Part 14

A new morning, a new day…..The case brought a reason for them to get out of the bed much earlier than the past 2-3 days but for Daya, it wasn’t an issue.

The memory of last night still linger behind his closed eyes that made him start his day with a wide smile. Just the thought of being so close to Shreya, to be able to hold her, to feel the peace that her presence and nearness provides him, was such an alien but heart-warming. Never in his life, he felt so alive just by someone’s touch.

With a jump in his step, he got up to get ready for the day. After taking a bath, wearing his dark brown shirt with black pants, he combed his hair and got out of his room. It was just 7:15.

His stepped stop right in front of the other door, that holds his happiness behind it. He raised up his hand to knock and at least get a glimpse of them before getting busy but he also knew it was her vacation too. She deserves to indulge herself with a late morning and have a relaxing day with Mihika.

“Good Morning” Slightly caressing the door, he gave a soft smile before leaving to meet the team.

Unknown to him, right that moment, Shreya’s eyes were opening inside to welcome the day with open arms and a wide smile. The first thought of her day was HIM, like it has been happening a lot in the recent days.

Picking up her phone from the side table, she quickly moved her thumb to open her chat screen with Daya before sending him a “Good Morning!!!” message. Tracing his name on the screen, she took a deep sigh and turned around to look at her daughter whose eyes were moving behind her eyelids, indicating that she was about to awake.

Leaving her mobile somewhere on the bed, she moved her fingers to gently push the hairs away from her small face before pulling her close and leaving an affectionate kiss on her forehead.

“My lucky charm,” She whispered, nuzzling her hairs, taking a deep sigh.

She had missed a lot with Mihika. Her baby smell, dressing her up in cute small clothings, the feedings, waking up every two hours to feed and change the infant, giving her the name and doing pooja for her, the teething period, watching her take her first solid food to first step. Even the right to name her was snatched away from her.

Mahira.

That was the name she had chosen for her daughter. A name she had thought alot about, called out loud in the empty room of her apartment while caressing her still pregnant tummy, wished of before she went into labour.

For the first painful year, all she received by Barbusa was the pictures of her daughter. She had kept on referring to her as Mahira and also told CID about her with the same name until one day, she received a video in which Barbosa men referred to her as Mihika.

Though she felt angry that her child was named by someone who kidnapped her, that the rights which should have been only hers were also snatched along with the child….. Nothing matters more than the safety of the said child. How she wished to be a part of her each moment.

A wishful sigh escaped her mouth.

Her little angel was deprived of her mother’s love till now.

Caressing her features with her nimble fingers, making sure to not wake Mihika up, Shreya kept gazing at her with the adoring gaze of a mother before kissing the forehead.

She let her warmth engulf her daughter and enjoyed the nearness for some time before she too got out of bed.

Today, she needs to make a plan for Daya. For the past few weeks, he had made her feel nothing else than cherished, wanted and praised. After yesterday’s incident, Shreya wanted to do something to assure him of her involvement too. Somewhere, under the curtain of her own insecurities, she knew she had awakened his fears of being left behind too.

But after talking with Tarika the previous day, she realised that in a healthy relationship, you need to step out of your comfort zone to experience things with the one person you truly want to have all those experiences of life with.

For her, Daya was that person. And so, here she is planning something.

—--------------------

Two Days Later:

The case was progressing like all others, every new clue was pointing to a new suspect ... .As the hours were passing by, the remnants marks of the killer were disappearing making the team more frustrated. Just last night, a girl was electrocuted from a mic…..another girl was killed by a drink….Purvi barely escaped from an acid splash. The knowledge that the victim was blackmailing others. The anxiety was getting high. Lateesha was acting suspiciously. And so with each passing moment, a new strategy was created by the team.

And then, the killer was caught. The psycho bar tender.

It took them two days but it was worth all the hassle. The team took a sigh of relief. Another killer was off the grounds under their comand.

The vacation was extended for a day more to relax and so Tarika and Shreya grabbed the chance.

“Meet me at the rooftop at 8PM. Don’t be late” The message chimed on Abhijeet's cellphone.

It was already 6:30.

