Fantastic update! Loved loved loved it! The last line especially has my heart ❤️
Do tag me next time you update :)
Thank you for the tag!❤️
Your story update has been the day's saviour! After all that Idiot of the year done in the show, your Anu made up for it. You're a darling, literally.
I'll be honest, like your name, you managed to bloom me away to an alternate universe with your beautiful writing.
I love how, not only AnuGun, but you also portrayed the growing dynamics between GG and the Kulshreshths. In all honesty, my eyes teared reading how loved and overwhelmed GG felt. You wrote both leads so well, I don't think anyone would've ever thought the complexities in their mind as perfect as you did.
Each and every word of yours teleported me to their world and I'm glad to have an incredibly talented writer like you with us!
Uff! This is exactly what I thought of, and how I've wanted things to unfold between them. And that hug!! The feels you gave out- way better than what the show will probably how. I LOVED IT!
And of course, extra thanks and hugs for the super long chapter!!
Dil le lo for this, Author Sahiba.
Can't wait for the next chapter.😳

Sorry if you feel it's a load of waffle. I don't even know how I managed to type a chapter this long! As always, feedback is always appreciated. ❤️
CHAPTER 2
Kulshreshth’s House
“Musical Aunty!!! Kaise ho?”
“Main teek hoon. Tum sunao mere bache?”
“Ab aap se milne ay hoon toh bilkul teek hoon. Pehle aap ko dekh liya uss Chant Chashmish ko nai toh mujhe kuch kaise ho sakta hai.”
Anubhav who had just returned from work only wanted an evening of peace before all the drama that was to start from tomorrow, but where Papa Ki Pari was where was he to expect this. “Dekho iss pagal ko, mere ghar mein akar meri buraye kar rahe hai. Aur main ek chance ke baare mein soch raha tha, kuch nai hosakta iska” thought Anubhav.
“Bas tumhe bahana chahiye ladne ke liye maine toh tumhe kuch kaha bhi nai hai ab” spoke Anu entering the house.
“Yeh tum keh rahe ho! Aur tum joh har baat par mein mere graduate na hone mein taunt dete ho uska kya? Itne baar toh Papa ne bhi nai sunaye jitne baar tum suna chuke ho.” Gungun spoke, with Deja Vu hitting her.
“Toh bolo thank you.” Realisation hitting Anubhav too. Their next act surprised themselves too. Their laughter echoed the Kulshreshta’s house, this was their usual banter, but today, it felt personal, a moment re-enacted that was just between them.
“Arre tum duno has kyun rahe ho?” Spoke a surprised Sargam. “Bade ajeeb ho! Abhi ek second pehle toh lad rahe te aur ab has rahe ho.”
This had bought the duo back from their moment. “Woh Aunty actually…”
“Kuch nai Maa. Bas aise. Acha mujhe bhook lag rahe hai kuch khaane keliye de do.” Anubhav spoke in hope of diverting the topic.
“Han mera bacha main kuch deti hoon tum fresh hojao tab tak. Gungun, tum bhi humare saath khaana Aur fikar mat karo main tumhe apne haathon se khiladongi.”
“Ok Aunty. Aapne itne pyaar se kaha toh I’ll stay.” She wanted answers though, this was the second time where he’s diverted their topic from his family. Even when he came to visit her he avoided informing his family. So being the child she is followed him upstairs whilst Aunty went to cook.
“Mera peecha kyun kar rahe ho?” Spoke a frustrated Anubhav.
“Arre kon kehta hai main tumhe follow kar rahe hoon. Tumhare sar ke peeche bhi ankhein hai joh keh rahe hai yeh ladki tumhe follow kar rahe kya?”
“Seedhe baat karne nai ati tumhe kya? Agar tum dekh sakte ho toh tum mere peeche peeche mere room mein agaye ho!”
Realisation hit Gungun, she had been caught as her eyes now explored his spacious room. “Haan toh? Kuch din hai bas, phir main yehi shift hongi, toh yeh mera room bana! Main jab chahiye yahan asakti hoon tumhe kya?”
“Mujhe kya!? Arre yeh tumhara kamra baad mein hoga na? Shaadi huwi nai hai joh tum aise har baar ghus jao.”
“Acha teek hai. Main chal jaongi par pehle mujhe jawab do phir.”
“Kis baat ka jawaab?”
“Tum har baar humara topic sab ke saath discuss karne me kyun avoid karte ho?”
“Kya matlab humara topic?”
“Us. Tum Aur mein. Maine dekha hai jab bhi koi baat hoti hai humare baare tum avoid kar dete ho. Aisa Kya hai joh tumhe discuss nai kar na chathe?”
“What?! Aise koi baat nai hai.”
“Haan agar aise baat nai hai, toh kyun tumne apne family ko nai bataya tum mere ghar ay the, aur abhi dekho neeche, Musical Aunty humein kuch pooch rahe the aur tumne topic badal diya. Aisa kya hai joh keh nai sakte ek joke hi tha na?”
“Tum agar apna chota sa dimag studies mein laga deti toh shayad paas hojate.”
“Iss ke paas bhi mere jawaab hai. Par dekho tumne phir topic divert kardiya aur main joh tumhe question kar rahe hoon uska toh jawab nai de rahe ho.”
“Tumhein mujhe tang karne mein bohat maza ata hai na? Kyun mere peeche parhe ho?!”
“Agar tum seedha jawab dete toh baat itne lambi bhi nai hoti!”
“Gungun please main request kar raha hoon tum jaon yahan se mera aaj ladai karne ka mood nai hai.”
“Par ladh kon raha hai. Main ne toh sirf sawal kiya. Main jaanti hoon tum mujhse nafrat karte ho par kya main itni buri hoon ke tum mere baare mein sab ke saath discuss nai kar sakte ho?!”
With each passing word, he realised the woman in front of him was insecure. All this time he thought she was just doing this to annoy him. Yet again, he realised he had a lot to learn about her. She may speak without a care in the world, but her words had a deeper meaning than he had realised.
“I’m sorry.” Anubhav apologised softly, she felt the same shock when he had apologised for the time he made her speak to Akriti.
