Why a 'NO' to father's role???

Sunday, June 19, 2011 | 4:07:07 PM IST (+05:30 GMT) Why a 'NO' to father's role???

On the occasion of FATHER'S DAY Producers of television industry speak up their views on actors saying NO to father's role...

It's Father's Day today, the day to celebrate and applaud fatherhood! It's the day to remember all those simple teachings, habits and advises one would have got from their father all thro' their upbringing.

It's usually a Dream Come True for a father when he holds his tiny tot in hand and thanks God for this small bundle of happiness. However, this is not the same feeling for actors who are provided this golden opportunity of becoming fathers on the small screen.

On this auspicious day Telly Buzz thought of sharing with you something common but certainly a deciding factor in television that usually puts the Producers and the channel in a big dilemma.

There have been lot many instances on television when the makers have been forced to make lot many compromises both with the script as well as the realistic touch in order to portray the leads as fathers.

This trend has always been there, whether it be the popular shows like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, or a Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii or Kumkum Ek Pyara Sa Bandhan. This trend follows in even today, and has caused problems to the extent of shows being forced to close down just because the lead actors refuse to go in for a leap. Take the recent cases of Sapna Babul Ka Bidaai wherein Kinshuk Mahajan and Sara Khan reportedly refused to grow old. Or Bhagyavidhaata wherein the lead actor had to be bumped off just because he was not in for a leap. And there's also the drastic case of Rishton Se Badi Pratha ending for the same reason. Or take the recent rumour of Sushant Singh Rajput being unhappy over the proposed leap in Pavitra Rishta!

While this is from the actors' point of view, spare a thought to the problems of the Producers who make these larger than life characters only to struggle after a point of time..

TellyBuzz managed to speak to certain popular Producers to know what they feel about this growing problem in the industry.

Rajan Shahi, Producer of hit shows Sapna Babul Ka Bidaai, Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai speaks, "As a Producer I always respect an actor's decision if he wants to play the role of a father or not. But at the same time, personally I feel that if the person is a good, strong and confident actor, his star image will not get affected if he takes up the role of a father. There are certain actors in the industry who survive with the star image alone. There were times when 23 year old actors used to play father and grandfather to a 19 year old. I feel that if the actor has the potential and if he is convincing enough to fit in the role, then there is no harm in playing it".

Jamnadas Majethia who has given lot many successful shows says, "When a show takes a leap after several episodes, the actors sometimes feel trapped inside the show. My show Behenien would have faced the problem if I had not told Sudeep Sahir about his role very much in advance.. I had already mentioned to him that he will eventually turn a father in the show. He said it would be fine with him if he was a father to a kid who is around five to six years of age and I assured him as well that it will be like that. I would say that Indian television is funny and the audience also is strange as they accept what is presented to them and in a way it is good for us".

Pearl Grey, the maker of one of the popular on Star Plus, Pratigya faced an unfortunate loss recently when her show, Rishton Se Badi Pratha on Colors went off air after the actors said no to take a gen leap, "Basically life in television life is short. When you are offered the first show, you are destined to take it as you are not in a position to choose. But once the show is a success and their characters become popular, they do have a choice to think about the next shows that come to them".

"We do understand that in television, the career starts at the age of eighteen and twenty and actors are doing roles of a married couple which they are not in real life. So it is obvious for them to have a reluctance in taking up the parental role. But at the same time they should understand that they will not be type casted if they do that", she continues.

"When we decided to do Pratha, the leap was already in the script and we had made it clear to the actors. But when the show was well accepted, the channel wanted it to drag it a little bit. And when the show was entering its real story, the actors showed their reluctance. It is not a problem when one actor decides to quit, but when many of them join, there is no meaning in continuing the show. And there is no point of relaunching the show with new cast. So, all thanks to the actors for making the show see its last", avers Pearl.

Siddharth Malhotra who has rather taken the safe route so far by working on youth oriented shows like the very popular show on Star One, Dill Mill Gayye says, "Touchwood, I have never had a problem with the actors in my show. Actually I never did shows that needed leap. We have seen in television where young actors are made father and I do not think it is their fault when they do not agree to play such a role".

Yash Patnaik another of those Producers who has never faced a problem with the actors states, "There are good actors who make the characters and there are certain actors who create an image. I feel that actors should be responsible enough to understand that a lot is spent on a show when it is made. Also I believe that if any problem arises, it could be sorted out with proper discussion and talk".

Well, when we talked to the Producers, Rajan Shahi, J.D.Majethia, Siddharth Malhotra and Yash Patnaik, we understood that they make great fathers too as they spend valuable time with their kids. Siddharth Malhotra and Yash Patnaik in fact wish to make a children show for Disney Channel, and we do hope that their dream will come true one day.

At the end of it, all we can say is that actors have their own choice and wish to choose their roles, but what they should realize is that, once the show is already set, they are bound to take the show further in one way or the other. If they believe in themselves and if they have the confidence that they make a good actor regardless of being fathers on the show, they would be termed as successful on television!!

