No cheers at the box office

Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, October 18, 2011]

Five movies released over the weekend gone by and except for 'Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge', none of the other films either garnered all-around favourable reviews or audience foot falls. As predicted last week, 'Jo Dooba So Paar - It's Love in Bihar!' and 'Mod' turned out to be non-starters. On the other hand neither 'My Friend Pinto' nor 'Aazaan' could garner the kind of numbers that could have landed them into the safety zone.

Let's talk about 'Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge' first. The film was just optimally promoted and unlike Y-Films last offering 'Luv Ka The End', the film wasn't really everywhere. In fact till the day of the film's release, not many even knew the name of the starcast. Expectedly the film had minimal footfalls which pretty much threatened to spell doom for it. However turnaround did start happening as the day progressed with every passing show coming up with better collections than the one gone by. As the first weekend came to a close, this non-starcast affair that had seen a decent release for itself managed to net over 2 crores.

The film is still walking a tight rope as the second weekend would be crucial to ultimately decide if it would be able to do well theatrically. However on home video and satellite, the film has good chances to find popularity over a period of time.

Now this isn't something that 'My Friend Pinto' can enjoy as the film not just lost out on the box office race, it also couldn't gather much critical acclaim. Word of mouth from limited audience which saw the film wasn't too favourable either which means this solo starrer of Prateik hasn't quite proven to be beneficial for him. With just 1 crore coming over the first weekend, the film doesn't stand much chance at the box office.

The most heavily promoted of them all, 'Aazaan', also had similar collections coming in with majority of moolah from single screens where it actually saw some good foot falls at some parts of the country. Though yet again reviews were mixed, the fact that was acknowledged by one and all was some slick action and grandeur that the film boasted of. However at the box office this film too would have to wait for the second weekend since it may just manage to hang on due to lack of any competition at the single screens.

As for 'Mod' and 'Jo Dooba So Paar - It's Love in Bihar!', they don't even stand that minimal chance as they have been entirely rejected by the audience. 'Mod' has only itself to be blamed as it was not promoted at all while 'Jo Dooba So Paar - It's Love in Bihar!' just came out of nowhere and hence didn't even see good shows coming it's way. The fact that it was a barely passable affair only proved to be the final nail in the coffin.
