Read this article felt nice so thought of sharing it with you 😊

A splurge of colours marked Holi for Vrindavan and the widows of Varanasi, as over a thousand of them broke the 400-year-old tradition and celebrated the festival within the precincts of the ancient Gopinath temple on Monday.

Another tradition was broken as young Sanskrit scholars from a local Gurukul and Varanasi and pundits from the temple joined the celebrations, signifying the further social assimilation and acceptance of these widows.

Traditionally in Hindu culture, widows are expected to renounce earthly pleasure so they do not celebrate Holi. But women at the shelter for widows, who have been abandoned by their families, celebrated the festival by throwing flowers and coloured powder

Thanks for sharing an article which is so inspiring and positive. It is really heartening to hear about such discriminatory traditions being flouted to bring happiness in the lives of those who are considered to be inauspicious. This is truly a step ahead in the direction of equality for our country.

true Archana
The show has highlighted issues that are real and I'm glad the show is dealing with them in a positive way.

Hi Rose thanks for sharing this article really cheered me up, seeing all these unfortunate ladies start to enjoy life, this organisation doing good work reading the number of widows just shows how many families carry out this old custom of throwing away their once valued member of a household, who cooks cleans nurtures them all her life then suddenly because of her misfortune thrown out. love and miss you.

hi tahera how are you? I'm pleasantly surprised to see you still visiting the forum. Miss you tooo
I was so happy to see the pictures, the way they were celebrating the festival was awesome and yes the organisation is doing a wonderful job. On one side people have progressed so much but on the other side it's terrible to know that these old customs are still practiced
Treating your family member or any person like that is really inhuman and cruel.