“Sorry. Tum mujhe sorry keh rahe ho par ab kyun? Ab konse galti kar li tumne?” She already thought he suffered from a split personality disorder, but his apologies weren’t something she was used to yet.
“Mujhe nai pata agar yeh galti hai, par mera irada yeh nai tha, ke tumhein lage ke tum itni buri ho ke main tumhare baare mein sab ke samne discuss nai kar sakta.” The man in front of her was always sober, he grew up too early for the world. He wanted to be the best, to achieve his goals was all he wanted, his whole life was dedicated to his science he didn’t want to disappoint his family, so he didn’t take pleasure in these worldly pleasures. He was content with keeping himself reserved for his family and studies, but now he realises this could be the very reason he managed to upset the woman in front of him.
“Arre nai, mera woh matlab nai tha…” She wasn’t one to be easily read, but somehow he managed again to surprise her. She doesn’t know how, but he always manages to see behind the facade. It was her best trick, but her magic always failed in front of him.
“Tumhara wohi matlab tha. I’m sorry ke tumhe aisa laga. Dekho Gungun main thoda kya bohat zyada reserved hoon mujhe apne har baat tumhare tara khul ke kehne ke aadat nai hai.”
“Par mujhse tum joh muh mein aya keh dete ho. Toh aisa kya hai joh tum sab ke saath khul kar nai baat kar sakte?”
She was right. In any form whatsoever, she manages to always get a reaction out of him. Goli Bua was right as he realised he always manages to react to her words or actions, but never manages to do the same with others.
“Gungun, tum na bohat lucky ho joh tumhare mann mein ay tum bol deti hoon bina koi darr, bina koi fikar se, main aisa nai hoon. Shayad tumhara asar mujh par bhi chalne laga hai.” Anubhav had realised the petty little arguments they shared didn’t possess little importance, but managed to bring out a side to him that no one, not even his family, had seen before she entered their lives. At first he thought he always reacted because of the person she was, a complete total opposite of the ideology he followed. He found her to be the total opposite of a normal good person, but now he continues to realise how wrong he was in his judgement.
“Main kuch samjhe nai.” Gungun spoke as she fell further into realisation of how different they were. Her hope of him opening up to her was looking slim to none. These small sentences weren’t helping anymore. She wanted to get to know him more, more than anyone else could ever know. She wanted to move past the petty arguments and discover each other in a new light, but for her they were never in the same book, so how would they fall onto the same page?
“Gungun!” Sargam called for her soon to be daughter in law.
“Mujhe extra baatein karne ke aadat nai hai. Dekho Maa tumhein bola rahe hai tum jao main ata hoon.” Anubhav spoke in hope she would drop this matter.
“Teek hai main jaa rahe hoon.” Gungun said dejected. She wanted to talk more. Maybe he would give in, but her luck wasn’t on her side today. This conservation will have to be repeated for another time now. For now, her mother-in-law was calling her she didn’t want to disappoint her, so she agreed to leave.
“Aunty!! Apne mujhe bhulaya?” Gungun announced herself as she came back downstairs.
“Han mujhe aur humare Anu ke bade Maa ko tum se kuch baat karne hai, chalo.”
“Mujhse baat karne hai, par kyun?”
“Arre chalo main tum sab bata deti hoon.” Sargam spoke as she made her way to Sunanda’s room. “Jeeji, main Gungun ko le aye.”
Gungun had followed in the footsteps of her sweetest Aunty. The curiosity was killing her, her insecurities settling in as though she had made a mistake. She felt as if she was a little child again, the very one that had suffered through her mother’s wrath at any given moment. For a moment, Gungun had forgotten this wasn’t the same family she had grown to love. Her fear was kicking, but she was not aware of the sweet surprise that was to follow.
“Aap ko koi kam tha Aunty?” Spoke a fearing Gungun.
“Arre tum darr kyun rahe ho?! Yahan ao, mere paas behto mujhe tumse kuch kehna hai.” Uttered a loving Sunanda
“Ji Aunty.” Gungun made her way to sit in front of Sunanda. She had never felt this intimated in awhile. Deep inside she knew there was nothing to worry about, but her conscious was swayed away from every sane thinking.
“Mere pyaari bachi. Maine toh tumhe pehle nazar mein pehchan liya tha, ke tum humare Anu ke liye ek acha jor ho. Haina Sargam?” This had surprised Gungun. She was used to throwing the biggest tantrums just for the smallest part of attention, yet here she was without having said a word, receiving the purest form of love from another mother figure.
“Han jeeji! Aap toh bilkul sai nikli.” Sargam commented as she stood tall above a small sitting Gungun and cupped her face lovingly.
Gungun’s fear was swept right away by the two women around her. Her mind wasn’t processing what she did to deserve this love, but nevertheless, was appreciative of it. “Aap dono itne sweet ho mujhe samaj nai araha main aap ko itne sweet se baatein joh apne mere liye kahe usse thank you kaise bolon.” Apart from her Bua, Gungun never had the opportunity to get close to any other elder woman, but here she was wanting to spend more time with them. These small moments were as to be a life-changing one for her.
It was now time for Sunanda to lovingly cup Gungun’s face. “Tum chathi ho ke tum mujhe yeh joh angrezi mein thank you kehte ho woh karna hai na, toh mere ek baat manogi?”
“Aap ke ek baat kya main toh aap ke so baaton ko manongi.” It was clear the smallest bit of kindness had touched Gungun like nothing else.
“Toh isse rakhlo. Maine khaas tumhare liye banwaya hai.” Sunanda had brought forward the very gold jewellery that she had refurbished in a new design for Gungun.
As Sunanda opened the box, Gungun was left bewildered. It was one thing to accept compliments; they were free of cost and meant more to her, but this, this was a whole other craze, especially when she knew the Kulshreshth’s weren’t as well off compared to her father. Yet, here they were gifting this beautiful, expensive piece of jewellery.
“Aunty, main yeh kaise le sakti hoon? Yeh toh bohat expensive hai.” Gungun loved gifts, but she knew this was something she could never accept.
