For once ..I agree with this thought ...Do U need to be challenged to donate and then waste precious resources
I do not see the point here ...
There will be loads of ppl out there doing this for fun ...as every tom , dick and harry is up for so cld challenge ...
Today there were pics of tops CEO from companies like Yahoo , twitter , Microsoft take the challenge..Me not impressed

I agree whole heartedly with you. BUT there is a point to the challenge. A point everyone is missing completely, and has turned this into a 'fun fad.' ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ) is a serious motor neuron disorder. The effect leaves you numb, you slowly begin paralysis. This is what Stephen Hawking actually suffers from.

The point of the challenge is that, when the cold water (ice) hits your body, you temporarily become numb. You feel the effect of paralysis-just like ALS. But while you are fortunate enough to recover, those suffering from ALS don't. The point of the challenge is to shock you, but alas that shock factor has been buried somewhere deep among the plethora of people taking up the challenge for the sake of it-at lest I say because it's the new cool thing to do-a shame I know.

If you guys haven't seen this video, I suggest you do: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/20/anthony-carbajal-ice-bucket-challenge-als_n_5696085.html?&ncid=tweetlnkushpmg00000067

It really moves you.

But yes I completely agree with you. Wasting water is not cool. The whole point of this bucket challenge is to donate and raise awareness so please do that folks :)

ALS...Making realise and aware abt ALS ..is a good thought ..But there has to be a better way to get the money and spread awareness ...
Ask them to hold a piece of ice in their mouths till it melts without moving ...it can give u the similar effect ...use less water ...

Agree with Mishal... Pri... and similar thoughts here... you don't need to recreate the pain to do some charity work... all you need is heart... if you have heart... you will yourself feel the pain... We need to preserve the resources... Is it really necessary to waste something so precious to create awareness... Ok I might question organizers how will you recreate something for AIDS, Cancer and many others????

But that was my point.

What started of as a clever tactic to get people talking-and regardless of varying opinions, the one thing everyone can agree on is that it got people talking, it did it's job: bluntly put to raise awareness about ALS.

Having that however, that has somewhat been lost in what is now seen as the 'new cool thing to do'. The whole ice bucket challenge has lost it's meaning.

I don't condone wasting water.

Being privileged enough to have it at my disposal I cannot condone it, not even for a good cause. But all I was pointing out was that the initial idea was to recreate the pain/paralysis that people with ALS undergo. Throwing a bucket of ice over yourself did that. But I don't agree with where the whole concept is now. Part of me cannot help but feel that majority of the people now doing this challenge have no idea what the whole challenge was about.

That is a shame. A real shame.

As to the other causes and raising awareness. I know that here in England, Macmillan cancer research host 'coffee mornings' in September to get people talking/supporting one another who have members who are cancer victims. Basically the idea is to bake and invite people over to eat and drink the cake and coffee and discuss the cancer and during that donate whatever they can. Similarly for breast cancer there are numerous charity races set up. Then of course there are the various coloured bands you can buy to support a cause (pink ribbon is associated with breast cancer)

Possibly the same idea could be extended to ALS instead of wasting water, which is now the case. ALS which a lot of people didn't know about-myself included-is now been brought o light. S it is quite possible to set up simpler, less commodity wasting tactics to keep the awareness alive

In regards to the whole ice bucket challenge what began as awareness has now become a fad. Unfortunately.
