Chapter 57
Geet knocked on Yash's office door and entered. She saw Meera, Yash and Annie joking and laughing.
"Sorry to interrupt, but Anwesha I am ready to leave when you are" Geet said
"I am ready too. Let's go", Annie said, getting up from the sofa and saying "See you guys later" to Meera and Yash.
Annie came up to Geet and locked arms with her, surprising Geet.
"Why does she act so familiar with me?" Geet wondered.
''Oh, I forgot", Geet said, turning back to Meera. "I have finished the design for the new project. Here you go Meera"
Meera took the folder somewhat surprised and said ''But the deadline is Friday and it is only Wednesday today. Are you sure you don't want more time? No one else has handed their designs in yet"
"No Meera. Once I decide I'm done, I'm done. No second thoughts. I am happy with my design and hopefully the client will be too so he will chose my design. If not, then my bad luck" Geet replied
Turning back to Annie, she said "Shall we go?"
"Yes, lets" Annie said pulling Geet away with her.
Yash and Meera looked at each other and then at Geet's retreating figure "Geet is quite confident isn't she?"Yash said.
"Yes, and impressive too" Meera added. "I would like to see her win this project and let her have the opportunity to showcase herself with Maan. He would be suitably impressed"
Annie and Geet sat in the back of the car. As the driver took them to Khurana Mansion, Annie took the opportunity to interrogate Geet. She found out about Geet's childhood, her best friend Pinky, her sister Raji, her Adi bhai, the controlling men in her family and her passion for design. Annie didn't need to ask too many questions and Geet felt comfortable to volunteer the information herself.
"She is so bubbly and cute. No wonder Bhai is besotted with her. Only need her to feel the same or should I say, admit she feels the same", Annie thought.
In all her talks, Geet failed to mention Maan or a love interest, so Annie decided to probe.
"So Geet, while you were in university, I bet there were lots of boys running after you"
Geet blushed and shook her head saying "No. Actually Annie, I was so bookish and kept to my small circle of friends, that I didn't notice any boys or let's just say they didn't notice me. Also I didn't want to gain their attention in case word got back to my brother... He would have pulled me out of college by my ear and taken me back to Hoshiyarpur to get married".
''Oh" Annie said. "Well at least Bhai has no competition...as if he could have competition" she thought.
"So nobody since then, Geet? I mean anyone you find attractive or cute?"Annie continued to ask.
Geet blushed and was about to say something when the driver interrupted saying "Anwesha Maam, we are here"
The moment was lost and Geet clammed up.
''Not to worry, I will ask her later" Annie thought.
"Let's go Geet. Get ready to meet the greatest nautanki ever" Annie said pulling Geet out of the car.
Geet looked at her in confusion "Nautanki?"
"Yes, my Daadi!!" Annie replied. Both girls giggled as they entered arm in arm in Khurana mansion.
"Anwesha, Anwesha" Daadi shouted seeing Annie enter the mansion.
"What is it Daadi?" Annie asked with concern seeing her Daadi animated.
"Where are all the paintings and photographs? Has someone stolen them? I can't find any of them anywhere" Daadi said dramatically. "All my beautiful memories have gone!"
"Daadi, calm down please. Bhai asked for them to be taken down" Annie replied.
Daadi looked confused then said "And why would your Bhai do that exactly? To upset me, right? But why would he do that? Revenge haina? Just because I ask him to get married." She sat down melodramatically, covering her eyes with her arm and said "I am concerned about him, and he takes my memories away..."
Putting her hand over Daadi's Annie said. "Nothing like that Daadi. Actually Bhai noticed that a lot of the frames were old and dirty, so he asked for them to be cleaned or replaced. Keeping your memories new and shiny"
"Oh. See, my boy is so thoughtful. I knew it! But you Annie, you would never think of doing something so nice" Daadi said.
Annie rolled her eyes suppressing a smile. ''Enough now, Daadi. The mystery of the missing paintings is now solved" Annie said. "Come meet Geet. She is the new interior designer working with Meera"
"Oh hello beta," Daadi said shaking Geet's hand.
"Hello Mrs Khurana" Geet replied.
"Oh don't call me that, Geet. I haven't been called that in years! That name is reserved for my Bahu now. Call me Daadi. Everyone does".
Get smiled and said "Okay Daadi"
Daadi looked at Geet keenly, thinking she is quite pretty and then blurted out the question ''So Geet, how old are you?"
Geet was surprised at the question, but decided to answer, since she was MK's grandmother. "21 years old"
Daadi thought "A bit on the young side but not too young! I wonder ..."
