SHARAD MALHOTRA

Tell us about Vodafone Yeh Hai Jalwa on 9X.

Vodafone Yeh Hai Jalwa is a very unique reality show. Since this is my first reality show, I wanted to do something different. The concept of common people and celebrities competing together has never been done before. The competition is not a solo or between couples; an entire team will compete with others, and only the best will win. Vodafone Yeh Hai Jalwa will provide the audiences an opportunity to prove their judgment skills. This involvement with the aam janata is the USP of the show.

What made you sign on Vodafone Yeh Hai Jalwa? What are your expectations
from the show?

I like doing things that are not routine; things that are 'different'. When 9X approached me with the show, I liked the fact that the show was unique and had a format nobody else had tried before. So that's what made me sign up. And I guess that since it is so different and has such a large scale, I do expect it to do very well indeed.

Tell us about your team members – the Toofani Toli?

My team Toofani Toli is a combination of five professionally trained dancers. Each hails from a different part of the country. They're all good, and I'm sure the audiences will like them.

How will you train your team?

We will rehearse after I finish shooting every day – so it'll be about two to three hours a day,.Every one says that since my team has professional dancers it will be quite easy, but what they don't understand is that they are five professionals, and each will have their differences and egos, and my task will be to maintain discipline in the team, and to manage the team. That's going to be quite a task!

What do you think will be the USP of Vodafone Yeh Hai Jalwa? What's your plan of action?

The concept of Vodafone Yeh Hai Jalwa is a very big USP of the show. My team members are experts, and that will make the performances special. The plan is to have maximum fun and try and do something different every week.

The show has no jury- what is your take on that?

That's an awesome thing. Our lovely fans will be deciding on the winner. I believe that the audience is intelligent and knows best. We will seriously try to entertain our fans through our performances and let the aam janata decide – it's much better that way.

Who will be your strongest competition on the show?

All of them!

An interesting format gone waste

Yeh Hai Jalwa
Sunday, 8pm, 9X

The idea behind this one more dance-based reality show could have held a glimmer of hope. After all it has nine TV celebrities helming a team of five, each of which represents a particular segment from the society like working professionals, college kids, housewives, street urchins, foreigners, amongst others (interesting).

But then it's the show's addiction to a famous face that makes it a high on dejavu, predictable me-too, since most of its celebrity dancing gurus have been shaking more than a leg on other dance based reality shows (Ronit Roy, Prachi Desai, Husain Kuwajerwala, Rakhi Sawant) and myriad telly award functions in the recent past. Sawant's get-up as a guy in one of the recent Jalwa dances, even looked a direct lift from one of her Nach Baliye 3 acts.

With the camera concentrating on the actor performer and the dance acts being star driven (notable exceptions being Rakhi Sawant and Sharad Malhotra's acts in the first competition episode) one hardly gets to see the mettle of their team members. It would be interesting to see the team members take centre stage instead of being reduced to another set of mere dancing extras. Leader-team interactions beyond mere snapshots and name introductions too could help the audience connect with the participants because without them, the show as of now seems nothing more than a celebrity gush fest.

As regards the show's USP of replacing a permanent jury with a junta ka voice, can we have a non-star struck fan doing the job with greater visibility unlike the house wife turned judge in one of the recent episodes who just disappeared after commenting on the first two acts. So once again the platform of evaluation, here too is hijacked by film star judges visiting the show to promote their films, making the maximum noise.

Continuing on the noise factor, hosts Smriti Irani and Sakshi Tanwar seem to be the only ones making the most of it as of now. However, the telly bahu duo is quite engaging and even entertaining in their debut anchor act together. The lone star in the review belongs to them.

Verdict
Could become worth a watch if it manages to truly exploit its differential.

The 2nd coming

Smriti Irani comes clean on her comeback

How does it feel to shoot for a Balaji soap after a gap of 11 months?
I haven't yet started shooting for it. I haven't got a briefing of what the role will be. Obviously it won't deviate much from the shades of the character I have portrayed earlier

What prompted you to come back to the serial?
Both Ekta Kapoor and Star Plus approached me. Currently, I am doing my serial Mere Apne and hosting a reality show Yeh Hai Jalwa, which is scheduled for another three months. I have the time to devote to Kyunki... which is why I took it up.

What about your differences with Ekta Kapoor?
Honestly, I didn't have any issues with her. I am just an actor. When she needed me to be out of the story, I quit and now it is her prerogative to have me back.

So, what are you looking for in the role?
As I told you, I really don't know what the role will be like. As soon as I agreed, the channel decided to have a press conference to announce my return.

We read that there will be some kind of plastic surgery to introduce you..
I have no clue.

Have you watched Kyunki... after you quit. What is your take on Gautami Gadgil portraying your role?
I never saw Kyunki... when I was acting in it. And now with my serial Mere Apne and my two children around, I didn't have the time.

