King

Quick note - the 16000 or 16100 wives Krishna had were not the gopis. They were the concubines that Narakasura had kept in his harem for his own pleasure. After the killing of Narakasura, there was the question of what would befall them, since they had been used for his pleasure and weren't going to be accepted by normal men as wives, and therefore, Krishna bestowed on them the status of his wives.

This was those. Prior to that, Krishna had 8 main wives, Rukmini, Satyabhama, Jambavati and some others whose name I don't readily recall, but whom you can see here

So it's not like Krishna wanted so many wives. He just felt compelled to have them given those circumstances. I know about how and why he married Rukmini, Satyabhama and Jambavati, but don't know about the others in the above clip.

Narakasur was a demon king. He defeated many other kings and killed them. He took the wome of those kingdoms and brought them forcibly to his palace.
In a war, Krishna killed Narakasur and freed those women. Those princesses had nowhere to go to. So, Krishna married them.
(Some versions say that Satyabhama killed Narakasur and some say that Krishna killed Narakasur when requested by Satyabhama).

Krishna had more than 16,000 wives out of which 8 were chief. They are:-
Rukmini, Jambavati, Satyabhama, Kalindi, Mitravinda, Satya, Bhadra, Lakshmana

Rukmini - Rukmini was in love with Krishna and wanted to marry him. But her elder brother Rukmi was forcibly getting her married to Shishupal. Krishna abduvted her (of course, with her consent). A fierce fight ensued between Rukmi, Shishupal and many other warriors on one hand and Krishna on the other. Krishna defeated all of them, brought Rukmini to his palace and married her.

Jambvati - Satyabhama's father was king Satyajit. He was a devotee of Sun god. Pleased with his devotion, Sun god gave him a jewel called Syamantak. Because of the power of the jewel, Satyajit was always in best of health and his kingdom was very proserous. The jewel was really very beautiful and sparkling.
One day, Krishna borrowed the jewel from Satyajit because he (Krishna) wanted to give the jewel to king Ugrasen. But Satyajit refused. Krishna said nothing.
One day, Satyajit's younger brother Prasenjit wore the jewel and went hunting in a forest. Prasenjit and his horse were killed by a lion. The lion dragged Prasenjit's body to a cave. Jambvan saw the lion. There was a fight between Jambvan and the lion in which the lion was killed. Jambvan gave the jewel to his children as a toy to play with.
Meanwhile, Satyajit was worried when his brother did not come back. He told everybody that Krishna must have killed Prasenjit for the jewel.
Krishna heard of the allegation. He investigated the matter and reached the cave of Jambvan and saw the jewel. A very fierce fight took place between Krishna and Jambvan. The fight continued for 28 days. Finally Krishna won. Jambvan was amazed to find a human who could defeat him. He understood that Krishna was none other than Sri Ram. He was overwhelmed with emotion on seeing his Lord and worshipped him. Krishna explained why he wanted the jewel. Jambvan happily gave the jewel to Krishna and also his daughter Jambvati in marriage to Krishna.

Satyabhama - Krishna took the Syamantak jewel from Jambvan and gave to Satyajit and told him the whole story. Satyajit felt bad that he had made false allegation on Krishna. He apologized to Krishna and got his daughter Satyabhama married to Krishna. He also wanted to give the jewel to Krishna but Krishna said that Satyajit should keep the jewel.

Kalindi - One day, Krishna and Arjun were moving in a forest. There they saw a very beatiful lady at some distance. Arjun went to the lady and inquired about her. The lady introduced herself as Kalindi and said that she prayed everyday to get Krishna as her husband. Arjun went to Krishna and reported the matter to him. Krishna took Kalnidi in his chariot and went to Yudhisthir where he stayed for some days. Then he went to Dwarka and married Kalindi.

Mitravinda - There were two kings Vindya and Anuvindya. They treated Duryodhan as their master. They had a sister named Mitravinda. In her swyamvar, many kings and princes came. Krishna also came. Mitravinda wanted to marry Krishna but her brothers told her not to choose Krishna. Then Krishna took her in his chariot, fought the other kings present there, defeated all of them and took her away. Thus Krishna married Mitravinda.

