Part 14- Tango of memories and aspirations
"How are the preparations? GK asked leaning her head back to see millions of stars decorating the sky above.
"We'll be done by tomorrow, Rewa replied in a mechanical voice as she swiped on her tablet.
GK nodded and closed her eyes to try to get a shut eye. But sleep was miles away even at this odd hour, no wonder she was loitering around in the gardens discussing business when the entire house was sleeping.
She'll be leaving after two days.
To say, that it was going to be easy would be a blatant lie GK was not willing to tell herself for she had started to feel attached towards certain someone but that didn't mean she was going to stop. This was not her place. This was not where she belonged. She had a business to run, people to take care of and revenge to take on. Indore was not her home. And back home, things had definitely turned ugly in her absence.
"Rewa...
"Yes? Rewa replied looking up from her tablet.
"Why did Kaushalya act as my mother? How did dad agree to this? How could you agree? Why did you agree? GK murmured, her eyes reflecting the clear skies above.
To say Rewa was baffled would have an understatement, for such a dangerous question had been flung at her that too shrouded in mist of uncertainty. Rewa sighed and took up her seat by GK's side. This was supposed to pop up sooner or later.
"When you woke up after the accident, you had reverted back to your old chirpy self or should I say, you suffered retrograde amnesia and forgot everything beyond maa taking you in after your mother's death. Doctor said that your brain had selectively suppressed the memories that bought you pain. You had forgotten maa's truth and yours too... Rewa trailed.
"Ah, dad must have been absolutely delighted for he never wanted me to get involved with Pops, GK chuckled.
"Yes, Bhushan sir could not have wanted more and thus we shifted back to Indore. You treated maa as your mummy and me as your sister, just like old times. Seeing your attachment towards maa, Bhushan sir fed you with a lie that they had gotten married which you had forgotten due to accident. You were overjoyed for you wanted everyone to be happy. And I just wanted to smile with my old di...
GK looked at Rewa and patted her head. "But this is the real me
Rewa chuckled at GK's remark who looked up baffled, "What's so amusing?
"Lying with a straight face is something you learned after becoming GK
"I'm still your employer, Rewa Gupta!, GK spoke up, her tone laced with authority.
"I'm well aware...GK Rewa replied as GK sighed.
"After falling in love with Akshat jiju, smile never left your face. You were truly happy with him... Rewa trailed and turning to GK, clasped her hand between hers, "...and your happiness still lies with him. He is a changed man and loves you so much. Why must you leave?
"Because happiness is transient. Chasing after momentary peace is something I've stopped long ago... GK pulled her hands away and stood away.
"Vese bhi...good times never last long, and with that GK walked off leaving Rewa alone.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The next morning passed by in a rush and soon it was evening.
"I don't understand the point behind going out to discuss all these files, we could have just discussed them in the study, GK enquired exasperated as she stepped out of the car.
Today had been an odd one in all aspects. Hubby had miraculously disappeared after their workout this morning and then sometime past 9, Rewa had whisked her away and was guiding her throughout the city while explaining the balance and finances in her absence. And when she had almost started to enjoy the slight breeze, Rewa had hurried her home saying that she was drop dead tired and that she was not a workaholic like GK and needed to rest.
As GK stepped past the main door, dark silence enveloped her.
"Rewa? GK called out warily but no reply came.
Clenching her teeth, GK took a cautious step forward and as something moved in her hindsight, her right hand went straight for the knife tucked in her skirt when suddenly the lights blinked on and shouts of "Surprise! rang all across.
GK looked on confused as Akshat, Dadi, Rewa, the sons and bahus, Jayce and her father smiled at her. There were others too that she had no clue about but what the effing hell was going on?! The entire hall was sparkling like a Christmas tree!
"Happy birthday, Di! Rewa chimed and hugged GK, taking her by surprise.
Birthday?' GK thought perplexed as she wracked her brains to remember what the exact date was?
"I knew it that you forgot...it's your birthday today! Rewa smiled.
And then it clicked. It actually was her birthday. How old was she now?! 21 or 22? Not that it mattered though.