Is it because your earlier production Virruddh and now Mere Apne isn't doing well that you have decided to revisit the role that made you popular?
I'll have you know that Mere Apne is the No.1 show on 9X. Apart from Vinodji who is a legend and the centre of attraction, the youngsters have done a very good job. Whether it is Gauri Nigudkar, Akanksha Garodia, Delnaaz Paul or Shahbaaz Khan or Kishori Shahane I have got a bunch of extremely talented actors. As for Virruddh, it has won close to eight awards in the past eight months. These serials have helped me make a position for myself as a creator and writer. I utilised the break from Kyunki... to establish different facets on TV. These days every film actor is getting into production and on TV, I have the distinction of pulling it off successfully. Now, as Tulsi I have come a full circle.

How is your experience hosting Yeh Hai Jalwa?
Yeh Hai Jalwa is one of the best experiences I have had. It has exposed my sense of humour, which people didn't know I had. After hosting Yeh Hai Jalwa, I have realised that reality shows are not as easy as they look. A lot of hardwork goes into it.

You seem to be enjoying hosting the show with Saakshi Tanwar.
My husband (Zubin) rates Saakshi as the best actress. I have worked with her off and on in the last six years but this is the first time we are together at length. I have realised that she is a very good human being. We share a great comfort level and that shows on screen. As for the participants, except for Rosa and Rakhi Sawant I have practically worked with all of them and feel bad when one of them gets eliminated.

Don't you want to participate in any show?
Me and dance! Seriously, I did get a few offers for reality shows but I was too busy.

Are you looking forward to going back on the Balaji sets?
I am a professional who takes each day as it comes. What is most memorable and special about Kyunki.. is the audience attached to it and I give prime importance to that.

Home truth

Prachi Desai has been house-hunting over the last year, but rising property rates are preventing her from acquiring her dream home.

Vickey Lalwani

Prachi Desai

Is our Television Industry so cash strapped that an actor doing two leading shows cannot afford to buy a two BHK flat in a decent society? Prachi Desai, the reigning heroine of Balaji Telefilms' camp wanted to buy a house in Oberoi Towers in Andheri and she had almost locked the deal for Rs 1.5 crore. Our source says, "By the time she got to sign the papers, the estate rates shot up and the price for same flat swelled to Rs 2.1 crore. Hence, Prachi backed out."

Couldn't Prachi, who has been playing the lead in Kasamh Se and has won a dance reality show, afford to shell out Rs 60 lakh more? Says our source, "One needs to understand that Kasamh Se was Prachi's first TV serial and so she wasn't paid a big amount. No actor gets big bucks in his/her first TV serial. And Rock On is her first film."

When contacted, Prachi simply said, "I am having a great time in the entertainment industry. The day is not far off when I will buy a house of my choice."

When Rakhi danced with Mika…

A recent TV reality show saw the controversial Mika and Rakhi coming together on one platform.

It happened at the music launch of Sanjay Gupta's Woodstock Villa on the show. Mika is one of the singers associated with the movie and Rakhi a participant on the show. Interestingly, when all the contestants were invited on stage, everyone including Rakhi went but not Abhishek (Rakhi's boyfriend) who is also one of the contestants of the show. We asked Rakhi about this interesting twist.

Did you not feel offended of being on the same stage with Mika?

Initially I did feel offended and flatly refused to go on the stage. But I went on Tulsi and Parvati's insistence, who are the hosts on the show. The children in my group also requested me not to react and just stay calm so I changed my mind and went on stage for their sake and even danced with Mika.

Then what's your take on Abhishek refusing to go on stage?

I completely respect it. That was absolutely his own decision. When a particular person in the past has humiliated you so badly one will not wish to share some space or platform with that person.

The controversy between Rakhi and Mika started with Mika's birthday bash a couple of years back where Mika kissed Rakhi and the aftermath of it saw Abhishek and her bodyguard fighting with Mika.

Sakshi denies being admitted to hospital

Sakshi Tanwar aka Parvati, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii has denied that she was admitted to Bombay Hospital after shooting for Mahabharata in Ladakh. The actress says she is very much busy shooting for all her shows.

Sakshi clarifies, "I was never admitted to Bombay hospital and I am working on all my shows. I am tired of answering people's calls regarding my well-being. I have so many scenes in each of my shows so how can I not be shooting."

Adds Sakshi, "I have constantly been shooting for the last four days. The shooting for Mahabharata in Ladakh is over now I am busy shooting for Kahaani. Such reports can even harm my career."

Suraj Rao, Creative Head from Mahabharata, reiterates, "Sakshi was not admitted to the hospital. Altitude problem is quite common but it was not so serious. She was quite normal."

Sakshi plays an important character in Mahabharata. She is also anchoring Yeh Hai Jalwa with Smriti Irani and shooting for Kahaani.

The friendship between soap queen Ekta Kapoor and the new princess of television dance shows and cinema — Prachi Desai has come a long way since the soap queen cast the teenager in Kasamh Se. The apple of Ekta's eye, Prachi, who is now shedding her simplistic bahu image and turning into a glam doll with an item number in Farhan Akhtar's Rock On is often seen with the K-queen at events.

Their friendship has surfaced mainly after the reality dance show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa where Prachi was declared the winner. Ekta, who is known as a tough taskmaster and is infamous for not allowing any stars to take breaks while shooting, surprisingly gave Prachi a much needed break to prepare for the dance show. Ekta and Prachi were also spotted at a famous joint chit chatting over mocktails. With the queen bee of soaps by her side for support Prachi will surely go a long way.
