A Heart That Loves - Chapter 1

"Cake was nice," he interrupted, not wanting to extend the conversation too long. He had a lot of important work to do.

"I know right! I ordered it especially for you! Of course it had to be nice!" she said happily, now looking at him expectantly.

"Now what?" he asked, looking at her expectant face.

She pointed to cake and then to herself, gesturing him to feed her. And obliging to her silent request, he picked up a piece and fed her.

As soon as she was done chewing he said, "I need the Mehta's file for the meeting," ending the birthday mood then and there, once and for all.

"You go to the meeting and you'll find the file there," Khushi replied, smiling. And with that she gave him a quick yet tight hug before she gave him her brightest smile and then walked out of his cabin towards her own, which was next to his...

With that Arnav just got straight to work, as if nothing had even happened...

**********************************************************

That night, Khushi was sitting down on her couch, casually watching TV in her pyjamas after having roti and curry for dinner along with jalebis.

After a while, she was all set to go to bed - after all she had to get up early the next day to go to office. Despite being the boss' girlfriend, she had no advantages or leeway when it came to work.

She was just about to get off the couch when she heard a loud knock on her apartment door.

She turned to look at the clock with confusion and saw that it was 11 o' clock at night.

Who would be at the door now?' she thought.

She wasn't sure whether to open the door or not at this time, especially when she didn't know who it was.

Deciding to just ignore it and go to bed, she started towards the bedroom when the door was knocked again - this time much louder.

Getting scared, she grabbed her phone from the table and dialed the one person who she felt safe with here: Arnav.

As the phone started ringing, she suddenly heard Arnav's ringtone playing from inside her house.

She started looking around when all of a sudden it clicked in her head that the ringtone was not heard from inside her apartment, but from outside it.

She sighed in relief that it was just Arnav and went towards the door.

When Khushi opened the door she was met with a staggering Arnav who lost balance and almost fell onto her, his head now resting against her shoulder and his body weight supported by hers.

Khushi caught onto him instantly - though she did it with a lot of difficulty - not letting him fall.

"Arnavji?! What's wrong?" she asked worried, as this had never happened before. And then when the smell of alcohol hit her nose she asked, "Are you... drunk?"

"Khushi," he said in his drunken state. And that's all she got from him.

She closed the door and locked it before she repositioned them so that Arnav's one arm, which she was holding on to, was around her shoulder and her free arm was around his waist.

Slowly, she got him to walk with her to her bedroom - it was really hard as he had no sense of balance right now because of his drunken state, but they eventually managed it to the bed.

Khushi lay him down carefully on her bed and then took his shoes off one by one, before tucking the blanket around him securely.

"She left me!" Arnav mumbled, the grief clear in his voice. "She left me all alone," he said, brokenly.

Khushi felt pain searing through her heart for the man who lay in front of her.

She'd never seen him in this state before...

In fact everything that had happened just now had been a first.

Arnav had never come to her apartment late night before. If he came it would always be during the day - he never stayed later than early evening.

And she'd never seen him get drunk before either. In fact he never drank as far as she knew - unless it was a business party, in which he would take very little alcohol just for manners' sake. But like this? Completely drunk? Never.

More than this, the pain she was seeing right now - she had never ever seen before in the one year that she had been with him, whether that is as his PA or his girlfriend. He had always been a strong man no matter what came at him in terms of work. And personally, he never really showed any emotion to be honest - except for anger of course. And once in a blue moon, she would see a hint of a smile sometimes when she did crazy things but that would vanish within seconds! And that was the only emotions she had ever seen on his face - other than that, blank.

Considering all this, seeing him in this state today really shocked Khushi but it also made her worry immensely for the man she loved. What had happened that he was going through so much agony now? That too on his birthday? And who is this she' that left him? The mention of this she' should have made Khushi jealous, but at this moment she didn't feel anything except worry and pain for her love.

She felt her heart go out to him as he kept mumbling, "Khushi, she left me. She left me! All alone!"

Unable to hold herself any longer, she climbed into the bed and joined him under the blanket, wrapping her arms around him, bringing him close to her chest, repeating, "It's going to be okay. You're not alone. I'm here for you. Everything's going to be okay," as she stroked his hair softly, soothingly.

