanced upon a couple voraciously necking on a bench. They paused when he ran by, then continued undeterred. He snickered and shook his head; Idiots! Wait till she springs the surprise!

All of a sudden he was reminded of an incident from a long time ago. It was prom night and the prom queen had dared him to a kiss and he had obliged quite willingly. In the girls' bathroom, in a tiny stall, his raging hormones had taken over, egged on by a few slugs of beer and one thing had led to another. Thank Heavens that someone had entered at the right moment, or else...

"PHEW!" Shan stopped and collapsed against the gnarled limb of an old oak tree in front of the lake. The memory still strong enough to knock the wind out of him. Cindy, the prom queen had been pregnant and the perpetrator had ditched her. Shan had then become the gullible rich fall guy.

"I'll never let that repeat again. Never!" He blurted aloud to no one in particular and gazed out at the spectacular image of the skyscrapers reflected in the calm waters. Two white swans were taking a lazy turn. Bloody couples everywhere!

His pager came alive and sprung him out of the spell. He was thankful for the distraction. It was the ED calling from Lenox Hill.

"Dr. Mehta..." Shan listened quietly to the doc's narration, then barked crisp instructions into the phone.

"Ready the OR. I'll be there in 40 tops!"

A young 15 yo kid had been playing with his father's loaded gun, when it went off and accidentally shot his friend, narrowly missing his vital organs but then lodging dangerously close to the spine.

Shan felt his adrenalin pumping as he jogged back. This was the reason why he loved his job so much. His skills could prevent someone from becoming paralyzed for life. He could visualize himself performing the delicate procedure and the most beautiful thing about it all was that his hands never shook.

He waited anxiously at the crossroads for the light to change. He wouldn't have time to shower.

Success!!!

Shan let out a huge sigh and relaxed back in his swivel chair at the Manhattan offices of Central Neurosurgical Associates. It had taken four long painstaking hours but the surgery had been successful. The bullet had been extracted. The blood evacuated and the spinal cord saved. The boy would be able to walk again!
He had grudgingly accepted all the praises that had been heaped on him for accomplishing one of the toughest procedures that a neurosurgeon could undertake. But the best moment was when the boy's father had come forward with tears in his eyes, taken Shan's hands in his and reverently kissed them. What more could anyone want?

But then he was jerked back to reality by his mother. She screamed into the phone, "Shan! Do you want me to kill myself? Then prescribe me some poison!"

Damn it! Why can't I be left alone for just a moment! He closed his eyes, counted to five and replied, "Okay. I will give marriage serious consideration."

"Wow really?" She asked excited. Shan could imagine her eyes gleaming. Her dream was about to come true. "Then shall I start discussions with the Sharmas for their daughter Renu? She is supposed to be a really good cook or what about the Roshans...their younger girl Sush is apparently very skilled in needlework."

"Ma...are you getting married or am I?"

"Beta, listen...I..." She wailed.

He retorted sternly, "I am willing to listen to you but only on one condition. I will choose my future wife entirely on my own!"

Am quite unhappy with the response so far. I feel that there aren't enough people here who care for this kind of story. So this will be my last update here unless I am persuaded otherwise.
Thanks