“Kyun nai le sakti? Maine tumhare liye toh khaas banaya hai. Ya tum aise keh rahe ho kyun ke tumhe pasand nai aya? Mere galti hai mujhe pehle tumse design pasand karlena chahiya tha.” Sunanda’s dejection was clear in her face. She wanted to gift her Anu’s Gungun something from herself, but for her it seems she failed.
“Nai aise koi baat nai hai in fact mujhe toh yeh bohat pasand hai, mere style ka bhi hai.”
“Toh phir tum le kyun nai sakti? Jeeji ne bade pyaar se apne Shaadi ke gehne todway te khaas tumhare liye.” Sargam spoke over, confused as to why her would be daughter in law would refuse this precious gift.
Gungun was emotionally moved by her, her heart wasn’t filled with warmth. She didn’t understand why someone would go out of their way for her. Her conscious was in denial, how did she never realise how important she had became to Anubhav’s family. She remembered their discussion fondly. She would never shy away from admitting she loved his family, but here it felt like she was loved too. “Aap ne mere liye ye kiya, par kyun?” Her words were directed at Sunanda.
“Tum humare Anu Ki Gungun ho. Tum jab se ay ho humare zindagi mein, sirf Anu ki zindagi ko ni khil khala liya, par hum sab ki mann mein ek jaga banali. Tumhare adayein, tumhare baatein woh sab ke liye aur humare ghar ki bahu bane keliye kiya. Main bhi chathi thi Shaadi par main bhi tumhe ek tofa doon.”
Gungun’s eyes had teared up by now, Sunanda’s justification had only made her more aware of stupidity. Herself and Anubhav had only planned this wedding to last a year, but she didn’t realise the aftermath of her actions that would lead to his family. She could say they were the sweetest people she had come across, for them, this marriage was a bond for life, a bond that would join her to their family too. She would become a part of their life officially, she would be on the receiving end of more than usual affectionate Kulshreshths, since she would become a daughter in their eyes. A lump had formed in her throat. She had to speak to Anubhav soon, she had to correct her mistake, but first she had to get herself out of the situation in front of her.
“Teek hai. Par apne yeh Shaadi ka gift mere liye banaya hai toh main isse meri Shaadi hone ke baad mein sirf longi.” She wasn’t sure now if her wedding was to happen. She had realised she liked her Mr. Chant Chashmish, but for them to live a life-long journey together was a conservation that would never come out of their mouths. She felt it was in the best interest to somehow manage to try ending this partnership now, rather than after a year to save her loved ones from heartbreak later.
“Arre tum abhi lo ya shaadi ke baad longi kya farak padta hai tum abhi se humare beti ho.” Sunanda wanted Gungun to accept her gift as soon as possible. She had realised earlier the inner beauty which Gungun possessed before the others. This was just a symbol of that for her.
“Aunty, maine aap ke baat maan liye haina, ab aap bhi maan jaye. Main chahthi hoon jab sab saath mein ho toh aap mujhe dedo taki sab ko pata chale ke aap mujhse kitna pyaar karte ho.” Gungun had joked she knew this would lead them off track for now.
“Chal tujhe kya lagta main tumhare baaton ko nai samajte? Seedha bol ke tujhe Anu ke samne jatana hai ke hum tumse kitne pyaar karte hai.” Sunanda had fallen for the prey as she joked too. “Teek hai abhi keliye main apne paas rakhte hoon par badle mein tumhein kuch karne hoga.”
Gungun was relieved, at least for a short while, she would be freed from this guilt. Her main focus was to rectify her mistake. She didn’t think anything would move her to tears more than this, so agreed with what she thought would be less trivial. “Han teek hai Aunty, aap joh kahenge main woh karongi.”
“Toh phir tum bhi humare Anu ke tara, Sargam ko Maa Aur hume Bade Maa bolane ke adat dal lo humein acha lage ga.” Sunanda, after years, felt the void of her daughter being filled partly. She knew nothing would fill it like having her own daughter here, but like herself, she knew Gungun had a lot of love to give out and selfishly wanted to be on the receiving end of it.
“Han Gungun, jab se maine tumhe apne haathon se khilaya hai tab se maine tumhein apne beti ke roop mein dekha hai. Woh toh humari qismat achi hai ke tum mere Anu ke biwi banogi aur hamesha keliye iss ghar mein ajaogi. Toh please humara mann rakhne keliye yeh baat maan lo.” Sargam was the woman who gave birth to Anubhav, yet she had no qualms about sharing the role of being a mother to him. She knew all the household children deserved that extra love and this is what she now wanted for Gungun too.
“Teek hai, Maa, Bade Maa..” Gungun was moved to tears. She knew she should’ve declined the request, but she was selfish too. After years of being deprived of motherly love, she was suddenly receiving it all not just double, but tripled too, if she counted Choti Maa who she knew would want her to do the same.
This was a moment Gungun was to remember her whole life. So far, nothing in her mind would ever come close to this. She would choose to relive this moment again if she could. After shedding some bittersweet tears and long hugs, their trance was broken through Gungun’s ringtone. It was Bua who had called her back home with the engagement being tomorrow. There was a load piling up on Garima’s shoulders and, most importantly, she needed Gungun to understand the rituals that were to follow, so she thought it was best to get them out the way now. After a few more long hugs, Gungun said her goodbyes to her newly found mothers and left with her driver.
Anubhav, who had just missed out on seeing Gungun, had come to join her, thinking they were going to have a meal together now that he had freshened up, but it looked like the plan had fallen through as she left. This had gotten him to think about what if she felt bad after what he said. He didn’t exactly open up to her like she wanted. Understanding Papa Ki Pari was hard for him, it was even harder for him to behave according to how she wanted. He couldn’t even muster up the courage to ask his mother if she left in anger, fearing the teasing if she hadn’t and the anger if she did. All he could do was pray that his Papa Ki Pari was fine.
Bhatnagar’s House
“Garima! Kahan ho tum?! Main agaya hoon!” Dr. Riddhesh had announced himself as he shouted whilst entering. This wasn’t usually like him, but the phone call he had received from his sister worried him.
“Bhaiyya, aap agaye!” Garima had spoken moving swiftly to greet him.
