Is it right to make Shuri Black Panther after Chadwick's death?

Posted: 3 years ago

Editing this post because I have woken up thanks to Shy.

Kevin Feige has decided to not recast T'Challa with any other actor, instead he's going to make Shuri take the mantle of Black Panther.

Though if you think rationally, it's a  decision made on fans demand who are highly driven by emotions and not logic.

Because now Marvel would have to kill T'Challa off screen, which would be an insult to the character.
No actor is bigger than the character.

Don Cheadle replaced Terrence Howard as Rhodey.

Mark Ruffalo replaced Edward Norton as Bruce Banner.

Both replacements were not better than the original but were still accepted by the audience.

Even the much acclaimed performance of Heath Ledger as Joker didn't overshadow the character to stop other actors from playing the same role.

Joaquin Phoenix was also whole heartedly accepted as Joker by the audience.

Do you think it's the right decision to not recast T'Challa?

Feige uncle had already decided that they won't recast and shuri aunty probably would take up the mantle unless she is cancelled by twitter.

However it should be recasted , there are many tchalla stories that should be told, no need to get emotional about it.

Ah, I was really living under a rock. Thanks for picking that up for me.

They don't have to kill him off even if they're not replacing him.   T'Challa can be busy off screen as they explore other characters and parts of Wakanda.  In the comics Shuri became BP when T'Challa was still alive.  I'd rather have Okoye or Nakia as the new BP though - Danai and Lupita are better actresses with greater screen presence.

If they want a few more years down the road they can bring back T'Challa with another actor but at this point it would be like hiring new actors to play Tony & Steve - far too soon.

@bold
In both cases above, the original actors did not die.
and Joaquin became 'The Joker' OUTSIDE the Dark Knight Trilogy.

So, these examples are INVALID.

Recasting Chadwick's BP with some other actor would be a far more insulting and illogical thing to do IMHO, considering  how much Chadwick was loved for his performance, how passionate he was for the role, and how the film served as a landmark for Black Superheroes in HW.๐Ÿ‘

In the future, they could make another BP movie, with another actor๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

but as far as MCU is concerned, its totally understandable (and makes sense) that they're retiring the character, and having Shuri as BP's successor.

Like someone already mentioned, Shuri became the BP in the comics too, so I don't see any problem here.

What about Michael Gambon replacing Richard Harris as Dumbledore after his death?

Is this example "valid" for you?

Many people didn't like Gambon's portrayal of Dumbledore and preferred Harris, but still it was important to recast because character was bigger than the actor.

Harry Potter series would've never been the same if J.K Rowling had decided to remove Dumbledore's character because the actor playing him has died.

@bold

you answered it yourself.

In Marvel/DC universes, n number of actors can play the same character without having to recast and it wouldn't matter much because ....
multiverse,  time-travel or anything (insert any science-fiction element here) and the story goes on....

That's the biggest benefit with comic-based/science-fiction/superheroes films.

Besides, MCU is just one of the many big-screen universes.

They have an established X-Men Universe.

And if they're really dying to write films/stories for the character, 4-5 years from now, they can anyways create a separate universe OR a standalone film with another actor as Black Panther.

Recasting Chadwick in MCU would be like replacing Paul Walker in the Fast & Furious Franchise,

I know Paul appeared in more films and had longer run than Chadwick. BUT I am equating them in terms of impact & emotional connect with the audience.

There's nothing wrong, if they're trying to honor the actor, within the franchise.

So now your excuse is that it's science fiction so it's okay to kill T'Challa which was not possible with Dumbledore?

HP comes under fantasy genre and there's not much difference between sci-fi and fantasy.

Even Rowling could've pulled out some magical plot device out of her ass if she wanted to remove Dumbledore's character.

Fans can give whatever excuses they want, the bottom line is that Marvel now have to somehow kill T'Challa off screen to remove his character, which would be a great disservice to him.

There can be n number of Black Panthers, but there's only one T'Challa in the MCU.

Nothing wrong with honoring the actor, but marvel is doing it by dishonouring the character...and character is always bigger than the actor imo.

So, replacing Chadwick with another character wouldn't be disservice to the actor...but having Shuri continue T'Challa's legacy would be a disservice? yeah, right!

Also, there can be n number of T'Challas as well, coz there are n universes.  MCU is just one fictional universe.  They can introduce another T'Challa, in another universe, if they're really dying to write stories for T'Challa's version Black Panther.

Not sure, what's the problem with makers trying to honor Chadwick's memory .....when neither his fans, nor his family, not Black Panther fans, nor his co-actors etc etc etc have any problem with it.

Wouldn't be the first time in history also, when a character will be retired/killed off because of actor's sudden death. If they replaced him, they won't even be able to show his flashbacks / his scenes as BP, in later movies in MCU. They are immortalizing this version of T'Challa / Black Panther, within this franchise.

But off course, they are just 'excuses'.
