Chapter 83
While there was a mexican standoff going on in the back patio, Prem wandered around the house looking for Heer. Harshiti girls were practising, music playing, which gave the wedding house a nice atmosphere.
Other assorted aunties kept staring at Prem. There were a few tsk tsks as people remarked that they had never seen a wedding where the groom was part of the bride's household before the wedding, walking around khullam khulla without a care. Daljeet had given up trying to control anything that happened in the place.
Finally Prem found Heer checking her hair in the mirror in the ahem room.
She saw him in the mirror and turned, "Prem, at least today you have to make an effort to play the groom and stay away."
"Then what was that look you gave me this morning?" Prem was walking deliberately towards her.
"Prem! Behave!"
"No! Nahin! Nah!"
Heer for a minute wanted to shout for Gabbar, who would have come in a flash to protect Heer. But calling the dogs on the man you were about to marry was a bit harsh. Where were all her two-legged bodyguards? The nalayaks had been in the way all this while and now when they really needed to step in they were turning a blind eye. Where was FARI??
Heer backed away looking around for a way out. In a flash Prem was an inch away from her and now there was no escape. She tried one last time, "I've just spent 2 hours getting this hair done."
Prem reached out and by some otherworldly intuition knew exactly which pin to extract so that her hair came tumbling down. He held the nape of her neck, "Heer" he breathed, and Heer gave up.
She was trying to remember when they had last kissed, it seemed like a century ago. But still this kiss was like nothing else. She didn't know who was more desperate, Prem or her. He tasted particularly delicious today, like strawberry jam, had he had jam for breakfast? No that's not what she had brought him on a tray. Oh what? He's stopping? No! Heer pulled him back for another taste.
Anu had finished Daljeet's hair and wanted to check on the bride's hair. She went to the ahem room and stopped herself from walking in just in time.
Prem drew back, framing Heer's face in his hands, he was never lost for words, this was the first time. So Heer helped him out, " I have plans for you. Just a few more hours and I'm going to have my way with you." She couldn't lift her eyes any higher than his lips . Her lids were heavy. Drugged.
Fari was looking for Anu and found her standing outside the room and was about to yell when Anu motioned for her to shush. Fari caught up and looked at the scene. Fari and Anu looked at each other not knowing what to do . Fari, in a complete change of style, knocked politely on the open door. No response. Louder!
Prem heard before Heer and with one last gentle kiss he turned his face towards the door and looked helpless and innocent while Heer whispered things in his ear.
"Ok ok, now enough! Heeriye, your hair is a mess!" Fari tried to be all business-like as she walked in.
Heer's love haze was taking a while to lift. Her hand still against Prem's cheek, trying to get him to turn back. She was finally aware of Fari. Prem held her close and tightened his hold as she tried to move away. He looked at Fari with a satisfied grin. Heer dropped her hand from his face and tried to look composed knowing that she must look the complete opposite.
Fari came and stood in front of them, arms folded,
"Heeriye, hair needs to be done again."
Heer gave a slight nod, not daring to look at Fari. Prem let her go and she stepped away.
"And you mister, you come with me." Fari got Prem by the ear and dragged him out of the ahem room.