Satya - There was a king named Naganjit. His daughter was Satya. Naganjit wanted his daughter to marry somebody very brave. He put a condition. There were seven very vicious and sharp-horned bullls. Whoever fought with all the bulls at one time and defeated them was allowed to marry Satya. Lord Krishna heard of this and went to Naganjit's kingdom. Naganjit was happy to see Krishna and he felt that Krishna should marry Satya. But it was not proper to break the condition. Krishna accepted the condition and easily defeated all the seven bulls. Then Satya married Krishna. When Satya and Krishna were going to Dwarka, then on the way, they were stopped by other kings who wanted to marry Satya. Krishna's army fought with those kings. Arjun was also present there. He fought on the side of Krishna. Those kings could not face Arjun's arrows and ran away.

Bhadra - Bhadra was a princess of Kaikeya kingdom. She wanted to marry Krishna. Her brothers requested Krishna to marry her and thus she got married to Krishna.

Lakshmana - In Lakshmana's swyamvar, Krishna defeated other suitors and married Lakshmana.

That Lakshmanaa? I read something different - Krishna/Jambavati's son Samba was the one who went to Hastinapur (during the Pandava exile?) and eloped with Lakshmanaa. Duryodhan was furious and with his warriors gave pursuit and captured Samba and imprisoned him. Since Krishna was away from Dwaraka at the time, Balarama was asked to intervene. He first went to Duryodhan and requested that Lakshmanaa be returned, but Duryodhan, in typical form, rebuffed him. Since Balarama had a short fuse (being Sesha-nag), he took a huge form (a la Hanuman) and with his plough, uprooted Hastinapur and put it in the middle of the sea. At this, the Kauravas panicked, and Dhritarashtra, Bhishma and all prevailed on Duryodhan to not only release Samba, but hand Lakshmanaa over as well. It happened, and that's how Lakshmanaa became Samba's wife.

When Arjun and Duryodhan visited Dwaraka asking for Krishna's support in the war, they used those relationships to claim support - Arjun being Krishna's brother-in-law, and Duryodhan being the father-in-law to Krishna's son.

If one of Krishna's 8 principle wives was named Lakshmanaa, it must have been a different one from Duryodhan's daughter.

wow King great topic! this topic really contains a wealth of knowledge!! That's why IF is loved by so many ppl! No doubts!!

Yes, Lord Shri Krishna had more than 16,000 wives. I have heard that when Lord Vishnu incarnated Himself as Lord Ram there were so many girls who wanted to marry Shri Ram and serve Him as He was a perfect man. But Shri Ram took a vow to have only one wife in His life, Sita, and no other. But seeing the pure hearts of those, He promised to have them as His wives/gopis when He comes on earth as Lord Krishna. And hence Lord Krishna had many wives. This is as per my knowledge. Correct me if I'm wrong.

By the way, Welcome to Ramayan forum King. Can I ask you a question just out of courtesy. Do you always speak or write in 3rd person? What language do you speak? And any particular reason to speak in 3rd person? Hope I'm not asking too many questions!!

Vajranabh,Lord Krishna's successor and great grandson,is believed to have built the present temple Dwarakanath, also called Trilok Sundar. Many Hindus fervently believe that the temple was erected in one night by a supernatural agency, under Vajranabh's direction. Legend has it that when dying,Lord Krishna asked his devotees to leave Swarnadwarika so that the sea could engulf it. Until this day,Lord Krishna's city lies buried under the sea. Excavations have revealed that the sea swallowed five settlements, the present-day Dwaraka being the sixth in line.