"Are you married or seeing anyone?" Daadi continued
"Daadi" Annie interrupted giving her a glare. Geet was taken aback by this question."Why are these women obsessed by my marital status?" she thought
"Geet, let's go up and look at my room. So you can begin work "dragging Geet away from Daadi.
"Geet, don't mind Daadi. She is obsessed by Bhai's marriage. Everyone she sees, she sees as a potential bride" Annie whispered to Geet. "Waise, if you are interested..." Annie stopped midsentence seeing Geet stiffen and become uncomfortable. "Sorry" Annie said. "We tease each other quite a bit here. I felt so comfortable with you, that I forgot you weren't one of us" Annie explained.
''It's okay" Geet said meekly. "Can we see the room".
"Yes, of course" Annie said, leading the way.
After a few hours discussing the room, Annie and Geet came downstairs. Geet turned to Annie in the hall and said "Okay Anwesha. I have some ideas. I will work on them and send them to you for review" Looking at Daadi she said "Okay Daadi. I should get going now. It was lovely to have met you"
"Oh! Geet wait! You can't leave like this" Daadi said rushing over to Geet and holding her arm.
''Why not?" Geet said suddenly worried.
"Beta, it is dinner time and I won't let you go without feeding you. And you cannot say no to your Daadi- You called me Daadi, didn't you?"
Geet knew she was stuck and would have to stay for dinner. She was unsure what rich people like the Khuranas ate for dinner, "probably something bland and continental, not like my chat pata Punjabi food. Oh well Geet, it is only one meal, you will cope". Taking a deep breath Geet responded saying "Okay Daadi. As it is you asking me, then I will be pleased to stay for dinner"
All three sat down for dinner. Geet was pleasantly surprised to see all her favourite foods laid out before her. Daadi saw her expression and asked "What happened, Geet? Do you not like this food? We can get something else for you". She was about to call Nakul when she heard Geet say "No Daadi. It is all my favourite food. I just didn't expect it"
Daadi looked at her with confusion and asked "Why beta?"
"Wo, you are such a high society family I thought..." but Geet stopped before she said anything stupid.
Both Annie and Daadi laughed. "Hmmm you thought we would eat frogs legs and snails?" Daadi giggled. "Geet just because we are...How did you say it? Haan 'High society' doesn't mean we have forgotten our roots. We are Punjabi and therefore eat, drink, sleep Punjabi! Now enough chit chat. Let's eat"
As they were eating Daadi decided to ask her unfinished question she asked earlier. ''So Geet, I was asking earlier whether you were attached or not. I mean boyfriend, husband or partner?"
Geet blushed and looked down at her plate, unsure how to answer.
Seeing her blush Daadi said "Looking at your reaction, there is someone, but you don't want to tell. It is okay, I won't force you. But if it doesn't work out, let me know. I might have someone perfect for you" she said without stopping for a breath.
Annie interrupted, trying to make Geet feel at ease. "As I said earlier Geet, Daadi just is obsessed with getting Bhai married. Daadi, please let us enjoy the food"
A bit disheartened, Daadi sighed and said "Okay beta. Whatever you say. Other than eating, what pleasures do I have in life now? I thought before I leave this earth, I would get to see my Bahu and play with my great grandkids... but No, God has other plans, or should I say, you children have other plans"
''Daadi" Annie whined getting frustrated with her Daadi.
Geet tried to placate Daadi by interjecting "I am sure you are wrong Daadi. I am sure you will get to see your Bahu and great grand kids".
Annie smiled to herself thinking "Well Daadi, has already seen her Bahu, though neither of them know it ... but Daadi may have to wait a bit for the great grandkids"
"So why does Mk not want to marry?" Geet asked innocently.
"To annoy me" Daadi replied, but quickly added "He hasn't met anyone he likes yet" on seeing Annie's glare. "l have introduced him to so many girls at parties, arranged dates for him, but nothing. Always the same response... No Daadi" she said frustratedly.
"Have you thought of doing a swayamvar. Like they did on television?" Geet asked.
"No. But what a brilliant idea! Haina Anwesha" Daadi said excitedly. "Just like the Mahajan's one...but only better and not televised...and obviousy not like a teleserial or reality show"
"I could help you organise and do the decoration" Geet said thinking it would be great experience.
Annie looked at Geet in amazement ''Unknowingly you are helping to arrange your own husband's swayamvar. Wait till Maan Bhai finds out Geet," Annie thought becoming alarmed knowing her brother's anger. She listened silently to the conversation between Daadi and Geet, knowing that it would all end in tears.