Wiping the baffled expression off, GK smirked, "I take it that this was the reason for your peculiar behaviour today?
Rewa nodded, "Jiju wanted to give you a surprise, after all it's your first birthday as his wife!
"Surprise? I see! Though I'd recommend you to exercise caution the next time you plan on dropping such surprises on me because I am not really a fan, and if these lights would have switched on a second late, Dear Lakshmi bahu over there might have lost her head, GK flashed a vicious smile as she signalled towards the knife tucked in her skirt and Lakshmi gulped.
Thankfully she wasn't loud and no one heard her.
"W-Why don't we c-cut the cake? Rewa suggested as GK nodded and approached the cake.
"Happy birthday, a soft voice wished her as she looked up into the man's spectacled albeit enigmatic eyes.
As GK picked up the knife, Akshat's palm encircled over hers and she looked back into his eyes. As he smiled, she turned back and concentrated on cutting the cake. This was troublesome. He was a man and yet those sweet looks he gave felt more pious than a maiden's. And even though she was a woman, she legit felt like a rake for finding a man sweet!
Once the cake was cut, as GK fed dadi a piece, dadi offered her a bite too.
"I..um...don't... GK stammered feeling helpless.
She was averse to sweets and yet hubby's mother was insisting with little stars afloat in her tired eyes.
"Help! She whispered turning to Akshat who just shrugged and mentally groaning at her pathetic self, GK obliged and chomped on the creamy piece burgeoning with chocochips.
As the chocolate melted in her mouth, GK moaned at its velvety texture and Akshat smiled. Mission feed-Guddan-meetha successful!
And soon the couples around started taking to dance floor as a soft music started lighting up the ambience.
"May I have the dance? Akshat asked forwarding his palm in GK's direction.
"I don't dance, Mr. Jindal GK refused straight faced as Akshat's face fell.
However his hand that was about to pull back was held as he looked up into her eyes, "That doesn't mean, I can't though
Ecstatic, as Akshat pulled GK to the dance floor, they swayed to the melody steadily while gazing into each other's eyes.
GK was the first to break the eye contact. She had long back forsaken dancing and yet the crestfallen look on his handsome face had forced her to bite her blunt words and take up his offer. Akshat Jindal was one dangerous man...
But she wasn't docile either.
Slipping her left palm behind his neck, she shifted closer to him and snickered as he turned to stone for a moment before regaining his composure.
Such a desirable man he was! If only he wasn't in love with her, she could have simply given into her first-of-a-kind desires and be done with those anxious imaginary thorns that were pricking her chest as of right now.
"You've made it a habit to misuse my generosity! GK whispered into his ear as his hold on her waist tightened.
"What do you mean? He asked confused.
"Feigning innocence won't work, hubby. I'm quite sure the idea of forcing me to eat the cake through dadi must have been your brainchild.
"As expected, you're sharp...My Lady!
As his throaty laughter laced with a twinge of mischief caressed her ear, GK shuddered. She had no clue that words could sound so delicious!
"Well...where is my present? GK asked diverting the topic.
"Hmm...I am here, what else do you need? Akshat asked.
GK withdrew her face away and glided a finger across his jawline, "Need is necessity and Necessity gives rise to dependency and dependency makes people worthless and incompetent. I have no requirement for such needs though it's true that...I want you but I don't really need you...
And with that GK pulled away and had turned to leave when a melodious voice reached her ears.
Itne akele thhe hum tum
Tum mujhme, main tum mein ghum
She turned around shocked as Akshat strummed the strings of guitar.
Mere kanon mein aahista se...uss roz kaha tha jo tumne
Akshat approached her as he reminisced the first time Guddan had confessed, on their wedding night.
Flashback
"What the hell did you say? Akshat shouted
"H-hum aapse pyaar karte hain! Guddan shouted as Akshat turned around with a menacing look in his eyes.
"Maine tumse shaadi sirf isliye ki hai kyuki...