Abhijeet’s cheeks took a tint. He and Tarika had shared a moment of closeness, of shared feelings like old times but it was ruined by his finding of the small camera. Though for the case, it was essential, but for his love life, it proved to be a hassle. His and Tarika’s emotional discussion was put on halt but it seems like he was getting another chance to rectify.

Daya noticed the small smile at the corner of his friend’s lips and scratched his own jaw to stop himself from smiling widely. He was truly delighted to see his friend once again falling into the depth of love even if with silly smiles. Instead of teasing, he made an excuse to leave.

“Accha yaar, main bohut thak gaya hoon….Case k chakar main raat ko sahi se so bhi nahi saka.” He stretched his arms to show his tiredness.

“Case k chakar main yaan…..kissi k khayalon main” Abhijeet was not one to leave a chance to tease. His lips turned into a smirk that left Daya with a chuckle.

“Kia Abhijeet tum…..Kuch bhi haan.” He tried to let the discussion go. But yes, thinking about Shreya and their future and Mihika was turning out to be a bigger part of his night time routine.

He had missed her. God. He had missed her presence near him. Her closeness.

In the last two days, they had shared just meals together and although, wishing each other Good Morning and Good Night was becoming a ritual along with sharing other tit bits of their daily life, he had missed her nearness. The feeling of just touching her even if it's just holding her hand. The tingles he feels by standing close to her. The sweet scent of her shampoo and cologne whenever he takes breath in the same vicinity as her.

For the first time he was realising what is called ‘Feeling Sick’ in Love.

Running fingers through his messed up hair, he moved towards the room, hoping for a shower followed by spending some time with Mihika and Shreya but ACP sir called him to his room. The whole CID team was present as ACP sir went through some fine points of the case with each of them. The long discussion was recorded on the phone to be later used in the filing process of this case so when the case will be represented in court, there will be no misplacement of events and everything will be in order.

Tarika and Abhijeet shared some deep looks while sitting across eachother.

Pankaj was yawning as Purvi elbowed his tummy in order to make him active.

Between the six of them, the vocal data of the case was recorded before they were allowed to leave.

Tarika left first on her high heels after giving a meaningful look to Abhijeet. Everyone noticed the meaningful glance which put Abhijeet under great scrutiny. Daya raised his brow in askance while Pankaj couldn’t hold his mouth and asked with a jolly smile.

“Abhijeet Sir, ye apke or Tarika g k beech kia isharay baazi chal rahi hai….bataiye bataiye…..?”

Abhijeet scratched his brow, feeling himself in a deep hole. Pankaj and Daya were waiting for an answer.

Purvi, although enjoying this fun interrogation, decided to rescue the poor senior. Finally, he was getting a chance to right his wrongs.

“Arre…..Mihika, Kahan ja rahi ho?” Purvi called out, looking at a random kid who was running out from the resort. Everyone turned to look at the kid, feeling protective but no one could see the child properly. All they saw was just a glance

“Kia tumne Mihika ko bahir jatay howay dekha Purvi?” Daya inquired but his steps were already moving towards the exit. Pankaj followed behind him.

“Aisa hi laga, Sir” She replied innocently.

Abhijeet was also about to move, himself afraid for the kid, when Purvi held Abhijeet’s elbow and pulled him behind, flapping her hand and mouthing ‘Chaliye, jaiyee’ ushering him to leave quietly.

Abhijeet now understood Purvi’s plan and left for his room to freshen up after saying Thank you repeatedly.

Purvi gave a wide smile and took a deep breath of satisfaction.

“Abh bus Abhijeet Sir or Tarika k beech bhi sab theek ho jaye…..CID ki rounaq phir se bhar jaye” She prayed.

Her phone buzzed and she picked up the call smiling.

“Haan Shreya, kaho…..”

And after raising a storm in the minds of Daya and Pankaj, she calmly left for her room, leaving them to look out for an un-missed child.

—--------------------------

Removing the drop of sweat from his forehead, Daya moved through the corridor towards his room. His heart was still beating at an alarming rate. Just the thought that something happened to Mihika seemed to have left him breathless. But after spending half an hour in a mindless search, Shreya called and assured him that Mihika was alright and with her which quietened down his worry.