Before we end, we in TellyBuzz would like to wish all the Proud Fathers on this Special Day...

I had prepared myself not to be a part of this forum until Apu is back with a show of his own but I just could not resist myself from posting this interesting article, one actor refused to play father (some where I thank him as then I would have never seen Apu play a father IN Bidaai ) and the actor who agreed to play really did a good job, I can't think of a better screen father today then Anmol, Tammy ke papa👏. Hats off to actor Apurva Agnihotri for essaying Tammy's papa and I hope he is back soon. Some where I like it better than Anmol as we heard him being addressed Tammy ke papa frequently 😳

Rekha rajan ji was sensible in taking apu for the role of anmol and Tammy Kay papa
So all I can say that post leap worked well due to him and I a proud that he took up the challenge gave success to post leap

He has amazing chemistry his punchlines with kids were awesome

I know many actors who are ready to do such roles even in the young actors infact the audience appreciate it and many who are scared to take a risk

Glad apurva did it not only for himself but for some fans who were moved by his performance and got many more appreciation

The chocolate boy image will not sustain long in television industry with loads of shows now catering to family oriented shows so if an actor can't do for the growth of the show or for any reasons they will have to leave and the show will either take risks like what bidaaii did and do wonders or it may not
And if it does do wonders with the risk and doing roles of fathers good script and actors with good caliber need to be castes and which will move the audience with the performance

I think after the success of bidaii even I see in yrkkh where shaurya is a father for an infant which is almost 8 months old and naithik and akshara may have a kid soon
These are young actors and doing the role pretty well

If this show takes a leap then let's see if they sustain
Pavitra rishtha did and sushant (manav) has his own kid abt 3 years or 2 years and he is fathering his bro's son who is 7 years

This is a biggest example of young actors who can do father roles

Very well said Mr. Rajan Shahi

The actor who can be versitile in playing a role given on his plate to the best of his ability and even the role of a father is commedable..Indeed You made the right choice taking Apurva Agnihotri for your show Bidaaii post leap and hope to see him in a new season of Bidaaii if its in the making any time. His role as a father of a little girl moved the audience and the risk you took with the storyline proved worthy !!Kudos to such actors and doing a role to a certain caliber

I am sure with the way dramas are happening now a days and audiece are seeing many kids in the show this will start happening and young actors who have the caliber to do it will do , and a few versatile actors will also start doing it and be appreciated

But at the same time, personally I feel that if the person is a good, strong and confident actor, his star image will not get affected if he takes up the role of a father.

So I feel that Apurva was selected since he is a pretty confident actor ... he has the caliber to take up any role

Infact I think he was offered the role of Rohan also in CB2 but he did'nt take it up so he did the role of a father in bidaaii post leap and then he was also offered the role of Rohan in CB2

So the variation of such roles if he had taken Cb2 wud be different and on par..

But maybe the script did'nt do much to his liking so did'nt eventure into it

I hope he comes back again as Anmol since that role is quite a refined role,.His interaction with the kids were so daam sweet, Many actors who are dad's in real life also do not wish to do that role , But I am glad that Apurva took it up and Bidaaii was a sucess post leap.,..

So for actors to take up fathers role in one serial and later offered another role should also be commendable since the audience know the caliber and the perfectionism of the actor !!

The stream of actors will defiantly face such challenges one day and should be able to show that level of confidence to accept it and not walk out ..
I think there will be a range of such actors in the near future if script and audience demand that

aww rajan said the ultimate thing here...one has too have guts and talent to do such roles..its easy to act mushy or eye locks with smirky face expressions...but it is another thing to make a child feel comfortable and bring twinkle to his or her eye with Ur convincing talent as an artist.
apu had perfect blend..infact no one else could pull such role more beautifully, specially the initial hero...one needs charm and charisma timeless charm..
thank you dear rekha for awesome and wonderful article..sachi so true..

Sammy the leap happening and Apurva taking the role of Anmol was all a good indication that risks have to be taken and they are proved to be successful...

I will also give credit to the screenplay written for the character which the audience loved and they believed that it clcked well..

We don't know how long it will take for a season two to come and when and with whom , but definitely the post leap in Bidaaii proved excellent with focus to characters centric role and the relationship shown between a father and daughter.

The theme Babul ka sapna is a legacy which will be carried and it did start with sharma ji and now its going to Anmol... So if season two is about Tammana and Khushi sister bonding and all the pros and corns then Anmol's character will have to exist.. and No one can play that character better than Apurva..

So whatever risk Rajan ji took and he asked Apurva to make the best of the character of Anmol it was worth while

As viewers till date we are at a disadvantage since the shortening of the postleap as there was still loads with such beautiful relastionships my hope is with an ewseason as a continuation lets see if it happens...