“Han main agaya hoon, par tum batao woh kab se aise hai?”
“Jab se woh ay hai tab se.”
“Lekin aisa kya huwa joh usne apne aap ko kamre mein lock kardiya hai?” The confusion was clear, the engagement was tomorrow. He didn’t want his daughter’s mood to be ruined before any of the festivities started.
“Pata nai bhaiyya, jab mere phone par baat huwi the usse ghar bolane keliye woh tab toh teek the. Par jab ghar ay cheekhne chillane lage mujhe kuch bataya bhi nai aur seedhi apne room mein apne aap ko band kardiya.” Garima filled her brother with what commenced before her eyes, but none of it made sense to her. She did not understand why her niece had acted that way.
“Woh gaye kahan the?”
“Anubhav ke ghar gaye the, lekin driver keh raha tha woh bade khush hokar waha se ay the aur usne seedha Gungun ko yahan chodh diya toh pata nai aisa kya huwa itni jaldi joh yeh aisa bartaav kar rahe hai.”
“Agar woh Anubhav ke ghar gaye toh zaroor unkein bheech mein koi jagra huwa hai. Gungun ki birthday wale din bhi Gungun ne yehi harkat ki toh unke jagre ke baad.”
“Han woh toh teek keh rahe ho, par Gungun ghar akar yeh sab drama kyun shuru karti agar woh usse naraz hoti woh uske ghar se yeh sab karti.”
“Yehi baat mere samaj mein nai araha hai. Ek kam karte hai, main koshish karta hoon Gungun se baat karke, shayad door khol de aur agar nai toh phir hum Anubhav ko phone karte hai.” Dr. Riddhesh spoke in hope. He hoped this would be an easy fight between his stubborn daughter and him. Maybe she would feel sorry for him and let herself out after he spoke to her, but he should’ve expected the forthcoming.
Dr. Riddhesh tried to outlast his battle with his daughter for as long as he could, but this time he was hopeless again. Gungun was adamant about staying locked up in her room. He almost thought it was a ploy of hers to have the wedding called off. Yet, he was a concerned father after all, he didn’t want to, but he had to turn to his future son-in-law again. Maybe he would have better luck.
Kulshreshth’s House
Gungun had left without saying a word to him. Deep inside he knew why he was affected by this, but this wasn’t something he was ready to admit to the world, let alone her. He had thought maybe he should phone her. At least he could hear her voice this way and share their usual little nok-jhok that he had grown used to. He wouldn’t admit this to her, but that is the reason why he started to ring her on a daily basis. She was the highlight of his day. He had lived a very plain life up until now. He would never complain about it though it was what made him him. A self-made man, any regular middle-class person could only imagine what he had achieved, yet he had managed to do so for himself. But now there was something mindlessly amusing to him. A small simple conversation could turn into a battle of words in seconds. He didn’t even know he would become a part of this childishness. He was always the somber, quiet type who hated noise and any loud commotion, yet he was always in the middle of one. She had managed to always evoke an emotion in him.
His trance, broken by the buzz of his phone, a call from none other than his would-be father-in-law. “Hello Sir, sab teek hai apne iss waqt phone kiya?” Anubhav anticipated the worst. It wasn’t every day his father-in-law phoned to check up on him.
“Mujhe pata hai galti Gungun ke hai par tumhare dono ke aaj kya koi badi ladai huwi thi?” Dr. Riddhesh knew to expect the least from Gungun, but this time he didn’t know how wrong he would be.
“Ladai? Main kuch samjha nai Sir. Humare bheech mein aise koi ladai nai huwi thi kyun kuch huwa hai kya?” Anubhav did not know what to expect, why would Dr. Riddhesh even ask him something like this.
“Mujhe khud kuch samaj nai araha hai. Garima keh rahe hai ke Gungun jab se tumhare ghar se ay hai chekhne aur chilane lage the aur tab se apne aap ko room mein lock karliya hai. Na humein andar ane de rahe hai aur na kuch bol rahe hai. Toh mujhe laga shayad uske birthday wale din ke nakhre chal rahe the isiliye tumse pocha kya kuch huwa hai.”
Anubhav didn’t know what to think. How could such a petty fight of theirs earlier on affect her in this way? No, there had to be something more to this, his heart thought, but what? Confusion was clear on his face, all he hoped for this was all a misunderstanding and it was one of her ways to get what she wanted, but he couldn’t think straight. He had seen how she broke down before. It wasn’t healthy for her. Her pain, her agony ate her up every day. How was she to survive alone if something indeed had happened? After all the effort she put in to help his family, his Chachu out, he wanted to return that favour. He would forever be grateful for what she had done and would always rush to help if she was ever in need of it. “Sir, mujhe bhi nai pata kya huwa hai par main chance nai lena chatha agar meri galti hai toh I’ll apologise, but woh mera phone toh bilkul nai pick karegi aur aap sab ko andar ane nai de rahe toh woh mujhe kaise ane degi.” Anubhav didn’t want to raise Dr. Riddhesh’s alarm and share his worry about what this might be, but he had to find a way to talk to her.
“Ek rasta hai. Thoda ajeeb hai, par mere dimag mein aur koi idea nai hai.”
“Ajeeb hai ya nai, mujhe koi problem nai hai. Aap sirf mujhe yeh bataye mujhe karna kya hai.” Anubhav could not take a risk. He had to get to the bottom of this. Gungun. The girl who could light any room was currently suffering. His mind would not allow her to be left alone with her thoughts.
“Teek hai phir tum abhi yahan ajao.”
“Teek hai main ajata hoon.” In all of this chaos, Anubhav did not realise how much he was changing just for Gungun. He was a man who followed a straight set of rules, yet here he himself did not remember how he fought with Gungun for Chavvi to return home on time, yet he was leaving his house late at night for this very girl.
Bhatnagar’s House
“Anubhav agaya hai, bhaiyya.” Garima informed Dr. Riddhesh, who knew he had made the right decision of getting his daughter married to Anubhav even now Anubhav solidified that thought by his attendance as soon as he informed him.
“Namaste Sir, plan kya hai?” Although Anubhav wanted to be respectful, he couldn’t wait any longer. He had to see Gungun, find out what was wrong. Maybe he could help.
