Part 2-A She shifted on the bed, taking their entwined hands along as she rolled to the other side. Asad lifted his head from the sheets and realized he had been staring at her all long.
Zoya tugged at his hand in her sleep and mumbled some incoherent words. He leaned over her gently, carefully balancing himself on one foot and strained his ears to hear what she'd been mumbling.
His eyes popped out with surprise when he heard her referring to him. He grinned and recollected his words to her, not too long ago..
'Kyun mere khwabon pe aapke saaye hain?'
He plopped himself on an elbow and leaned forward, "Not bad, Miss Farooqui.. Aapki bhi yahi haalat hai! Din mein toh aap meri shakl bhi nahi dekhti.. Lekin sapnon mein mujhse baatein karti hain?"
He saw Zoya's lips twitch into a wicked smile and his anger and hurt melted away..
He rolled his eyes and tried to listen carefully, "Jahapanah, tussi great ho.. Aakhir aapne Miss Poison Ivy ko ghar se bahar kar hi diya.."
Asad looked on with a raised brow when he heard her mention Tanveer.. Poison Ivy?! Why, was the question she answered in the very next minute..
"You know, mujhe bilkul accha nahi lagta tha, jab aap usse chipak chipak kar baatein karte the.. Uske saath hasi mazaak kiya karte the.. Uske traditional values ki taareef kiya karte the.."
His forehead furrowed immediately as he tried to absorb what she meant by that.. His fingers stroked the back of her palm involuntarily while he looked on and waited for her to talk..
And she did.. Only, he saw her clench her eyes tight and her grip on his fingers tightened,
"It hurts when you compliment her.. When you look at her and ignore me as if don't exist around you.. It hurts right from the day, you sprinted past me towards her.. Kyun? Aisa kyun hota hai, Mr. Khan?"
Asad let out a sharp sigh and shook his head; He'd been such a fool.. He looked at her with love and guilt dripping down his eyes and let them do the talking.. I'm so sorry Zoya, to have not realised it earlier.. It would've saved us both so much pain..
Zoya rolled on her back and Asad saw moisture gather around her shut eyes.. He swallowed the gasp that threatened to escape his lips and bit his lips together when he saw her lips move..
"I wanted to come to you and yank you away from her. I wanted to tell you to pick me over her.. To walk up to me..To laugh with me.. To share your pain with me.. Lekin, main aisa nahi kar paayi.."
Asad was so sure he would cry any minute now.. Had he really made her feel so unwanted? The woman he had ever loved?!
Mentally reprimanding himself for having done that, he squeezed her fingers reassuringly as if apologizing for every moment he had hurt her, either knowingly or unknowingly..
He heard her sob and his eyes darted off to her face.. She was crying in her sleep?!
She sniffed and he saw tears trickling down her pale cheeks.. And those sliced right through him, as always..
"Maine bohot himmat ki, Mr. Khan ki aapki taraf ek step loon.. But you pushed me away even before I could walk that one step.. Aapne mujhe baar baar yeh ehsaas dilaya, ki main kaun hoon.. Kaisi hoon.. Aur main aapke liye, aapki family ke liye bilkul bhi fit nahi hoon.."
His chest constricted with an array of emotions fleeting through him.. And the urge to hurt himself physically just grew stronger with each passing second..
There's no use, feeling guilty now.. You should've never uttered those words..
And just when he had freed one palm from her grip, he heard her chuckle and that scared him..
He gasped and looked on with bated breath when she chuckled and sobbed, both at once,
"And so.. Guess what? I'm going.. Back to New York.. Aapki life se bohot door.. Isn't that what you always wanted?"
He saw her raise her other palm high above her head, "Bohhott door.."
Asad's teeth clenched tight until they clattered at the mere thought of her leaving him.. He leaned forward and to his horror, he failed to realise that he'd been balanced on one foot.. The next second he lay half on top of Zoya..
However, thanks to his sharp reflexes, his palm pushed against the mattress to prevent Zoya from being crushed under his weight.
Zoya's eyes flew open when a heavy mass landed on top of her and she looked up startled, only to find a pair of chocolate brown eyes gazing into hers.
Her heart skipped a beat and she gulped, probably trying to convince herself that it was just a figment of her imagination. He wasn't real..
However, his warm breath on her earlobes and the husky voice that followed it, undid the moment,
"Zoya.."
She jerked back a bit and wriggled on the bed as the sudden realization that Asad lay on top of her struck her.. He realised her discomfort and tried to get off the bed, only to have their entwined fingers hold him back..
Zoya's eyes immediately drifted to their clasped fingers lying on the pillow beside her. Her eyes lingered there for a moment before she looked away and freed her hand..
