After a five-month legal battle, Star Movies is back on air, having re-certified their films as 'U' or 'U/A' by CBFC. Television stars talk about their favourite English channel and movie
HBO and Star Movies are my all-time favourite English movie channels. Both have been showing good films. If there's nothing interesting on one particular channel, then I switch over to the other.

I'm happy Star Movies is back on air. My all-time favourite English film has to be A Beautiful Mind. I wish, I had more time to see movies. HITEN TEJWANI

Urvashi Dholakia's Bhojpuri dreams

Urvashi Dholakia shot to instant fame as the conniving vamp Komolika in Balaji's Kasauti Zindagi Kay. The credit for making the vamp the most talked about character in soaps can be largely attributed to her performance in Kasauti. Her subtle and nuanced negative role in Sony's Rishton Ki Dor (where she plays Noinika), furthered the trend. Now, the favourite vamp of the small screen will be seen in a new role, that of a producer.

The actor is producing a regional film Saas Rani Bahu Naukrani with Bhojpuri stalwarts like Ravi Kissen, Vijay Khera, Brij Bhushan and Sahila Chaddha. When we spoke to the actor about the new venture, she said, "I decided to turn to production as I have been in the industry for a long time now. There is always a stage in an actor's life when he/she wants to experiment with new roles. So, I thought about donning the role of a producer along with my mom." A natural question pops in our mind, why did she chose to do a Bhojpuri film instead of a mainstream one, to which Urvashi adds, "My idea is to entertain the masses. I think Bhojpuri has a vast audience and a fim in that language should be a profitable bet. Moreover, with the pioneers of Bhojpuri cinema on your side, the interest factor is always at its highest."

Bhojpuri films have earlier caught the fancy of many renowned producers of our small screen. The Queen of soaps, Ektaa Kapoor is one amongst them. Since Urvashi has had a long association with Ektaa, did she benefit from her creative inputs? Adds the favourite vamp of the small screen, "It didn't really happen, but I have a great regard for her creative inputs. I would love to discuss such things with her."

With the track in Kasauti taking a back seat at the moment, her Sony show is not a great story either. What needs to be watched is how the popular vamp of the small screen turns out as a producer. Since the film is still in its post-production stage, it will be couple of months before we know a sure shot answer on that. Till then over to you Noinika.

Top 10 TV Actress and their Sun Signs

Indya.com finds out the sun signs of your favourite TV stars and how their characteristics match up to their on- screen counter parts

Capricorn
Saakshi Tanwar (January 12th) plays Parvati in Kahani Ghar Ghar Kii
Parvati's character possesses all the traits of a true Capricorn. She is emotional and believes in the truth. She is very responsible towards her work just like Capricorns who are said to be one of the most stable signs of the zodiac. Parvati is protective of her children, extremely loyal to her husband and is the ideal bahu of the Aggrawal family. She also shows that she is persistent, shrewd and ruthless in accomplishing her goals just like her off-screen star trait. After all she waited for 18 years to take revenge on Trishana Agrawal!

Shewta Tiwari (1st January) plays Prerna Bajaj in Kasauti Zindigi Kay
Capricorns are independent, rocklike characters much like Prerna Bajaj. They are said to be confident, strong willed and very serious and you'd have to be if you went against your own family to hand in your son-in-law to the police on charges of rape.

Aries
Smriti Irani (March 23rd) plays Tulsi Virani in Kyunki…
Arians make good friends as they look out for others and would fight to protect them should the need arise. This is exactly what Tulsi keeps doing; minding everyone else's problems. But far from being a busy body, this supreme bahu strives to do what is right even if it means killing off her own son! Tulsi popped off Ansh to protect her wife from his abuse. You couldn't find a better mother-in-law than that.
One Arian characteristic this traditional woman does not possessive however is short temperedness. She is calm in the most chaotic situations unlike her off screen zodiac trait.

Cancer
Amna Shariff (16th July) plays Kashish in Kahin To Hoga
Cancerians are closed off emotionally and physically from the world. It is like they are in a shell much like their zodiac symbol, the crab. They have a difficult time trusting people and it makes them regard life negatively, thinking it is too hard and miserable. This is exactly the opposite of what we see in Amna Shariff's character Kashish. Kashish's life has been one bumpy ride but she instead of wallowing in self pity she is very acceptant of the challenges in her life. Cancerians are said to live in the past but young Kashish has been married over four times! Surely it takes maturity to let things go to hop from one marriage to another.

Virgo
Prachi Desai (12th September) plays Bani Walia in Kasam Se
It is said that when a Virgo is offended or hurt, they may never show it. Poor Bani however wasn't putting on show to mask her distress when she found out that her own sister was sleeping with her husband. Virgos are observant and analytical. It's safe to say that when you don't notice your husband sneaking around right under your nose with your sister your powers of observation are definitely lacking.