Dr. Riddhesh couldn’t help but snicker. He knew he had met his match, a person who would do anything for his Gungun whether he would admit it or not. His actions to follow would only go on to prove it. “Mere saath ao, main bata hoon.”
As Anubhav had followed Dr. Riddhesh outside the house, he couldn’t believe himself what he was about to agree to do, but if it meant it could help Gungun he would do it in a heartbeat. “Chadh toh jaonga, par main kya main Ek baat keh sakta hoon?”
“Zaroor. Go ahead.”
“Woh upar khidki tak chadh jaonga, par jab Gungun mujhe dekhe gaye toh woh aap dono ko bhi dekh legi aur woh samaj jayegi ke aapne mujhe yahan bulaya hai toh agar galti mere hai toh mujhe khud sorry bolna chahiye aapke influence ke waja se nai. Jaise pehle jab maine usse phone karke sorry bola aur Gungun se chupaya ke aapne mujhe phone kiya tha. Toh kya ab hum phir yeh kar sakte hai?”
“Han bilkul tum teek keh rahe ho. Tum jao hum andar jaate hai.”
“Ok Sir.” It wasn’t that he wanted to be disrespectful, he knew they cared about Gungun and had every right to look over her, but he knew he wouldn’t be able to open to her with everyone’s gaze upon them. It was hard enough for him as it was to discuss every little personal thing about him. He didn’t want the added pressure of everyone else being there, so as he made his way to Gungun’s window he had decided this time he wouldn’t shut her out, not like earlier today. Tonight, he would try his best to share his every thought in the hope she would feel better.
Gungun sat weeping in the corner of her room. She thought she’d been used to her mother’s disappointment by now, but today, again as usual, she was disturbed right after every phone call. Presently, she couldn’t think straight at all. How could a mother be like that, she thought to herself.
How could one be cruel to the very child she had conceived, but this time it wasn’t even all the taunts that disappointed her, it was her horrible accusations of the family she had come to call her own, the only family she had other than Papa and Bua. In all this she had come to the realisation how she was following her mother’s lead in becoming a horrible person. She felt disgusted with herself. After today, especially, how was she to look at the Kulshreshth family without feeling guilty?
The love and respect she had received today from both Maa and Bade Maa she would forever be grateful for, yet here she sat and realised how wrong she would be doing to them. In her mind, she was only planning to leave Anubhav, so she could enjoy her life. She was young. She didn’t know much about these worldly marriage relationships, but now with the wedding date approaching, the continuous talks, she didn’t realise the after effects it would have on the rest of the members if the marriage were to end. Yes, Anubhav had mentioned before that her family were upset when the marriage first broke off, but how would they deal with it once their relationship came to an end after a year? All the love and affection they’ll share between them in this one year will it manage to outweigh their disappointment and hatred for leaving Anubhav? For leaving them? She doesn’t think so.
Clank! Clank! Gungun’s train of thoughts was yet again interrupted by knocks for her to open the door. She knew she shouldn’t put them through this trouble, but she just needed some time to collect her thoughts, to analyse how she was to move forward from here without anyone’s pressure. However, her tearstained face turned into shock when she realised the noise wasn’t coming from her bedroom door anymore.
“Yeh awaz toh window se arahe hai. Oh God! Kahin chor nai agaya! Ab kya karun?! God, pehle se mere din itna kharab jaa raha hai, joh ab iss chor ko bhi bhej diya hai.” Gungun stood up questioning her life at the very moment, but she wasn’t one to back away from a fight, so she grabbed onto an umbrella tightly, granted it was not the best of weapons, but it was the first thing she could hold onto and not once did she underestimate herself. As she slowly took small steps to the window she wasn’t aware of the surprise that was hidden behind her satin curtains. “Tum!?!” If it was possible for her big doe eyes to turn any bigger at that moment, then it would’ve happened. She would’ve been less surprised if there had been a thief behind them than her Mr. Khadoos who was hanging onto dear life at the moment. “Tum yahan kya kar rahe ho?! Aur agar mere ghar ana hi tha toh insaano ke jaise darwaze se nai asakte the! Ab batao bhi! Kahin tumne sharab peli hai kya joh tumhara dimag kharab hogaya hai Aur tum yahan agaye ho?!”
“Gungun, sawal baad mein pooch lena pehle mujhe andar toh ane do.” Anubhav knew if she saw him struggling, that would distract her enough for her to help him inside.
Gungun, to say she was surprised, was a small word to describe her shock, yet she couldn’t leave him hanging outside her window, so she dropped the umbrella and raised her hand out for him to hold onto. As he placed his hand into hers, she was caught off guard again. This was the man who everyone important wanted for her to give her hand to him for life. As he made his way into her room and stood tall before her, she couldn’t help gazing at him. For the very first time she had taken his features into notice, he was a handsome man, she had to admit, he was always better looking than her boyy toys that she called her boyfriend. His dark eyes stared at her. She didn’t know if it was the breeze from the window or the fact they had their hands still intact, but she shuddered at the proximity between them. She was used to being around boys all her life, she was a modern girl. It was normal for her to go around hugging her male friends, yet here she had never felt anything crazier in her life just through the slight touch of his hands, the slight gaze of his eyes on her had made her feel something she had never felt before.
“Aise kya mujhe dekh rahe ho? Main koi bhoot nai hoon joh tum aise ghor rahe ho.” Anubhav was too distracted in trying to redeem his mistake to realise what Gungun was feeling at that moment, but his words had brought her back to reality as she snatched back her hand from his as she returned a questioning gaze at him.
Anubhav had not realised he was still holding Gungun’s hand before she had pulled it away. It felt like a completely natural act for them. He hadn’t realised he would be disappointed when she had pulled away from him. He wasn’t used to any kind of proximity between any girl and him, but now, now everything had changed between them on his side, he was protective of her, he wanted to be with her every step of the way. That was the reason why he had come tonight, why he had come the night she was ill. Just that he didn’t want to admit it to himself let alone her that he cared. “Bhoot nai toh aur kya ho?! Mujhe lage tha koi chor aya hai. Dekho maine jaldi mein ek umbrella bhi utha liya tha!”