Asad took the hint and stood on his feet a few metres away from the bed, giving her ample space.
She looked at his back, gulped and pinched her forehead slightly, Why were things getting complicated even more?
Finally, having composed herself she stood behind him with her arms crossed across her chest firmly before speaking,
"What were you doing here, Mr. Khan?"
Asad turned on his heel and held her gaze momentarily before he fumbled for words,
"Woh.. main.."
Zoya looked away and avoided meeting his eyes, "Aap aise mujhe sotey hue dekh rahe the? You freaked me out!"
Asad realised that it must have been indeed scary and embarrassing for her when she'd woken up with him on top. He felt the need to clarify himself,
"Main aapse baat karne aaya tha.. Lekin aap tab tak so chuki thi.."
Zoya turned to her side and stared at the half-open door,
"Toh aapko subah tak wait karna chahiye tha.. Yeh aise choron ki tarah kissi ladki ke room mein ghuskar aap?"
His brows knitted and then relaxed when he realised she was probably misunderstanding him.. But then he decided against offering her an explanation for it..
He had wasted a lot of time bickering with her, when they could've said and heard something far more peaceful and interesting. And besides he had to apologise to her, confess to her and make up for every tear he had given her in the past.
Zoya turned to look at him, when he hadn't retaliated to her earlier remarks. Needless to say, she was surprised with his silent treatment.. She saw him walk a few steps back and pick up something from the floor.
Asad walked back to his previous position and tried unfolding the crumpled ball of paper. To his annoyance, it tore and he threw it away.
Zoya saw it hit the window panes and looked up, "What?"
He crossed his arms across his chest and looked straight into her eyes,
"Aapki ticket thi.. Jisse main phaad chuka hoon.."
Her doe-shaped eyes widened and she glanced at her now discarded tickets,
"Mr. Khan.. Woh.. Meri.."
She shot him a hard stare and met his firm gaze, "Kya main jaan sakti hoon kyun?"
Every cell in his brain screamed aloud, Because I love you..
Yet he knew that wasn't a reason enough to make up for his follies in the past. He had to make her feel special. He had to make her feel whole.. And only then would he confess his true feelings to her. A sense of calmness took over him and he walked to the window.
Zoya saw his facial features soften and that made her frown vanish as well.
What if he? No.. Get a grip, Zo.. He's not asking you to wait.. I mean.. Just for the time-being.. Maybe he's feeling guilty about all of it, now..
Just speak to him and get out of this.. Without hurting yourself any further..
She walked up to him and stood with her back resting against the window panes, glancing at him sideways.
Asad realised she was awaiting his answer and decided to be frank, for once. He looked at the dimmed lights in the garden,
"Stay back, Miss Farooqui.."
To say that Zoya was baffled would be an understatement. But the very next second, she managed to compose herself. She couldn't let his on and off switch play havoc with her already frenzied senses anymore.
She inhaled sharply, "Mr. Khan?"
He closed his eyes momentarily before opening them and looking at her, "Don't go, Zoya."
She lifted her eyes and looked away, lest she started tearing up. Asad turned around, resting his back on the window frame so that he now stood, exactly beside her. He glanced at her and realised she was going through an emotional upheaval.
Had it been any other day, Asad would have left her alone to deal with it, but tonight was different.
He had to set things right and the only way was to undo his previous mistakes before they could make a fresh beginning.
Zoya sighed and decided to free him of his guilt before she walked out of their lives.
Because no matter how much he had hurt her, she could never overlook the fact that it was only him, who had awakened sensations of the most beautiful feeling, she had ever felt.
Yes, she was in love with Mr. Akdu Ahmed Khan..
She shrugged the thought away,"Mr. Khan, you don't have to do this.."
Asad knew she was fighting her own emotions but today he wanted her to let it all out and put his point across convincingly at the same time,
"I know.. But I want to.."
Zoya's head snapped up at that almost whisper like mumbling voice. She tilted her head and looked at him, slightly embarrassed when she felt his hypnotic eyes waiting for hers to join his.
If silence could speak, their eyes were ready to do the talking and both knew it.. Asad saw her fight back her tears and broke the eyelock.
Zoya looked away and sniffed, "It's too late.."
She inhaled sharply, "My visa expires in 4 days from now. I have to head back to New York."
Asad felt a sudden poke in his ribs, How had he forgotten that bit?
He mentally made a note to deal with it, once this was over.
He shifted a bit closer and tilted his head to get a clearer view of her,
"Kya mere kuch kehne se aap ruk jayengi?"
So? Like it? Hate it? Love it?