Arnav whimpered as he snuggled closer to Khushi, resting his head between her bosoms, hugging her almost like a baby does its mother. Within a minute he finally quietened down, feeling at peace in the arms that provided the warmth that he had craved, even without him consciously realising it.

Khushi continued to stroke his hair as she felt the relief washing over her when he calmed down and eventually fell asleep.

She placed a tender kiss on the top of his forehead as she prayed to her Devi Maiyya that she get rid of all his pain and problems. She was willing take the brunt of it for him, but she didn't want Devi Maiyya to give him any grief.

Khushi should have felt uncomfortable with the way they were both positioned right now considering their history, but it just felt so natural to her with Arnav.

She thought back to how their relationship had started...

*Flashback*

She had left her Amma, Babuji, Buaji and Jiji who were in Lucknow, to search for a job in Delhi.

Khushi was from a middle class family who weren't extremely rich, but did everything to educate their daughters to the best of their ability. Both Payal and Khushi being very smart, had been able to get through their college and university with scholarships, passing almost all exams with 95% or more.

Out of the two Khushi had always been the craziest as well as the one with the biggest dreams. While Payal had been happy to find a job within Lucknow itself, Khushi had been eager to move to Delhi and find a job there before working her way up the ladder.

Khushi didn't care about money - no, that wasn't it at all. But she did want to explore the working world and work her way up as it had always been an interest for her... And also, she wanted to be able to provide her family with enough money for them to become financially stable - not necessarily rich, but as mentioned before, financially stable. All this meant coming to Delhi, where there were a lot more opportunities compared to Lucknow.

Her parents had downright refused at first, but after a lot of pleading and explaining, they let her go extremely reluctantly. They had told her on strict conditions that if she didn't find a job within a month she must come back, and Khushi too had agreed.

And so she had gone to Delhi and rented out a tiny room that she could just about afford and started searching for jobs.

One day she came across an ad on the newspaper stating that AR Designs was searching for a PA and Khushi had applied for the job without delay. She knew how reputed the company was and if by any chance she got the job, she knew that it would definitely take her up to new heights if she worked hard enough.

She got called in for an interview two days later and that, had been when she met Arnav Singh Raizada for the first time.

The man that had turned her world upside down.

She had gone in and given the interview her best, being completely honest with all the questions and letting her beautiful personality and dedication to her career shine through.

ASR selected her on that very spot.

She had been elated when she heard that not only did she get the job but also an apartment provided by the company.

They had given her two days to move all of her things to her new apartment before she had to join work.

The first week had been a little tough for Khushi as she had to get used to her new work environment and more importantly, her khadoos, always-angry boss.

She had to acquaint herself with his preferences, whether that was in terms of work or in terms of simple things like making his daily coffee.

But she being Khushi Kumari Gupta had managed it all and within a week she knew almost everything about ASR's preferences, how the company worked, and what her role was as Arnav's PA.

The second week of work had been quite smooth - after all, she was then well acquainted with everything, and so she had no problems.

In those first two weeks, she had started developing a liking for Arnav. No, it wasn't love. But she saw things that other people didn't seem to see. She saw the way he always erupted like a volcano whenever anyone made a single, tiny mistake, but he also made sure that the truly hard-working employees were always well rewarded and taken care of. She saw that whenever someone wanted leave for a personal issue he would almost always refuse sternly, stating that they were just bluffing or that they were simply trying to find excuses to be lazy, but later he himself would solve the issue if it was any money issue or anything that he could solve himself. And she saw the way that whenever he did any kind of favor for his employees, he would never let them know that he was the one who solved their issue or gave them a reward.

Why other people couldn't see what she could - she didn't know. Maybe it was because she was his PA and therefore much closer to him? Again, she didn't know. But she did know that these small things made her realise that this khadoos boss of hers was good at heart despite his stern outer look. In fact, it would probably be more precise to say that he had a heart of gold.

Everything had been going well when one day, towards the end of her second week at AR Designs, she was in ASR's cabin, letting him know about his upcoming meetings next week and all the preparations that were needed to be done.

It had been a Friday, she recalled. It was around 5.30pm and most of the employees had already left home for the weekend and the office was practically empty. The only people remaining were ASR, Khushi, Aman, and two other employees who were also wrapping up their work ready to go home.

Khushi had just finished her overview of the next week when ASR spoke abruptly, "Be my girlfriend."