Anubhav couldn’t help but laugh, his echo of laughter filled her room like it was the missing piece from her room. Gungun couldn’t believe her eyes. Her Mr Chant Chashmish had never looked more attractive to her than now and to think she was the reason for his laughter she didn’t mind at all. She wanted this to be for life, she wanted his life to be filled with warmth and happiness because of her not any other woman, but she would never admit this to him. “I’m right. Tum pe kar ay ho naa? Itna has kyun rahe ho? Dekho kitne ajeeb lag rahe ho.” She loved his smile, but for her he didn’t need to know that.
“For you information. Main peeta nai hoon aur nahi main pe kar aya hoon. Ata toh main yahan tak paunch tha nahi abhi tak seedha upar chal jata. Aur tum Pagal hogaya ho! Koi chor se ladne keliye umbrella lekar jata hai kya?!” Anubhav still couldn’t contain his laughter, his Papa Ki Pari was something else, something special in a weird way like the original Anubhav would’ve thought.
Gungun knew he was right, but she was never going to let him have the last say in their argument, so she had brought back the topic to what he was doing there. “Tum usse chodo. Tum batao, tum yahan par ay kyun ho phir?”
“Tumhare liye.” Anubhav never wanted the words to come out his mouth like that, but it wasn’t something he could deny, he had come for her. That was the truth.
If Gungun thought his arrival was shocking for her, she hadn’t thought ahead to this point. “Main pagal ho rahe hoon. Mere kan bajne lage hai.” Gungun placed herself back down on the floor and curled into a ball as she rocked herself back and forth. As Gungun raised her head back up she was still in shock. “Tum sach mein yahan ho!? Aur tumne sach mein ye kaha ke tum mere liye ay ho?!”
Anubhav had joined Gungun and sat right beside her. It felt completely natural for him. “Han. Main tumhare liye aya hoon.” He knew he had already let loose with his line before, so he felt there was no use hiding that he had come for her.
“Par kyun? Maine thodi tumhe bulaya hai.” Gungun’s mind was not coming around to this sweet Chant Chashmish.
“Han tumne bulaya nai hai. Sach batao toh Dr. Riddhesh ne mujhe phone kiya tha. Woh keh rahe the keh jab se tum mere ghar se ay ho tumne apne aap ko kamre mein band karliya hai. Toh main maafi mangne aya hoon.” Anubhav spoke the truth. He didn’t want to repeat his mistake from earlier on.
“Maafi? Kis baat maafi?” Gungun was receiving shock upon shock. It looked like everyone was in a misunderstanding that she had locked herself in her room because of him, but this time he had done nothing wrong, so why was he apologising?
“Mera irada tumhe hurt karne ka nai tha. Mujhe sirf apne moments ko share karna nai ata hai. Maine apne puri zindagi mehnat ke hai taki sab mujhe seriously liye. Main ek aam middle-class admi hoon jisne apne puri zindagi lagli kuch bane keliye, ek pehchan banane keliye, aur ab mujhe uski adadat padh gaye hai. Mujhe apna mazaq sab ke samne banne mein acha nai lagta isiliye sorry. Maine tumhe roka tha Maa ko batane mein, kyun ki woh aage jaa ke sab ghar walon ko batadegi aur phir sab kuch mujhe sun na hoga. Isiliye maine tumhe roka, tumhe hurt karna ka irada nai tha.” This was the first time Anubhav had managed to explain how he was to someone. He didn’t expect anyone to understand his perspective, so he never bothered to justify how he was to someone, but today, today he felt he had hurt someone because of how he was and didn’t feel good about it, so he tried, he tried his best to explain, it might not make any sense to her, but at least he could sleep tonight knowing he did the right thing.
It felt nice. This is what she wanted, for him to open up to her, but this had just made her more guilty. She didn’t want his apology, he had done nothing wrong and now, for her, he had done something crazy when it wasn’t his fault. Maybe she was wrong, maybe he was just as sweet as his family, maybe he was a Ras Malai after all.
“Tumhe maafi mangne ke koi zaroorat nai hai. Maine kuch kaha nai. Ab tum jaa sakte ho. Papa ko tumhe bulane ke zaroorat nai the. Kamhka tumhe yeh sab karna pada.” Gungun appreciated his words, but right now he wasn’t helping her. It only affected her more, it only made her want to be left alone more, it only made her want to cry more, but she couldn’t do so until he was still there.
To say Anubhav was disappointed was the least. He was hurt, he had made an effort to open up today and, instead of appreciating it, instead of indulging in a normal sane conversation, she was telling him to get out. He had thought he had made her upset, so had come to apologise, but she did not care one bit. “Tum kya pagal ho? Itne heartless kaise ho sakte ho? Main tumse maafi mang raha hoon aur tum mujhe yahan se jaane ko keh rahe ho. Tameez bhi hai tum mein ya nai?”
“Nai hai. Han main buri hoon, heartless hoon, maine nai tumhe bulaya tha maafi mangne. Chalo teek hai maaf kiya.” As Gungun raised her voice she couldn’t handle it anymore. She didn’t mean to, but she couldn’t stop herself anymore as her tears had flowed out. “Kyun ay ho tum? Tumne kuch nai kiya par please, mujhe akela chod do.” Gungun managed to say a few more words in the hope he would leave. She didn’t like crying in front of people, to her it had made her seem weak.
Anubhav didn’t know what to do. He realised he had made a mistake once again. He thought she was heartless, but it looked as if she was only saving herself from crying in front of him with the way she replied. “Tumhare liye aya tha. Teek hai tum kehte ho maine kuch nai kiya, par main phir bhi tumhare liye aya tha. Tum mujhse keh sakte ho kya problem hai.” He wasn’t following what was wrong, but he needed to know, he needed to help her overcome this.
“Kyun karna chathe ho. Nafrat karte ho tum mujhse toh jao yahan se.” He was ruining her image with every second he lasted here. She wanted to be a strong girl, but he wasn’t allowing her to be one.
