Very beautiful thread. Wishing everyone a very happy Raksha Bandhan.
In 1905, when the British colonial government, under Viceroy Lord Curzon, announced the partition of Bengal, it sparked widespread protests across the region. The partition was seen as an attempt to divide the Bengali population along religious lines - Hindus and Muslims - to weaken the unity of the Bengalee people and make it easier for the British to control them. Rabindranath Tagore, a prominent poet, writer, and social reformer, played a crucial role in opposing this partition. He sought to promote unity among the people of Bengal, transcending religious differences. As a part of this movement, Tagore invoked the spirit of Raksha Bandhan, a traditional Hindu festival symbolizing the bond between brothers and sisters, to foster a sense of solidarity and brotherhood among all communities, regardless of religion.
On Raksha Bandhan day, Tagore urged people to tie rakhis on each other's wrists, not just among siblings but also between Hindus and Muslims. This act was symbolic of their commitment to protect each other and to stand united against the divisive policies of the British Raj. The movement helped to temporarily curb the effects of the partition, although the partition itself was ultimately implemented. Tagore's use of Raksha Bandhan in this context elevated the festival from a personal, familial celebration to a symbol of communal harmony and resistance against colonial rule.
