Part 6
Zoya was really surprised when Asad silently listened to her side of the story, just the way she had asked, without any interruptions and without losing his temper. She wanted to pinch herself to check whether she was dreaming, since the day she had entered his house he had never ever given her the chance to explain herself, but here he was, listening to her like she had always wanted him to do. Zoya looked at him and tried to read his expressions, his emotions ranged from remorse to guilt to sadness and even wonder. His face was like an open book, which also surprised Zoya since she was under the conception that he could pull out the best poker face ever. They were sitting side by side on the edge, Asad slowly entwined his hands with Zoya's and they sat silently, not saying anything, not breaking the moment. Silence can be very awkward but not for them, they were comfortable just the way they were.
Asad was shocked by what Zoya had to say, he was also proud of the amazing, extra ordinary woman sitting beside him. Did such people even exist? He wondered. He was guilty for thinking she would deliberately endanger everyone's life. At that moment he realized she was probably the most selfless, kind loving person he has ever met after his ammi. He wondered how a person can be so selfless, so altruistic. She always kept others needs before her. She had kept herself way down on her priority list. He then remembered the countless times he had accused her of being selfish and not caring for people's emotions and regretted his words immediately, he wished he could take it all back. Not caring about her safety she helped his cousin, HIS! She was in no way related to the girl she helped, she had not even met her before yet she didn't think twice before practically saving her life. He saw Zoya looking at him, trying to gauge his reaction. He didn't know how to react, whether to yell at her for not thinking about herself or taking her in for a hug. He chose to simply hold her hand and let his eyes do the talking. They didn't need words; all they needed were emotions and understanding, a thing which he lacked for a very long time but not anymore. He felt Zoya relax and even he dropped his tough demeanour for the moment. He didn't want to break the moment but he also knew that it was very late at night and they would have a long day tomorrow.
"I think we should go to sleep." He said although reluctantly, he didn't want to sleep and this feeling of being with her. He knew himself too well to know that as soon as the morning will commence they'll be back to the square one. Even if he did embrace his feelings he knew that they were toxic together, he didn't even know how Zoya felt about him. The subtle hints like the way the cheeks reddened a sweet shade of red whenever they were close, her quickened breath and heartbeat, the way she would relax under his slightest of touch were not enough. He feared he would hurt Zoya, which let's admit it is all the time, he feared he would be like his father and he would push Zoya away from her but will not become his father.
Zoya smiled at him and replied, "I would but the problem still remains Mr Khan. How will we sleep? And I'm not sleeping with you. Pun unintended." This time she specified which made Asad laugh. Zoya stared at him, probably hearing him laugh for the first time ever since she came to his house. He looked so young when he smiled or laughed, not at all the 27-year-old business tycoon. Zoya's smile stretched further and she felt herself laughing with him.
"Well thanks for clearing that out, I'm glad there are no second thoughts in your mind." He wiped his forehead in a dramatic manner. The action was something that Zoya had never expected Asad to do. Well tonight would be a memorable night, the night where Mr Grumpy Ahmed Khan loosened up a bit and joked! Not that she needed anything more to make this trip to Mangalpur a memorable one but she was glad she wasn't just taking bad memories from this place, if there would be memories that would make her cry there would also be memories to make her laugh. She felt tears sting her eye, tears of joy. She was glad Asad came back to help her, she was glad that her faith in Asad was not broken by him; he did come back to her rescue. She smiled as she remembered the long sigh of relief she had taken when she saw him outside the door of Mariam's house waiting for her. He had not gone; he had just gone to arrange a vehicle for them to flee on. She was so relieved that if they weren't being chased like dogs she would've hugged him. Well if she couldn't do it then she would do it now, better late than never, right? Without any second thoughts she threw herself at him taking him by surprise. He was too shocked to respond and he wondered what had taken over her. Even Zoya was unsure of what made her do that. Due to her sudden movement Asad had fallen flat on the bed with Zoya on top of him, yet again. He counted the number of times they had been in this position; it felt like destiny was hell bent of bringing them closer at every step they took away from each other. He didn't mind it though, her warmth and scent was his comfort, and her arms were his haven. Likewise with Zoya Asad's arms always made her feel safe, they were her sanctuary, she felt home when she was this close to him. Asad moved his hands across her back in an excruciatingly slow motion. Zoya tightened her grip on him and so did Asad. With his one hand around her waist he moved the other hand to cradle her head, pushing her head in the crook of his neck. Zoya inhaled deeply and breathed in his musky scent, Asad did the same with her hair. She had a flowery smell, she smelled of lavender and her hair smelled of jasmine, she was like a bouquet of flowers, his bouquet of flowers.
"Thank you Mr Khan!" her lips brushed against his neck making him gasp.
"For what?" he whispered. She lifted her head and looked straight in his eyes.
"For being there with me, for not abandoning me like everyone usually does."
He noticed her eyes become teary as she said it and she tried very hard to control her tears. He brought both his hands to cup her face, with his thumb he flicked off the traitor tear which had stubbornly rolled off her cheek.
"Do you really think I would be able to live if anything had happened to you?" he said truthfully. Zoya was shocked and this time she couldn't hold her tears back, she let them flow and she again buried her head in the crook of his neck and cried. Asad caressed back and buried his hand in her hair. He let her cry, she was a human after all and she needed to let it all out.