After informing Pankaj who was also looking out for Mihika, Daya was now moving towards his room, hoping to have a warm relaxing bath. God knows, he needed to calm himself down now.

But as he opened the door to his room, he was left dumbfounded.

The lights were dim. The candles were lit. The sound of running tap could be heard from the bathroom. The fragrance of roses and sandalwood could be felt in the air. The curtains of the huge window were pulled apart, letting the moonlight gaze in from behind the dark clouds. The table was covered with rose petals.

As he moved forward towards the table in a daze, that's when he noticed a red card, standing atop the petals.

With a bated heart, he grabbed the card and opened it.

“Please freshen up.

The dinner will be served soon.

-Shreya”

Daya felt a flutter in his heart.

“Shreya nay…mere liye ye sab....?” He wondered. His heart was once again beating fast but now for a complete opposite reason.

No one had ever made him feel so special before.

He was still in trance when his mobile phone beeped with an incoming message.

“Hurry Up, Please” Just a three word, to the point message from Shreya that made him laugh.

She knows him so well.

Leaving the card back to its original position, Daya moved towards the bathroom only to find himself there just in time. The water was about to run over the edges of the bathtub.

He quickly turned off the tap and moved his hand from the water. The temperature was just right.

Taking a moment, he looked around to see that a change of clothes were already hanging on the pegs behind the door. A fresh towel was placed on the bar next to the bathtub. A new bottle of sandalwood bath-bubbles was placed beside the tub but was not used. A few candles were also placed on the sink that were giving out the fragrance of sandalwood.

He was trying to notice each new thing with his precise gaze but then remember Shreya urged him to hurry up so unbuttoning his shirt, he closed the bathroom door.

—--------------------------

On the roof top, the view was not anything different. A round table was set in the far back corner…..A garland of yellow lights illuminating the scene. A plastic canopy was covering a table set for two. A candlestand was placed above the table along with two bowls of dishes, two placements set on a table with crockery and cutlery.

Feeling new hopes bubbling up in his heart, Abhijeet took some slow steps towards the set table. His fingers played with each other in sheer nervousness.

He looked around briefly in search of Tarika.

The cool air was blowing. The moon was playing peek-a-boo from behind the dark rainy clouds. The atmosphere was chill but the warmth coming from the candles and the bulbs was enough for the night.

A playful smile danced on his lips.

“Suna hai k ajjjjj……Barish barasne ko hai” The angelic teasing voice came from him which froze his world for a moment before he turned around to look at his star.

There, standing in a black netted sari was a bare-faced Tarika but her beauty was still shining like stars tonight. A single gold chain was gracing her neck while her ears were adorned with black pearls.

Her breathtaking smile, twinkling eyes and the way she slightly tucked her curly hairs behind her ear seems to be doing a magic on Abhijeet’s poor heart. He wanted to stop his breath to encapsulate this moment right at this place while also wanting to inhale deeply to capture her smell. Something that was not overpowered by antiseptic and chemicals. The smell that he rarely had a chance to breathe in before, a fragrance screaming TARIKA.

Seeing him lost, Tarika bit her lower lip, totally enjoying the way he was lost in her. It did something to her pride and she was loving it.

“Ahemm….” A few moments later, she cleared her throat to bring him back to the present.

A bewildered Abhijeet looked around wide eyed before looking back at Tarika, hesitantly.

“Wo…Main…Wooo…..kia…Kuch kaha kia apne” He questioned. Face confused. Totally not the usual quick-witted Abhijeet that he is On-duty.

“Wo main keh rahi thi k barish honay ko hai…..tau kyun na hum…(pointing towards the chairs under canopy) ander bethain.” Abhijeet looked behind and closed his eyes tightly ‘Sambhal ja Abhijeet’ He murmured to himself before he looked back at her with a smile and stepped back to let her pass.

Holding her pallu in one hand, Tarika passed by him slowly, letting him inhale the scent that she had quickly pressed on herself for him tonight.

Abhijeet enjoyed her closeness but before she could reach the chair, he pulled it behind, allowing her to slip in and seated and after making sure her comfort, he took his place opposite to her.

