Red Sari Under the Mistletoe – Christmas Shopping
Koi mil gaya
Koi mil gaya
Koi mil gaya
Mujhko kya hua hai
Kyon main kho gaya hoon
Paagal tha main pehle
Ya ab ho gaya hoon
Behki hai nigahein
Aur bikhre hain baal
Tumne banaya hai
Kya apna ye haal
Koi mil gaya
Koi mil gaya
Mera dil gaya
Kya bataoon yaaron
"Pushkar what are doing later on tonight?" Bani asked him.
"Nothing much. Watch some TV, have a beer and just chill." Pushkar said lazily.
"Well then you are coming shopping with me, remember we have to get gifts for Pia, Cherry and AD. I am sure you have to buy gifts for others too."
Pushkar sat up straight and almost shouted, "No way…am not coming shopping with you. I still remember last year. We went each and every shop in the mall and after six hours you managed to find one gift to buy. I think you should tag along one of your girlfriends. What's that girl, the one that is your assistant, Tanu. I think she would be happy to go with you. She is always hyper and ready for anything." Pushkar crossed his fingers and prayed silently that Bani wouldn't push it. No way he wanted to traipse the malls at this crazy time of the year. People went nuts buying stupid gifts that would stay in boxes or be exchanged after they received it. He had his solution planned out this year, he was going into one shop and buy those gift cards that had come out this year. Yep people are always happy with dough.
Bani grumled, "Fine! And next time don't ask me to help you." And with that she slammed the phone down. She twisted her hair and looked at Tannu happily keying away at her desk. No, it was bad enough looking at her grinning face all day, she couldn't handle that smile while was stressed out with the gift buying.
When Tannu had finished the report she bounced over to Bani's office and said chirpily, "Oh gosh Bani, you are showing crows feet on your face, stop screwing up your face so much. What's the matter? Boss is upset with you?"
Bani glared at her without meaning too, "Oh stop it Tannu…you know AD is not upset with me, just thinking what to get Pia and AD for Christmas."
Tannu lips curved into a huge grin, "Simple just ask Pia what she would like. I am sure Ms Pia has a long list of things she wants even though she probably has dozens of the same thing lying around her house."
Is she gone mad? Bani thought looking at Tannu grinning away. But she wasn't wrong about Pia always wanting multiples of the same things. She remembered one year when she, Pushkar and Cherry had given her same brand of t-shirt, in the same colour and Pia had been overjoyed with the presents.
This year it was even more difficult to buy gifts for them as they were now engaged. And anyway what do you buy a guy who had everything. His huge mansion was filled with expensive artworks, furniture, crystals and everything that one could think off.
After work Bani headed for Bungalow 8, this was one of the store she liked browsing through. She loved the hammered copper wares and some unique pottery pieces in earthy tones. It wasn't busy when Bani went in and she went to the second floor as she liked to start there and work her way down. The items displayed on the shelves with the strategic lighting highlighting the display. Bani was admiring an intricately pattern coloured glass bowl, when a voice said, "Aha, the lady in the red sari."
Bani looked around to see Jai Walia standing with his arms behind his back, his eyebrow raised and a quirky smile on his face. Bani flushed slightly as she remembered their last rendezvous. Not wishing to be rude she asked, "How are you Mr Walia?"
"I am very well..indeed very well, Ms Dixit."
The use of her last name caused her to look at him again. "So are you shopping for a gift too?" Bani asked, trying to dispel the uncomfortable feeling he aroused.
"Yes. With Christmas around the corner, I have to resort to the most unpleasant task of purchasing gifts for people who don't really have a need for it." He walked over and peered at the glass bowl which Bani had been looking at earlier.
"It's rather nice piece, but what would you do with except for sticking it in a display unit," Jai commented.
Bani couldn't help but laugh softly and say, "Well I guess it is really more a decorative piece than a functional houseware."
Jai turned around and asked, "Do you like the bowl?"
"Yes it is nice, but not what I am looking for?"
Jai angled a look at her and said, "And what exactly is Ms Dixit looking for?"
Bani brushed her hair back, "I don't know! I have to buy couple of gifts and this happens to be one of my favourite store."
Jai now stood up and stared down at her, "What a coincidence! This happens to be my favourite store too. May be we can help each other out."
The thought of browsing the store with him filled Bani with dread. He already unbalanced her with his lethal looks and his charming manner, plus she hadn't really been able to get his last kiss out of her mind. It plagued her when ever she thought of him.
He followed her as she looked at some more items, now and then asking her opinion on some objects that took his fancy.
Bani eventually found a ceramic piece she liked and had the sales girl put it on the side for her. They went downstairs where there lot of the pieces in crystal and fine bone china. After having a look around, Jai said to her exasperatedly, "I can decide on anything what do you think? Do you like anything here?'
Bani gave him a quizzical look, "Do you think you can tell me who you want to buy the gift for? It would help if you describe the kind of person he/she is."
"Oh you know her, its Pia."
"Well she is hard to shop for. But why don't you get different piece from the ceramic range that I selected. I think she will like to have couple of pieces that she can display together."
Jai scratching his head, "I guess it's not a bad idea." Then grabbing her arm and almost pulling her along he strode up the stairs. He picked out a piece that appealed to him and also picked up the glass bowl Bani had taken a fancy too and gave it to the sales girl. After paying for their purchases, he asked, "Are you hungry? I am famished, missed lunch due to meeting going overtime. There is nice place nearby where we could grab a dinner."
Bani said hesitantly, "Well I am a bit puckish, but I was thinking of getting home before it gets dark."
Jai took her arm and the bags, winked at here, "Well come and have something to eat with me first and then I will safely drop you off home."
The small restaurant was cosy and not too crowded. The manager seemed to know Jai and showed them immediately to a table, soon followed by the waiter. Jai ordered food without looking at the menu, asking the waiter to bring juice for both of them while they waited for the food. The food arrived piping hot and Bani noted it was all vegetarian. They ate the food while Jai talked casually about himself and prodding her with questions, which Bani answered reluctantly. For desert he ordered chocolate ice-cream which he enjoyed with childish abandonment while Bani picked at her daintily. She looked at him licking his spoon clean and smiled to herself as she had never met a guy yet who gorged on ice-cream like Jai.
Jai caught her smile and asked, "Care to share your thought with me?"
Bani laughed softly and said, "I not met a guy yet who loves chocolate ice-cream the way you do."
"Why what's wrong with me liking chocolate ice-cream?"
"Did you know that you licked your spoon clean." Bani picked up his spoon held it up for him to see.
Jai's grinned at her "Well it's not every day that I get to enjoy my favourite ice-cream in company of a pretty lady."
Bani blushed and pushing her ice-cream at him, "Do you want to finish off mine? I don't want any more."
Jai grabbed her dish and put a spoonful in his mouth before saying, "Can't say no to my favourite dessert."
Jai and Bani left the restaurant soon and Jai drove her to her apartment where he got out and walked her to the door of the building. Handing over her bags, he took her hand and said, "Thank you for shopping with me and the dinner. I hope we can do this again." He pressed a gentle kiss on the back of her hand before letting go.
He left Bani staring at him through the glass doors of the building as he drove away…