“Tumne mere ghar walon ke help ki, mere Chachu ke madat ke, toh mujhe bhi tumhare liye kuch karna hai.” Anubhav was being truthful, she had saved his family from such a big problem. Even when he refused to let her know about it. She had gone out her way and helped them. Because of that, he would do anything for her.
“Teek hai. Kuch karne chathe ho mere liye toh yeh Shaadi tod do.” Anubhav was in shock. He had never thought these words would come out of her mouth. “Kya hua? Nai tod sakte hona toh jao yahan se. Mujhe tumhare help ke koi zaroorat nai hai.”
Anubhav didn’t know how to feel. Was it that bad to marry him that she was having this nervous breakdown in front of him? He didn’t understand what the problem was. She already knew it wasn’t possible for either of them to disagree with their family’s decision. It was the whole reason why they had gotten to this stage. “Gungun, main nai janta ke tum aise kyun keh rahe ho, par han tum sai keh rahe ho main aisa nai kar sakta. Jab pehle shaadi almost toot gaye the sab ghar mein Chachu ke problem se zyada iss baat par udhas te aur tum keh rahe ho ke main abhi jaa kar yeh shaadi cancel kar doon toh yeh possible nai hai, sorry.”
“Sorry kehna band karoge please! Dr. Maya sai keh rahe the main bhi buri hoon, main bhi unke jaise ban jaongi phir sab mujhse nafrat karenge, phir kaise zinda raise sakte hoon tab Bua ya Papa bhi nai mujhe accept karenge.” Gungun didn’t mean to, but she couldn’t stop herself from sharing how she felt with him. Her mother’s words today have put so much pressure on her.
Anubhav didn’t know how to react. The Gungun he knew was never like this. She was having a nervous breakdown in front of him. Why was she questioning herself? He thought she was a confident woman, but today he had seen her in a different light. “Gungun.” Anubhav spoke softly. He knew he had to treat her differently this time,. Her mother was always a serious topic for her. She didn’t like to mention her at all, yet today, he wasn’t grasping why she had brought her up. Did she say something to her for her to react this way. “Mere taraf dekho.” Gungun raised her head slightly, her tearstained face, her doe eyes stared at the man in front of her. “Kisne kahan tum buri ho? Han tum mein bachpana thoda zyada hai, par agar tum itne buri hoti, toh mere family tumhe bilkul nai pasand karte par dekho itne kam time mein woh apne jaan bhi tumhare khatir kurbaan karde.“
“Isiliye keh rahe hoon shaadi cancel kardo. Isse pehle woh mujhse nafrat karne lage cancel kardo.”
“Gungun, tumhe pata hai woh nai manege toh phir kyun aise keh rahe ho?”
“Toh phir main kya karun? Kaise main apne guilt ko kam karon? Galti mere hai. Ab jab main ek saal baad jaongi tumhe chod kar tab woh mujhse nafrat karenge na? Dr. Maya teek keh rahe the. Main unke jaise banne wale hoon aur tumhare family ko dukh ke sewa kuch nai dongi. Jaise maine apne puri life guzaari hai, har baar unse disappointed rahe toh aap ke family bhi aise mere baare mein bura sochenge. Toh kaise sun paongi? Jab Dr. Maya kehenge ke yeh sab mere Papa Aur Bua ke waja se huwa, jab ke woh dono kitne ache hai. Kaise?”
Anubhav forgot how Gungun just wanted to keep everyone’s love for her intact. They both did not realise the aftermath of their little deal, but Anubhav knew he cleared up his every thought to his family about their wedding. “Gungun, haath do apna.” Anubhav had raised out his hand just as Gungun had before.
Gungun was taken aback by the sudden request he shared, why would he want his hand, she already felt things before she didn’t want to feel how was she supposed to deal with his slight touch all the time. “Kyun? Kyun main apna haath doon? Pagal hogaya kya? Ab kya mere haathon ke baare mein bhi kuch bura kehna hai kya?” Gungun didn’t even know what she was saying she didn’t know how to deal with this situation on one hand she wanted to somehow stop this wedding and on the other she had to deal with her growing affection for him.
“Gungun, paglon jaise baatein mat karo. Dekho humne ek deal ke the na? Ke ek saal baad tum jaongi hume chod kar, toh hum phir ek deal karte hai. Mere family ko lagta hai ke tum mere liye perfect ho aur tumhare family ko lagta hai ke main tumhare liye perfect hoon, toh kya hum unke bharose par, ek dusre ko mauka de diya? Maine iss rishte se han bolne se pehle yeh kaha tha ke agar humare nai bante toh woh hume alag hone mein rok nai sakte. Toh tumhe guilt feel hone ke koi waja nai hai agar humare bheech mein nai bane aur hum alag hona chathe hai.”
What Anubhav had said made sense to Gungun, but what she couldn’t understand was why her family felt she was right for him. He didn’t seem to like her one bit, didn’t agree to the character she possessed, so why. “Mujhe ek baat samaj nai ate. Mujhe pata hai kyun mere Papa ko lagta hai ke tum mere liye perfect ho par tumhare family ko kyun lagta hai ke mera rishta tumse jod kar tumhe koi faida hai?”
Anubhav snickered, Gungun’s question was exactly what Anubhav had thought when his family brought up this conversation. How? Why? Why her? What did she have that his family thought she was perfect for him, but he understood, he understood what his family wanted for him. It wasn’t that, he wasn’t happy in life, he was content, but they feel his pressure to be the best had freed him from any normal childhood experience where one would make mistakes. “Tum joh pooch rahe ho maine bhi yeh socha ke aisa kya hai tum mein joh mere gala mein daal rahe hai. Mujhe shor sharaba bilkul nai pasand hai aur jahan tum ho wahan mujhe shaati kaise mil sakte. Unko lagta hai ke mujhe mera bachpan nai mila aur lagta hai ke mujhe mauka nai mila khul ke apne zindagi jeene mein. Sirf apne kam ya ghar, parivaar mein apna saare time bitadiya. Par mujhe koi shikayat nai hai iss mein. Yeh cheez joh woh jeena keh the hai mujhe uske baare mein bilkul nai interest hai aur nahi kabhi tha par ab, ab jab sab ko dekhta hoon, toh sochta hoon ke aisa kya hai joh maine miss kar diya. Sab ko lagta hai tum mujhe seekhadongi jaise main tumhe zindagi ki samajhdhari seekhaoga. Hum kaise ek dosre ko complete karenge woh mujhe nai pata, par unke bharosa par yakeen karke hum ek dusre ko mauka toh de sakte hai na? Phir tumhe guilty bhi nai feel hoga aur tumhare Maa bhi kuch nai keh sakte.”