For some moments the silence prevailed. And then, Abhijeet asked.

“Tarika…Ye sab…Tum ne….” He started but Tarika cut him in between. The smile was now totally missing from her face.

“Abhijeet ... .Maine aik faisla kia hai……Or mujhe umeed hai k is faisle main tum mera saath do gay” Her tone was bare of any emotion. There was no softness, teasiness, humour or hesitation.

It was the tone of determination. Of a person who has already made up her mind.

Abhijeet hesitated before inquiring.

“Kia….Kia faisla kia hai tumne?”

Tarika paused for a moment, letting his silence drag as her finger tips caressed the fine table cloth. Her poker face was making Abhijeet’s heartbeat dip with each second.

In a low tone, without raising her lashes, Tarika said:

“Maine faisla kia hai Abhijeet k..........Main abh tumhara or intezar nahi kar sakti”

It seemed like a bomb had exploded in Abhijeet’s ear when these words entered the air. His face lost its colour. His heartbeat was strongly beating in his ears as if he was hyperventilating. The world seems to be moving around him. His grip on the chair handrest tightened.

His mouth opened to say something but his mouth seemed to have clogged with his saliva, making it impossible to produce a sound.

Tarika took a deep breath, still not glancing at him.

“Apni zindagi k kai saal…Maine iss umeed main guzar diye k tum aik din agay barho gay….Hamaray rishte ko naam do gay…Mujhe apna naam do gay….” Her tone was wistful.

And then she left a humourless chuckle.

“Likin apni purani yaadon k saath saath shayad tum mujhe bhi bhool gaye”

Abhijeet’s eyes teared up, hearing the accusation in her tone. She had complained to him before but she was angry and still fighting for ‘them’....However, right now it seems that she has lost all hope.

Clearing his throat, he leaned forward, moving his hand forward to grasp hers.

“Tarika, please. Aisa maat bolo….Please mujhe aik mouqa do…..Akhri mouqa. Main tum….tum jo kaho gim…jo bolo gi wo main karun ga…..likin please…..

Please aik mouqa….” The desperation was clearly visible from his tone.

His hand was about to hold her when she pulled them back and got up from the chair. Startled, Abhijeet followed suit and stood up.

Tarika moved towards the edge of the roof looking into the dark sky. Her back facing him.

“TARIKA PLEASE” He pleaded.

But all he heard in reply was silence. He could see her raising her hand up to her face. Is she crying? He wondered.

“Jo bhi kahon gi?” Her voice vibrated in the air, giving him a tiny hope.

“Haan bilkul. Jo bhi….Jo tum chaho” He affirmed without hesitation.

“Tau theek hai” She said before she turned back and went down on her knees, holding a gold ring in her finger, completely taking him by surprise.

“Kia tum mujhse shadi karo gay?” She questioned with glistened eyes while her lips held her quirky smile. Her whole serious persona was totally exchanged by a wishful one.

Abhijeet was totally bowled over by her proposal. Just a moment back, he thought his life had ended or was on the verge of it and now, he was unable to believe that she, his muse, his world, was on her knees, in her netted sari, proposing to him with a ring.

“Abhijeet” Tarika called his name that instantly put him in action and he too got down on his knees in front of her.

“Tum mera fakr(pride) ho Tarika…..Tumhain kissi k samne aisay ghutnoon(knees) pe betha nahi dekh sakta main…..Phir chahay wo main hi hoon” He said and cupped her face to remove the lone tear that had fallen down her cheek. He had all forgotten about his own tears but hers were stabbing his soul.

“Par mera sawal ye tau nahi tha Abhijeet…..Kia…Kia tum mujhse shadi karogay?” Her eyes now full of love were just focused on him.

Leaning forward, cupping her cheek, resting his forehead against hers, closing his eyes, Abhijeet’s trembling lips gave the answer that was so awaited.

“Haan Tarika…..Sirf tumse ... .Bus Tumhain hi tau chaha hai” And with a mixture of a hiccup and giggle, she pulled him into a hug, letting her yearning of years for this man find its safe place.

—----------------------------

Daya came out of the bathroom rubbing his wet hairs with his towel but his hands still when his eyes fell on the figure who was standing in front of the window with her back.

