KKR vs PBKS: Pitch Report

In the only match at Eden Gardens this season, Sunrisers Hyderabad piled up a daunting 226 batting first, underlining the venue’s batting-friendly nature. The ground has also emerged as the fastest-scoring in the IPL since 2023, reinforcing expectations of another high-scoring contest. A steady drizzle disrupted both teams’ training sessions on Sunday, but conditions are expected to improve, with a clearer forecast in place for Monday’s clash.

🏏IPL 2026:Kolkata Knight Riders vs Punjab Kings, 12th Match🏏

Match 12 of the ongoing IPL 2026 will see Kolkata Knight Riders take on Punjab Kings at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on today, April 6, promising an exciting contest between bat and ball.

Kolkata Knight Riders have endured a disappointing start to their campaign, losing both of their opening matches.

They began with a defeat against Mumbai Indians and followed it up with another loss to the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

With back-to-back setbacks, KKR will be eager to turn things around and register its first win of the season. Returning to their home ground could provide the much-needed boost, as the support of the Eden Gardens crowd might inspire a stronger performance.

In contrast, Punjab Kings have been one of the standout teams so far this season, impressing with both their strategy and execution.

They kicked off their campaign with a thrilling last-over chase against Gujarat Titans and then produced a dominant display to defeat Chennai Super Kings in Chennai. Riding high on confidence, PBKS will aim to continue their winning momentum and secure a third consecutive victory.

With KKR desperate to bounce back and PBKS looking to maintain their perfect run, an intense and closely fought encounter is on the cards.

Echoes of chaos at Eden - There are games, and then there are KKR vs PBKS games, where logic often takes a backseat. This rivalry has produced two of the most outrageous results in IPL history - Punjab Kings defending just 111, the lowest ever and then chasing down 262 in just 18.4 overs in Kolkata in 2024. That night, Shreyas Iyer was leading KKR, the same captain who would go on to lift the title, but is now on the other side. Add to that his 481 runs in 16 games against KKR, and suddenly, the narrative writes itself.

KKR's questions to answer - Kolkata Knight Riders' season has teased brilliance without delivering results. They've shown they can pile on the runs, but their inability to control games has hurt them. Angkrish Raghuvanshi has been the standout, with back-to-back fifties, though two run-outs in the last game exposed lapses in communication. Finn Allen has been electric at the top, striking at 270.8, but KKR will want more time from him at the crease. Ajinkya Rahane's contrasting starts, fluent in one, struggling in the next, highlight their inconsistency, especially with his strike rate dipping after the Powerplay. Rinku Singh has looked in good touch but is yet to convert starts into a match-defining innings.

Decisions, balance and the bowling puzzle - Their bigger headache, though, lies with their bowling and combinations. Do they bring in Rovman Powell for added firepower and risk leaving out Blessing Muzarabani, who picked up a four-fer? Cameron Green, their big-money signing, is yet to make an impact and could be key if he starts contributing with the ball. Varun Chakaravarthy's dip in form since the second half of the T20 World Cup has added pressure on Sunil Narine and Anukul Roy to hold the middle overs together. Kartik Tyagi's raw pace, consistently above 145 kph, has impressed, but inconsistency from the pacers has cost them in both games. Right now, KKR look like a side still searching for the right balance.

PBKS riding the wave - Punjab Kings, in contrast, arrive with clarity and momentum. Their Aussie core - Stoinis, Cooper Connolly, and Bartlett has added structure, while Marco Jansen brings that extra edge with both ball and bat. Connolly has already stamped his authority with a match-winning 73 off 44, while Prabhsimran Singh has provided solid starts. Then came Priyansh Arya's stunning 39 off 11 against CSK, a reminder of the depth and fearlessness in this lineup. Add to that Shreyas Iyer's familiarity with KKR and his strong record against them, and PBKS suddenly look like a side with both belief and firepower.

Match-ups that could decide it - If there's one battle that could tilt the game, it’s Yuzvendra Chahal vs KKR. With 33 wickets against them, including a hat-trick, he has historically troubled this lineup. On the other hand, KKR will rely heavily on their experienced core Allen, Narine, and Rinku to step up in crunch moments. Vijaykumar Vyshak's 5 wickets in two games have been a big positive for PBKS, but they will expect more from Arshdeep Singh and Xavier Bartlett to complement that effort, especially at the death.

Team form (Last 5 completed games, recent first)

KKR - LLLLW

PBKS - WWLWL.

Expect the unexpected

Eden Gardens has turned into a run-scoring haven, with 190 often just par and 200-plus totals becoming the norm, but as this rivalry proves, no number is ever safe here. KKR come in desperate to fix their flaws, while PBKS ride a wave of confidence, setting the stage for another classic where momentum can flip in an instant, and the unexpected feels almost inevitable.
