I dont believe that the TP is saying that rape only happen in India but rather that the frequency of it is more likely to occur in India because the men know they can get away with it. Furthemore, its not surprising that rape occurs more in India when you consider the fact that 17% of the worlds population is Indian. The bigger the population, the more the number of rapes would occur. China virtually has no rape statistics bc gatherining any sort of data in China is so hard. In addition, the censorship by Chinese govt does not allow the voices of rape victims in China to be heard. Although I dont understand the HIndu reference. I get the whole thing about worshipping goddess but still dont get it completely

My dear,

It is incredibly ugly and horrible, especially the Nirbhaya horror and now this latest about a 5 year old. It makes one sick to the pit of one's stomach.

But it is not confined to India, this kind of horror. It happens all over the place. In South Africa, the statistics say that one woman in three is raped at some point in her life, and Johannesburg is called the rape capital of the country. In a town in New Jersey 25 years ago, a crowd of men in a pub looked on and cheered while a young woman, who had made the mistake of coming there for a drink, was assaulted on a billiards table.

More recently, last year, in Steubenville, Ohio, a 16 year old girl was drugged at a party for the local football team, dragged from one place to another and violated in ways both natural and unnatural, and was left at the last place, after the horrors perpetrated on her had been recorded in an MMS and circulated, and some of the football team had relieved themselves on her inanimate form. There were many selfcongratulatory mails and tweets exchanged among the perpetrators.

Don't throw up yet, please, for the real horror is yet to come. This matter was completely hushed up for 4 months till a New York Times reporter saw one of the MMSes, launched an investigation and brought it all out, names included.

Now comes the kayo punch. The whole town rallied behind the rapists as they did not want their football team to be jailed. They declared that the victim had asked for it, and attacked the NYT journalist verbally and physically. You can see all this for yourself if you google Steubenville.

At least in India, after both these recent cases, there was a tremendous uproar that forced the Govt. to tighten the anti-rape laws immediately and make the punishments more stringent, plus activating fast track courts. No one said, like the good folks in Steubenville, that Nirbhaya had asked for it.

It will be the same with the latest, sickening case. As for desi men being sick, I would suggest that you look up some of the recent and very large child po*nography trials, including a mammoth one in France, which revealed parents selling their own children for child po*nography films. Then there are the snuff films.

There is no limit to human depravity, but it is not country specific. It is just that the Indian media are very vocal about such cases these days, and a very good thing too.

I can't believe this is happening in India, I hate it! Why are desi men so sick?
I can understand these things will happen sometimes, but this happens over and over again
And in India why? Hindus are made to respect goddesses but here they go and rape, not to mention a 5
Year old girl, are Indian men so sexually deprived that they rape their own sister and children? When will this madness stop?

Not, it seems, if she had been around in Steubenville, Ohio, last summer. Please see my post above.

This said, I can understand the surging rage you feel. I feel the same.

I choose not to edit my post because men around the world are not brought up the way they are brought up in India our so call "sanskars" are suppose to be superior we are taught to pray to goddess Laxmi and we are taught values from day one. This is a problem in India because we gave corruption everywhere and the menatliy of our people is in the gutter. Unfortunately I am of Indian decent and grew up in India, so when I'm ashamed I have no shame in speaking about it. My family was raised in India as well we are all very ashamed and I can really spark about India in a good light. Telling me that rape is a universal problem spray make things better for India it just creates an excuse. Lets face it my daughter is safer outside of India.

My dear Sakhile,

I could not agree more with you on this, especially wrt your last sentence.

Only one small point: Kashmir, is not a country, it is an integral part of India, nor is war going on there. There is terrorism sponsored and promoted from outside, necessitating a large force deployment. This was not so till the late 1980s ,till nearly 40 years after India became independent. when such sponsorship of terrorism began around that time, J&K was at peace with itself and with the rest of India. Yes, there were and still are, excesses by the state security forces, but these are publicised, probed and punished.

Well, as I run a serious risk of getting a warning for being very much off topic, I will stop here, but once again, I agree completely with the tone and content of your post.

Rape is a scourge on the world. India is one place where it is happening, but it is happening at alarming rates in other countries too. There's a form of rape that we do not talk about: state sponsored rape. This is the rape wof men women and children that happens during war. It is happening in every place on this earth where people are at war: Afghanistan, Iraq, Darfur, Syria, Palestine, Kashmir, Mogadishu, Somalia, Ethipoia, to name but a few countries.

It is also happening where people are fighting for resources, where the poor are troden upon and repeatedly raped physically, mentally and spiritually.
We, the world need to take a stand against all forms of rape, be it ethnic, sexist or otherwise.

Shyamala, thank you for the sobering input. There have been so many rape cases in the recent past involving people of all ages. In South Africa recently a four month old baby and a 94 year old grandmother were raped around the same period. This is sickening and the silence of governments deafening. We would have to keep speaking out against these and every other scourge for things to change.