Many distractions were present in the room now for him to remove his gaze like the smell emitting from the warm dishes, a small bouquet of White Orchids was leaning against the arm rest of a sofa, fine china placed on table beside dishes but Daya’s gaze was fixated on her.

Shreya could see his reflection in the glass in front and gave a shy smile. His ardent gaze, his bestowed eyes…..it's still so new for her to feel. To acknowledge and accept that all his affections are finally falling on her.

“Shreya” Her name left his lips like a prayer, making her heart skip a beat as she turned around and Daya felt like falling once again for her.

Wearing a bluish black sari with sequin and embroidery (same one she bought with Purvi ….Yes finally she wore it), her kohl eyes, her hairs straightened out, her hands were surprisingly adoring bangles, a small bindi between her brows, small earrings dangling in her ears.

She was decked up and all, for HIM.

Hanging the towel on the knob of a cupboard, Daya approached her with a warm smile.

Shreya felt such a thrill run down her body seeing him approaching close that she had to rub her arm. He was wearing a light brown T-Shirt that was highlighting his broad shoulders and biceps along with a dark brown Adidas trousers that she had bought for him. She wasn’t sure of the size but now, seeing him filling those clothes made her happy with her purchase.

“Aray ye sab….”

Shreya smiled widely before complimenting.

“App acchay lag rahay hain”

Daya’s cheek tinted with a warm blush but indeed he was happy to know that she appreciated him.

“Thanks to you ….Tumhari choice bohut acchi hai”

Shreya's mind conjured up a totally different meaning of his statement. With her raised brows and meaningful smile, she replied looking at him admiringly.

“Meri choice waqai bohut acchi hai”

The surprise flicker in Daya’s face. For once, he saw the reflection of a Shreya who had once asked him about his preferred Genre in movies and in between all the discussion, indirectly confessed her love right in front of Sachin. For days after, he could not let her statement leave his mind.

“App kahan kho gaye” Shreya waved her hand in front of his face to see his alertness but Daya grabbed the chance and clasped it, now taking her by surprise.

“Waise choice tau…. meri bhi bohut acchi hai” He commented, holding her hand delicately while his eyes admired each minute area of her face.

Shreya blushed helplessly. Daya’s closeness always leaves her mind foggy and her body, heated.

“Tum bohut acchi lag rahi ho…..Janti ho, tumhain yun dekh k tumhari CID main guzri pehli Diwali yaad aa gaye….Tab bhi tumne aisi hi sari pehni thi……Tab bhi tum bohut pyaari lagi thi likin tab…..(taking a deep breath) Tab tak tumhari meri zindagi main kia ehmiyat ho gi, uska andaza mujhe nahi tha”

He hardly confessed such feelings but now as he was, Shreya didn’t want to let the chance go.

“Or abh?” She almost asked in a whisper.

“Abh…..(Giving a toe-curling smile) Abh lagta hai k tumhare bina ye zindagi janay kaise abh tak guzri…(his tone deepened) Zindagi jeena tau abh aya hai….Kissi k liye….kissi k saath k liye….Kissi k saath se” He left her hand and moved it up on her face, letting the back of his fingers caressing the side of her jaw. Shreya felt shiver by his touch, her body was literally on fire, her hand raised up to clasp any part of his arm that she could hold, her feet moved a step back to create some space.

It was getting hard for her to breathe.

But Daya wasn’t allowing much space tonight and so, he stepped ahead, forcing her to back up till Shreya felt the cold surface of the huge window behind her heated flesh.

She was trapped between the two surfaces. One cold and one HOT.

Looking at his deep meaningful and hypnotizing eyes was so difficult for her so her gaze was wandering around, hoping to find a distraction that could help her settle down her fast paced heart beat.

But when he was so close that his dull body wash scent could clearly be smelt, how could her senses stray.

Daya was completely entranced by the shades of red that he got to witness on her cheeks. His thumb was slowly but somewhat seductively tracing each pore of her cheek.

“Daya….Please….”, She pleaded. Please stop this torture? Please get away a little? Please let me breath? Please what? She didn't know what she was pleading about. Her lips dry and trembling. Her body was shaking.