Rajshree Thakur (22nd September) plays Saloni in Saat Phere
Virgos are capable of being independent but those who are less out going need someone to support them to achieve more which rings true for Saloni whose husband's love enabled her to fulfill her dreams of becoming a singer.
All Virgos are reliable just like Saloni who is the most reliable bahu of her family. They are also said to be inflexible which also rings true to Saloni who had very firm views and beliefs. When a Virgo is hurt by someone she will not show her true feelings and this is exactly how Saloni behaves.
On the other hand Virgos are known to be skeptical. Saloni however is extremely optimistic and believes that everything will work out in the end.

Gauri Pradhan (16th September) plays Nandini in Kyunki…
A Virgo is ambitious and strives to always know more trying to bring order to chaos. Nandini Virani's character is close to this. She is a journalist who is passionately aggressive about her work. She was determined to interview Don Ansh Gujral and it was this attitude that impressed him. Other than that Nandini is anything but a Virgo. For a sign which is known to be observant and analytical, Nandini proceeded to enter a loveless marriage through manipulation with the Don and was raped by her own husband.

Sagittarius
Juhi Parmar (14th December) plays Kumkum in Kumkum
Sagittarians are said to be unemotional and ambitious people who do not worry too much about sentiments and feelings. This is the opposite of the typical housewife we usually see on TV and Kumkum is just like any other bahu. She is extremely attached to her family and is the ideal symbol of a mother and home maker. She lacks the Sagittarian's thirst to explore. Instead she thinks the world is a simple place that she is resigned to live in.
Even when Antara, her vampish daughter-in-law, constantly abuses her Kumkum remains non-confrontational, a trait that is definitely not associated with Sagittarians.

Scorpio
Shewta Salve (17th November) plays psychiatrist Dr. Ritu in Left Right Left
They don't call them sexy Scorpios for nothing. Dr. Ritu certainly has the looks to play the part of a temptress but her attitude is seriously lacking the Scorpio traits. Scorpios are the most passionate and sensually energetic of all the signs but Ritu can't even gather up the courage to express her feelings to Captain Rajveer (Rajiv Khandelwal) whom she is in love with.

Libra
Rakshanda Khan (27th September) plays Tanya in Kyunki…
Libra is very insecure, they suffer from a lack of self confidence, they are always searching for something to complete them hence they are unsure of themselves.
A negative Libran character may show frivolity, flirtatiousness and shallowness much like Tanya's negative character. While she was a friend of Ansh Gujral she was responsible for generating confusion between lovers Nandini and Karan. She later fell in love with Karan. However when she turned good Tanya helps Nandini and Karan get together sacrificing her own love. Could this prove that Libras don't really know who they are inside or maybe it's the script writer whose can't decide between Tanya being good or evil.

    Vedic wedding for Tina

Parakh will have a simple ceremony in Bangalore in the presence of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.

Tina Parakh is a devoted follower of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, so it wasn't a surprise when the actress decided to get married under his watchful eye in Bangalore today. A private affair, the wedding will be carried out according to the Vedic rituals.
Says Tina, "I've always thought of marriage as a very simple ritual. I never imagined myself sitting in a mandap with tonnes of make-up and loaded with jewellery. I could not have asked for a better wedding than in the presence of Guruji."
    Time constraints
Tina will be wearing a simple red sari, and her fianc Vikram Hazra will also be dressed in traditional wear. "We have a mahurat of 8 am, and the people in the Ashram are very strict about timing. It will go on for two hours with Vedic chants, shlokas and me taking the pheras. It's going to be an amazing experience."
Apart from her Kasautii gang including Manoj Bohra and Shweta Tiwari, Tina has also invited friends from the sets of Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. "I am happy that my friends will make it. I have been shooting till the last minute and running around distributing cards."
    No plans
The idea of getting married still hasn't sunk in for Tina. "I can't believe I am getting married. I keep telling Vikram we are going to wake up the next day and realise we are finally married!" she says.
After staying in Bangalore for a day, Tina will return to Mumbai for a reception on February 16. "That's for all my friends who couldn't make it for the wedding."
Has she thought about where she will go for the honeymoon ? "Not yet. I am just so occupied with the marriage, that I have no time to think about anything else!"

Are Roy brothers the best dressed on TV?