Gungun was moved by his words, she didn’t realise when she had placed her hand into his. As he engulfed her hand into his, she realised she had made the perfect decision. She knew she wanted to make him laugh, to make him enjoy life and that was what his family wanted too. She wanted to be there for him and right now, he was there for her. Just by one conversation he had solved her problem. “Aaj tumhare Maa aur Bade Maa ne mujhe ek gift diya tha. Unko tumhare biwi keliye apne shaadi ke gold jewellery refurbish karwa ke dena chathe the. Aaj mujhe jitna pyaar aur izzat mila tha, utna toh mere apne Maa ne bhi nai di mujhe. Aaj jab main ghar arahe the toh unhone kaha ke main kisi ko khushi nai de sakte hoon, mujhe paida karke galti karli aur apke family sirf humara rishta paiso keliye kar rahe hai.”
This had shocked Anubhav. He wasn’t used to a family member wanting to badmouth one of their own in this way. Their family had jokes, engaged in banter, they would make fun of his father’s non-singing ability, but would never berate him for the person he was. His family thought he was missing something in life, but here Gungun was missing something more than him, love, love that his family could give her; no wonder she really loved his family. In his eyes, they hadn’t done anything extraordinary for her, but for her she had felt like those little moments were the best thing of her life. And now, after listening to how her mother spoke to her, he couldn’t help but feel sorry for her. He wanted to comfort her, to hold her in his arms, tell her it would be ok, tell her she had another family waiting for her to officially join them, but he wasn’t used to showering affection so openly, so he decided against it. Today, he would try using words instead. “Gungun, Bade Maa aur Maa ne woh gehne tumhare liye banaye the. Tumhare khushi keliye, isiliye tum usse rakhle na woh unke pyaar aur arshirvard ka tarika hai. Tum apne Maa ke baton mein mat ao, tum janti ho ke mere family kaise hai aur woh jante hai ke tum kaise ho isiliye toh tumhe chuna hai mere liye. Toh phir kya jawab hai tumhara?” Yes, she had given her his hand for him to hold, but he wanted to hear it from her own mouth. If they were to work, they had to work on their communication skills.
Gungun had all of sudden felt shy, she didn’t know where to look. When she used to agree to be someone’s girlfriend it meant nothing to her, so she didn’t care about it, but here she knew as soon as the words were to come out her mouth it would change everything. It would allow someone to come close to her physically and mentally. He already knew her a bit too well for her liking. How was she to deal with this when she couldn’t stop her growing affection for him? But this was what everyone wanted. She was allowed to feel this way. She was a bit embarrassed. This was a first for her, a first for her in actually liking someone, but she realised it was the same for him. From the way he spoke and he behaved, she knew he was in the same boat as her. So, using the confidence everyone had spoken she possessed, she spoke up. “Han. Unke khushi keliye nai, par apne liye main tumhe, humhe ek chance dena chathi hoon.” Gungun surprised herself as she spoke those words. She didn’t mean to say anything more than yes, but she wasn’t herself in front of him anymore, she couldn’t control herself in front of him.
Anubhav was not a person to smile easily, but tonight her words had actually brought him joy. Yes, their decision to marry was their family’s idea, but now this was something they both had formed a union on without anyone’s pressure. They could experience getting to know each other in their own time just as he wanted. “Toh teek hai phir kal engagement par milte hai, tumhare aur mere engagement mein.”
Anubhav flashed a smile at her, at which Gungun couldn’t help but gaze lovingly at him. She already liked this new form of arrangement of theirs, he was opening up, but right now she didn’t want him to go. He had come at the right time and took away any pain she was going through. Their hands still intact, she didn’t want to lose this slight intimacy they had right now. In fact, she wanted to seal this deal with a hug, she wanted him to hold her, but she already saw how he had reacted before when she had mistakenly held onto him during their game, so, knew she would be overstepping her boundaries. Something he was always against in every scenario. “Teek hai. Kal milte hai. Kaafi late hogaya hai tumhe chalna chahiye.” Gungun knew she was lying through her words, she didn’t want him to go, but knew he had to.
As Anubhav slowly removed his hands from hers, he was starting to realise the new-found intimacy they shared. He knew he wanted to hold onto her before, but that was to comfort her, but now as he was getting ready to leave he wanted to selfishly take her into his arms. He wasn’t one to ever think like this, he was from a conservative family, so even hugging his friends who were females wasn’t common for him, he never engaged in it, but now he found someone who he wanted to give a chance to, someone who wanted to give him a chance. He didn’t know if it was wrong to think this way, but he couldn’t help it. He had made his way up to the door and decided to turn around a final glance at her would do him no harm, but before he would do so, he was stunned by Gungun’s words.
“Anubhav.” His name had never sounded so sweetly. He was pleasantly surprised, this was the first time she had actually taken his name, but if that had surprised him he wasn’t ready for her words to follow as he had turned himself around to face her. “Can I get a hug please.” Gungun knew she was too forward sometimes, but right now this was all she needed after whatever had happened today. He was the only one who knew her situation, her inner turmoil, only from him specifically, she needed a hug.
Anubhav knew his Papa Ki Pari was full of surprises, yet he loved this surprise. He wanted the same thing as her, just lacked the confidence she possessed. However, tonight, he’s spoken more words to her than he has said to others his whole life. A few more wouldn’t hurt him. “Tumhe permission mangne ke koi zaroorat nai hai.” Hearing that Gungun lost all composure, she stood up and ran to him as she jumped, wrapping her arms around his neck, hugging him, then she felt his arms circling her waist to hug her tighter, as they both closed their eyes in pure bliss to savour this moment between them.