Hearing his name without any salutation did wonders to his heart.

His mind knew that he had to stop but his heart demanded a few more moments to be spent near her.

But he also knew, the future will hold much much more of such moments.

Allowing his thumb to feel her warmth with his skin with a last swipe, he pulled his hand back but kept staying at his place.

“Tumhare kareeb rehne ki….Adaat honay lagi hai, Shree….” Daya whispered, giving voice to his thoughts.

Shreya just wanted to hide somewhere and allow herself to take a deep breath because the way Daya was hovering over her, taking all the space in front with his personality, his actions, his gaze, his words, seems to be making her dizzy, breathless.

Giving a chuckle, Daya finally backed up a step, allowing her a moment while himself turning towards the set table.

“Wah…..meri favourite bhindi, matar pulao, garma garam roti …or….gajar ka halwa” Taking off the lids from each container, Daya let his voice vibrate in the room, allowing normalcy to get back to the environment.

“Par Mihika kahan hai? Wo hamaray saath nahi kha rahi….aj jaldi so gaye kiya??”

Hearing Mihika’s name, Shreya shook the slight daze off her spiked up senses and took a step, still on her shaky feet but trying to keep the words clear.

“Wo aj Purvi k saath time spend karna chahti hai…..Dono nay koi show dekhne ka plan banaya hai” Shreya informed him.

“Hmmm….or tum ne?” He asked while readying a plate for her.

“Apke saath time spend karne ka……” She confessed, finally getting some courage too. Holding the bouquet of White Orchids from the sofa, Shreya presented them to Daya with a shy smile which he gladly accepted.

Daya served her before sampling out food for himself.

Sitting across, looking at each other through the flickering candle light, they enjoyed the dinner in silence.

Their first date. If they must name it.

Daya adored the way her hairs were covering her face again and again while she was bending her head to eat. A memory of Shreya with a headband from her first few months in CID came back to his mind.

‘Saal beet gaye ... .Par tum main aj bhi wo pehli Shreya kahin moujood hai…… Wo chanchal Shreya jo hamesha zindagi ko has k jeenay wali thi……Jo sab ka man mohne wali thi…Wo Shreya, jiss nay mujh jaise pathar dil ko bhi naram honay pe majboor kar diya k main khud ko us say pyaar karne se….rok hi nahi paya….or uske baad, kissi or ko chahne ka khayal bhi, kabhi dimagh se guzra hi nahi….(a wishful sigh) Main wada karta hoon Shreya, tumhain duniya ki sab khushiyaan deyne ki main poori koshish karoon ga…..Meri zindagi ka maqsad abh sirf tumhari or Mihika ki khushi hoga…..’ He promised himself silently.

Shreya could felt his loving gaze and silently, she also made some promises of her own.

Behind her, the window was now covered with rain droplets as if washing all the sadness away from their life. It had always been a part of some of their important moments.

On the other corner of corridor, Mihika was all settled in the Purvi's bed after having dinner with Purvi and Pankaj. Purvi was receiving the snacks she had order at the room door while Pankaj was jumping through the channels to find the possible victim, a Child-friendly series to disect all the reality Vs fake scenarios. A battle he and Purvi always have.

ACP sir was already in bed with a sweet smile gracing his lips, for once happy with his team and their progress in life.

While above the roof, the rain also witnessed the first congratulatory dinner enjoyed by the just engaged couple.

Although the rain was now pouring strongly all around them, nothing could dampen the smiles on the faces of Tarika and Abhijeet who were now sitting side by side and sharing warm glances. The now cold dinner was all there for the namesake as their warm eyes were enough to feed their appetite.

It seems like the long spell(curse) of sadness in the lives of CID’s two best officers, which lasted 8 years, has now finally been broken.

And all it had taken was the finding of a little girl.

—----------------------

Ok people, so I actually think, this is a brilliant place to end this story cause I am not creative enough to build up cases. What do you think?

But yes, there are a few scenes that I have thought of and a few episodes that involve Shreya which I would really like to explore.

So till the next update, take care.

I will try my best to update asap but make no promises

Do read, vote, comment.

Love,

Ana.