That's what designer Narendra Kumar Ahmed, who's making his foray in television, thinks

    HARSHADA REGE

When fashion designer Narendra Kumar Ahmed was asked who he thinks are the better dressed people on the small screen. he says, "Rohit and Ronit Roy are among the well dressed people on TV. I think even Rajeev Khandelwal is quite well dressed. I think more and more TV actors are becoming conscious about the way they dress up." The designer who will be designing Annu Kapoor's clothes for Antakshari. But he is in no hurry to dress up other actors on TV. "One shouldn't bite more than one can chew," says Narendra. So, what made him take up this assignment? "TV is huge these days. I don't make any distinction between films and TV, that's why I agreed to take this challenge," he says. Ahmed's clothes will be different from those seen on TV right now. "The clothes will be not be outlandish to draw attention. Instead
they will be very elegant and stylish and that will draw people's attention," says Narendra.

    TV: Entertainment ka big boss?
    SHAMBHU SAHU
    [ 9 Feb, 2007 0333hrs ISTTIMES NEWS NETWORK ]

Small is big and nothing proves it better than Big Indian TV mania.

With big names from celebdom endorsing the small screen, the idiot's tag seems to have been finally taken off the 'box'. After all, TV has helped stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Shilpa Shetty and Rahul Aashiqui Roy to get back their lost glory. It has also offered bread 'n' butter to one-film-wonders like Ronit Roy (Jaan Tere Naam), Iqbal Khan (Fun2ssh), Gaurav Channa (Wo Tera Naam Tha), Rakesh Bapat (Tum Bin) and Vikas Bhalla (Salaami).

    Reviving lost glory
Shilpa Shetty is the best example of how television today is creating international stars. Her win in UK's reality show Celebrity Big Brother has brought her more recognition worldwide than she would have got as a Bollywood actor. Rumour mills have been working overtime securing her offers from Hollywood and UK's TV channels. That she didn't get a single international offer despite critical acclaim for her performances in films like Dhadkan and Phir Milenge is another matter altogether.

Ditto for Rahul Roy. The long forgotten Aashiqui hero's career has been resurrected – Phoenix like – with his victory in Bigg Boss and he has received over 10 film offers. So is he as popular today as he was after Aashiqui? "More," says Rahul confidently and adds why, "Now people also know me as a person. I am no longer just a star for them."

    Bitten by the TV bug
The list of those who have moved from the big screen to small screen goes on ad infinitum and includes filmmakers, singers, musicians and of course, actors.

But is persuading stars to do a show on telly quite a task? "Yes, but if you don't ask, you'll never know if it's a 'Yes' or 'No'!" quips Star TV head honcho Sameer Nair, who's responsible for getting Big B and SRK to host KBC. "We took Mr Bachchan to the sets of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire in London to make him understand the show. And he agreed to do the Indian version. Similarly Mr Khan has seen KBC 1 and 2 and since he comes from TV, he realises the power of the medium," he adds.

    Show me the money
What has put T0V in the hot seat are the big bucks. As director Kundan Shah (of Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro and Kya Kehna fame), who has worked on both the small and big screen says: "Stars take up TV assignments as they are being paid phenomenal amounts." But he adds that the TV-shining phase lacks substance as it is merely trying to emulate the look of Yash Chopra and Karan Johar films. "Cinema standards are poor and TV content poorer," he says.

Is TV the new star maker?
However, the power of TV isn't simply derived from cine stars choosing the small screen to make a big impact. Television has been making careers before and examples are aplenty: Sunidhi Chauhan, Kunal Ganjawala, Shah Rukh Khan, Shreya Ghosal and Sonu Nigam shot to fame after their stint on TV. Ektaa Kapoor is better known for her family soaps than the films she has produced.

Actors like Cezzane 'Anurag' Khan, Shweta 'Prerna' Tiwari, Smriti 'Tulsi' Irani and Ronit 'Rishabh Bajaj' Roy have as big a fan following as any film star. "TV has always mentored artistes and stars. It's only more aggressive now.

Television is no longer the poor cousin of cinema. It's more real and gives instant popularity, while films take time to pick up." avers Shekhar Suman, who starred in films like Utsav and Anubhav, but accepts that his real fame came from TV. "Initially, I faced a lot of flak for joining TV. People said here's somebody who has joined the industry after failing in movies. But today, I feel vindicated, victorious. The fact remains that an actor just needs a good platform to perform," he quips.

And TV is the best platform these days. Says Siddharth Basu, producer of KBC, "The increase in the reach of TV has been massive in the last six years, and next only to the telecom revolution in the country. It today reaches out to 85-90 million households."

    Silver screen Vs small screen
So do we see a competition between the two widely popular mediums of entertainments? "Yes, why else would SRK host a show on TV?" opines Suman. However, Rahul Roy terms it as healthy competition. "Cinema will always remain attractive. On the business front, TV can be competition for films, but not in terms of content." Agrees Nair: "Of course, a film star will be the bigger star than any TV superstar. But yes, opportunities have increased tremendously."
