"You're looking very beautiful, Kasturi'"
"Thank you, Robbie sir."
"And me..."
"Why, are you fishing for compliments?"
"From you, it's my right."
"Then listen. You're looking very handsome."
"Just handsome? Well, at least I got one compliment. And what about my shirt?"
"That's very nice too, Robbie sir. The colour suits you."
"But isn't it a bit open? I'll close all the buttons."
"No, no, it's nice like that."
"Oh, it's nice?"
"Sir, you'I'just'" she protested, her face reddening.
"Its OK, Kasturi. I was only joking. Come on. It'll take another three hours to reach Mumbai."
***
"Kasturi,
"Hmmm'"
"Anyways, I really liked what you said about the buttons'"
"Sir'" she groaned. "You're again teasing'"
"OK, OK, I wont mention it. We're here. Let's go in."
***
"Robbie! You took so long. The guests are about to arrive. Come, come, quick, go see Kiran about'" Devika ordered, bustling Robbie into the hall.
Kasturi was left standing alone in the hallway, feeling wretchedly out of place. And without Robbie's dazzling smile and sweet conversation, her mind wandered back to Raunak. She hadn't meant to hurt him. But nor could she have given up her chance to escape. And in honesty, she wasn't brave enough to have stayed behind. But what were the consequences of her hasty decision'would her past always overshadow her future?
Someone grabbed her hand, pulling her into a doorway. A hand covered her eyes.
"Recognise me?"
"Robbie sir! You scared me'"
"Sorry Kasturi. But what thoughts were you lost in?"
"I'that'"
"Anyways, I'm sorry. I left you along for so long'"
"Its OK, Robbie sir'you had work'"
"And perhaps even during the party I won't be able to spend enough time with you'"
"What are you saying, sir? I understand. And you should also spend time with your friends. Don't worry."
"Oh yeah, friends. Come, I'll introduce you to my friends. Come."
"This is Preet Juneja. Number 1 mischief-maker. This is Milind Mishra. Milind, I can't see Prachi...?"
"She'll be with Neev and Ayesha. Hi, Kasturi."
"Greetings."
"And everyone else ' Shabd, Amar, Ranvir, Shaurya'" Robbie continued, pointing each out in turn.
"OK Robbie, I have to say, your Kasturi is indeed very pretty."
"Won't you sing a song for her?"
"No Robbie sir, there's no nee...." Robbie grinned at her and bounced onstage.
"Excuse me, everyone, I'd like to say a few words. Today's my birthday. But the best day of this year was the day I met Kasturi. Along with my life, she completely changed me too." Devika bristled as he praised Kasturi. Her outrage intensified when he finished his speech without a single mention of her own name.
"I know, when I praise her, she feels shy. But I want to tell her every moment how dear she is to me. I love you, Kasturi." A smile lit Kasturi's face.
"Chaand sitare, phool aur khushboo
Yeh to saare purane hain
Taaza taaza kali khili hai Hum uske deewane hainChaand sitare, phool aur khushboo
Yeh to saare purane hain
Taaza taaza kali khili hai Hum uske deewane hain""Now Robbie and Kasturi will have a romantic dance together," decided Preet.
"Yeh, mein'"
"No, no, Kasturi ma'am, not allowed."
"Chalo, Kasturi, for me," Robbie pleaded. She shook her head in acceptance and allowed him to lead her into the floor. A slow, romantic track began to play.
"Sholon si, sholon si
Tere aankhon ki yeh roshni
Kiske liye hai kiske liye hai
Chandni chandni
Tere chehre ki yeh chandni
Kiske liye hai kiske liye hai
Tera muskurana nazar yun jhukana
Mere liye hai bas mere liye hai"
The others clapped as he spun and twirled her around the dancefloor, then swept her into his hold as they slowed down and improvised a waltz.
"Yeh meri adayein, yeh meri wafayeinTujhko pata hai sabh tere liye hai
Sholon si, sholon si
Meri aankhon ki yeh roshni
Tere liye hai tere liye hai"
"OK, now everyone on the dancefloor. Swap partners'"
Kasturi raised her eyebrows as a flock of girls streamed over to Robbie.
"Uff is someone jealous?" someone whispered in her ear.
She whirled round to find Preet with a quizzical look on his face. "Of course not," she assured him.
"So will you dance with me?"
"Of course."
"Haske dikha do deewane koJo ho raha hai ho jaane do
Dil ke uljhan zubaan pe
Aati hai to aa bhi jaane do"
The lights dimmed. "Now everone's going to dance with someone they can't see. Try and recognize them."
"Yeh hoton ki narmi yeh sanson ki garmiMere liye hai bas mere liye hai"
Kasturi gasped as an arm snaked around her and pulled her towards someone. Her heartbeat began to race and she instantly began to struggle.
"mere liye hai bas mere liye hai"
"Raunak'" she breathed. "Let me go'"
"mere liye hai bas mere liye hai"
"I've come to tell everyone the truth about you'Kasturi Singhania'"
He released her suddenly as the lights snapped on. She looked around in consternation, but she could see him nowhere. He had melted away as quickly as he had come. But he had achieved his aim ' she was terrified. Her heart continued to gallop inside her, her breaths were short and sharp.
"Kasturi! Are you okay?" Robbie's face was creased in concern.
"I..that..I'"
"Why are you so scared? Are you afraid of the dark?"
"No, it's nothing." She searched wildly for another subject. "Did you have fun, danging with all those butterflies?"
"Why? Is my Kasturi jealous? Good. A little bit of jealousy is a good thing."
"Robbie sir, you're using my own words"
"OK, OK, sorry. Now come. Mom's calling us on stage." She followed him to where Devika was beckoning.
"There's yet another reason to celebrate. Today I'll tell everyone that my son is getting engaged with, Kasturi Singhania."
Kasturi held her breath. Had anyone noticed? Devika returned her look of panic with a malicious smirk.
Robbie quickly stepped in. "Mom, not Kasturi Singhania, Kasturi Chawla." Kasturi choked out her breath as Devika made no further claims.
"Oh sorry, Kasturi, I made a mistake." Kasturi choked out her breath as Devika made no further claims. "Robbie Sabharwal and Kasturi Chawla'"
"One minute!"
