When you are watching a reality show, see a contestant from your country, region, religion on the show, the contestant may/maynot be the best out there
Why do people gravitate towards that contestant? Even without knowing if that contestant is the best or the worst people just want to vote for them
Indian Idol, Fame Gurukul, SRGMP, American Idol
American Idol has two Indian kids on the show, we know Indians/Asians will vote crazy for those two, same with Big Brother, People will vote for Shilpa whether or not she is the best, just b'cos she is Indian
Not entirely true. Canadian Idol had an Indian, Devika Mathur, among the top 20, but even though the judges brought her back in a wildcard round, she didn't make the cut because she was simply not as good as the rest.
Though it could be argued that not a lot of Indians watch CI, I believe that in the end, the minority quotient does not always help contestants win reality shows.
Eventually, if the contestant does not improve, even his/her supporters will stop voting. E.g. Jasmine Trias from American Idol who got tremendous support from Hawaii and Asians throughout the US. She never improved, finally ousting one of the season's best contestants, rousing the ire of many fans. Then, she was finally eliminated.
why do you think minorities do this?
Its not just minorities, but anyone who is remotely associated to the contestant's city or region will do the same thing.
It is very common for people to take pride in the accomplishments of others who are of the same race, religion or region.
Do we have a right to cry racism after this?
If we vote based on race, then definitely not. But, if we vote based on merit, then we have every right to cry racism. 😛