Khushi's head shot up to look at ASR who was now directly looking at her. He looked like he had just asked her to retrieve a file and not become his girlfriend.

"J-j-ji?" she stuttered, hoping against hopes that she had just misheard his words.

"I said, be my girlfriend Miss Gupta," he said, with the same confidence and arrogance as before.

Khushi stood there with her mouth agape for a good minute before she finally got her wits together and started speaking.

"Hum?! Or aapke girlfriend?! Hume laga ki sirf hum hi pagal hai. Do hafte hamare saath rehthe rehthe aap bhi pagal ho gaye kya? Matlab... Aap kahan or hum kahan? Aap THE ASR hain or hum bus Khushi Kumari Gupta... Aap hume apne girlfriend kyun banayenge?! Aapko tho voh bade bade models ya company CEOs se date karna chahiye na? (Me? And your girlfriend?! And here I thought I was the only crazy one. Have you become crazy too after spending two weeks with me? I mean... Where are you and where am I? You're THE ASR while I'm just Khushi Kumari Gupta... Why would you make me your girlfriend? You should be dating those big big models or company CEOs right?)" Khushi asked, scratching her head, genuinely confused.

"I like you," was all he said, making Khushi's eyes widen.

"Huh?" She was just completely speechless, hearing a compliment (well kind of) from The ASR. I mean, he just admitted that he LIKED her!!! She's never seen him praise anyone in these two weeks - not even a single person, scratch that, he hasn't said a single positive word to anyone!

Arnav thought for a moment before deciding that she deserved to know the full story before getting into this - not that he was going to give her a choice, but he just thought it's best for her to know what's expected of her and why.

"Okay listen carefully Khushi, because I'm only going to say this once." Khushi just got lost hearing her name from his mouth for the first time. It had always been Miss Gupta, and now hearing her name Khushi' from his mouth in that husky voice of his... Gosh it just did weird things in her stomach!

"My family is very keen on seeing me getting married to someone," he started, only to see Khushi opening her mouth to retort. But he put his hand up immediately, and said, "I'm not asking you to marry me - and I never would. I don't believe in crap like love nor marriage," making Khushi almost shudder inside, hearing that he doesn't believe in love!

"But my family is not like that and they just keep trying to find suitable girls for me and it's annoying as hell. I need a girl who will be my girlfriend in front of the family - it's not a contract or anything, I'm not that cheap to use a girl like that. The relationship will be real - you'll get all the benefits of being ASR's girlfriend: money, gifts, fame, everything. But you will need to interact with my family and convince them that you are perfect for me and rest I will handle so it never reaches the word marriage."

Seeing Khushi's innocent hazel eyes filled with confusion, ASR added on something that he hadn't quite planned on confessing, but now he felt as if it was important to say in this situation. "Before you think I'm telling you to basically act for me, let me just assure you that I hadn't really planned on getting a girl to do all this for me before... But I came to like you and this is just like hitting two mangoes with one stone," he finished.

"So are you up for this deal?" he asked.

"Deal?!" she exclaimed. How could he compare being his girlfriend to signing a deal?! Hey Devi Maiyya! This guy clearly had no idea about relationships! Where have you trapped me?!' she thought, before she voiced out a question that had been bugging her since the start of this ordeal.

"Why do you like me?" she asked.

"You have the weekend to decide your answer. On Monday, I want an answer from you first thing," he said, before striding out of his cabin, completely ignoring her question.

"Hawww," she gaped. "Laad governor kaheka. Yeh hume aise kaise chod kar jaa sakthe hai?! Aise hamaare sar par bomb phek kar! (Laad governor. How can he leave me like this?! After throwing a bomb on my head!)" she muttered angrily and then pouted. She looked up to the ceiling as she said, "Hey Devi Maiyya! Ab hum kya karein? (Devi Maiyya! Now what should I do?)" as she bit her lip worriedly.

*Flashback to be continued in the next update*

So guys how was it? What do you think Khushi said to Arnav's deal'? I'll give you a hint - hamaari Khushi toh pagal hai, toh voh kuch bhi jawaab the, kuch dhamaake daar karne ke baad hi dhegi nah? Toh socho ki voh aise kya kar sakthi hai! :D

Anyways do let me know how the update was with your likes/comments. This is a new story so I will only continue it if I get a good response for it...