"Humein pata hai ki aapne mujhse...nhi aapne dobara shaadi apni pehli biwi ke liye ki hai
"Fir tum ye sab mujhse...how did you even think that I'll reciprocate! Dil mein abhi bhi sirf Antara hi meri biwi hai!! He shouted agitated.
"I never said that you have to reciprocate. Aapse pyaar karne se pehle humse shart thodi rakhi thi ki aap bhi humse pyaar karenge aur vese bhi humein aapse pyaar batakar thodi hua tha, vo toh bas ho gaya! Aapke dil mein Antara ji hai toh koi baat nhi, humaare dil mein aap hain aur humein aapko yeh batana tha so humse keh diya! Ab hum toh chale sone kyuki aaj ka din bahot tiring tha aur fir kal aur bhi rasmein hongi...
He could only look on gobsmacked as she removed her jewelleries. Isse pehle ki vo use reject karta, she herself spoke on his behalf. Strange girl!
"Ek cheez aur...humein andaaza hai ki aap apne dil mein humein entry nhi denge par hum shaant nhi baithenge. Agar aap front door se allow nhi karenge, toh hum back door se ghusenge aur agar wo bhi band hua toh hum darwaaze todkar aapke dil mein ghusenge!
Kisi aur se naa wo kehna...
GK clutched her head, as blurry images poured in her head haphazardly. What was she recalling?!
Tum mere ho...mere rehna...
Tum saath mera hardam dena...
Akshat started to circle around GK while continuing with the song. He clenched his teeth as she winced. She was definitely recalling something and as doctor had told him, forcefully racking your brains was a painful experience. But he had to do it because their time was almost over and she was still planning on leaving.
Dono jahan mein ek jagah
Jo mujhe badi mehfuz lage
As GK was trying hard to jog her memory, her ears perked up and her eyes widened.
"Wow, you play Guitar!? Guddan asked enthusiastic.
"What about it? Akshat stopped playing the guitar and kept it to the side.
"Why did you stop? Humein bhi sunna hai! Guddan whined.
"That...is none of my concern, Akshat shrugged as he got up to leave.
"Fine! Jyaada bhaav mat khaiye, humein bhi bajana aata hai! Guddan pouted offended as she took the guitar and strummed the strings over the sound hole with the pick.
An absolutely horrible sound reverberated across the room as Akshat's left eye twitched.
"Hmm...this sounds funny.. Guddan trailed thoughtfully and yet again struck the pick against the strings harder.
An even ghastly sound echoed across their room as Akshat shielded his ears and turned around to blow her off.
"What were you saying- Humein bajana aata hai! Akshat mocked and continued, "Baja toh tum rahi ho, mere kaan ke pardon ka band! For your information, you have to press your fingertips against the strings towards the neck side With that he leaned closer and positioned her fingertips over the strings and pressed them down to apply pressure.
"Ouch! Guddan winced as Akshat withdrew his hands and turned her finger to see that it had been cut by the string.
Glancing up at her face, he shook his head at the horrified look that had dawned in her eyes on seeing just one drop of blood.
"Tumse nhi hota toh why do you even try? Sighing he put the guitar aside and started tending to her bleeding finger.
"Failure doesn't mean success will never come, Guddan replied.
GK couldn't believe it. She looked at Akshat shocked. The memory had been so vivid as if the scene was playing right in front of her eyes.
Ye baahein ye baahein ye teri...Bas itni si...duniya hai meri
Baahon mein ghere rehna...
"What are you playing at, Mr. Jindal? Gk growled between clenched teeth as her head started throbbing.
Tum mere ho...mere rehna...
Tum saath mera..hardam dena...
"I am just trying my best to hold onto what's precious to me, Akshat replied as he kept the guitar to the side.
"Your efforts are in vain, Mr. Jindal! No matter how many beautiful memories, you incite...you cannot stop me.
"But I'll still try. Tum toh bas hamara pyaar bhuli ho, main toh pyaar karna hi bhul gaya tha. Tumne mujhe tab nhi chhoda, main kese chod du
GK chuckled, "There is a fine line between diligence and stubbornness, you seem to have mixed up the boundaries...
And with that GK fainted, into his arms.
So, how was it?!