Shree Krishna's grandson and son of Pradhugmn, Prince Anirudh was married to daughter of King Banasur or Multan, Princess Usha. They had a son named Mrigketan. Yet another son of Banasur was Kou Bhand, who had a daughter named Rama. Thus, Usha was Rama's "bua". Once Rama had accompanied her bua Usha to Dwarika, Usha's sasural. Once arrived, Anirudh's Uncle, Sambh got attracted towards Rama and married her. They had a son named Ushneek or Ushaneer. Prince Kou Bhand became King after Banasur. But since he had no son, he called up Ushneek and make him the King of Sonitpur, the capital of Mistra. Many centuries later, one of the generations of King Ushneek, Devendra lost the kingdom to Nabi Mohammad and as a result his son, Prince Ugrasen was forced to convert to Islam. Prince Ugrasen was also known as Asvapati. Devendra's second son, Prince Gajpati came to Surat and established his own state. Gajpati's generations were known as "Chudasiya Yadavs". Devendra's third son, defeated Firozshah in Gazni and ruled thereafter. Devendra's fourth son ruled the states of Kacch and Sindh.

Don't forget Akhl either - I didn't know any of the histories of Krishna's other 5 wives aside from the first 3. As for family, I don't know much about my own family either 😆

Rupali, the king remembers vaguely the story he read in his childhood abt a bet b/w arjuna n hanuman regarding building a bridge. here is the full detail. hope it helps u.

Hanuman is Chiranjeevi - one who lives forever. Thus even as various eras passed by Hanuman was ever-present. He was also told that Lord Sriram would reappear as Lord Krishna at a future time. Thus Hanuman appears in the Mahabharata at two junctures - once to quell the pride of Bheema and the second time to see Lord Krishna.

Bheema was the brother of Hanuman in the sense that Bheema was also born as a result of a boon from Vayudeva. Once when the Pandava's were resting in the forest, a heavenly flower by name Sugandikapushpa floated through the air into the lap of Draupadi. Totally enchanted by its beauty and fragrance she asked Bheema to get some more flowers for her. Thus Bheema went in the direction in which the flower had flown. He found it in a lake belonging to Gandharvas (the court musicians of Lord Indra), after a fierce battle he was able to obtain the flowers. Thus triumphantly, Bheema headed back, proud of his strength. On his way back he found an aged monkey blocking his path, since it was the custom not to cross a living person, Bheema, his thoughts still swollen with pride, called out loud to the monkey to clear the path. The feeble monkey told him that it was too tired, it requested the powerful warrior to move it's tail aside. An arrogant Bheema could not budge the tail though he tried with all his might. Realizing his folly he apologized to the monkey. Seeing his arrogance quelled, the monkey returned to its original form; it was none other than Lord Hanuman who had come to subdue the pride of his brother.

Hanuman told Bheema, after the above-mentioned incident that he would appear on the flag of Arjuna's chariot. But I will relate the second story because it is here that Hanuman actually meets Lord Krishna.

In an argument between Hanuman and Arjuna, Arjuna claimed that he could reconstruct the bridge built by the Vanar army during Lord Sriram's war with Ravana using his archery skills. Hanuman laid the challenge that if Arjuna could build a bridge that could withstand his weight, let alone an army's, then he would be on the flag of Arjuna's chariot in the war. But should Arjuna fail it was decided that Arjuna would give up his life by entering a pyre. Arjuna built a bridge in a jiffy and when Hanuman stepped on it the whole bridge collapsed, Arjuna, immensely disappointed decided to end his life. At this moment Lord Krishna appeared and asked Arjuna to build the bridge again. After Arjuna rebuilt the bridge, Lord Krishna touched the bridge and asked Hanuman to walk over it. Despite his best efforts Hanuman could not break the bridge; at this instant Hanuman saw Lord Sriram in Krishna and was overcome with emotion. He promised to aid Arjuna in the war by being on the flag of Arjuna's chariot, thus stabilising and protecting it.

Hanumanji's flag signifies sense control and mind control that gives victory to the higher nature over the lower nature.

Arjuna's Chariot bursts into flames:

At the conclusion of the war (Shalya Parva), as soon as Lord Krishna and Lord Hanuman exit Arjuna's chariot, the chariot, along with the horses, instantly catches flames.
