CHAPTER-40

Geet put her coffee cup down on the sink and turned the tap on. Grabbing a sponge from the side, she started cleaning it, muttering to herself. Yeh lo…mujhe toh baara kaha tha, ke Geet, I'll pick you up at 10, SHARP…aur aabhi toh saare dus bajne ko hain, aur Mk ki koi khabar hi nahin hain….
She turned the tap off, wiping her hand on the kitchen towel. Picking up her cell phone from the side, she looked at it, sliding the lock gently. Phone karke dekhun, ke kya baat hain? Mk late hone walon mein se nahin hain….kahin, unki tabiyat toh…..nahin, woh thik hi honge, magar kuch problem toh nahin hain? Phone karun? Magar….fine, I'll just ask him when he's coming and hang up..aur extra kuch nahin poochungi!
She nodded her head determinedly, and dialed Maan's number. Her heartbeat rose a little, as she waited for him to pick up, but it started racing as he picked up and instead of saying Hello, murmured, "Geet?"
"Jee…" she said,"Aap…woh….dus, wahaan, yahaan…main…." Her stammering was interrupted, as Maan grinned and said, teasingly, "Forgot your figures of speech again, Ms.Handa?"
"Aap…aap thik toh haina? Itni der hogayi, mujhe lene kyun nahin aaye? Weren't you supposed to pick me up? Aapki tabiyat toh thik hain? You sound tired. Kuch hua hain kya, Mk?" she stopped to suck in a breath, and stiffened hearing his rich chuckle on the other end.
That's when she realized. She had asked him everything except what she had intended to. It was too late to bite her tongue out!
Maan held the phone to his ear, a boyish grin on his face. He propped his elbow on the pillow and held the phone to his other ear, murmuring, "Kya baat hain, jaan! Itne saare sawaal, aur woh bhi mere liye? I'm impressed, love!"
He was still chuckling, as Geet clenched her fists tightly on the other end of the phone. She asked again, this time, controlling her voice, "Aap thik toh haina?"
He laid down on the bed, staring up at the ceiling with a smirk and murmured, huskily, "Main thik hoon, jaan. Bilkul thik hoon. Magar, let me answer all your questions in order, honey!"
He was still grinning as he said,"Main thik hoon, Geet. Yes, I was supposed to pick you up. Yes, I'm a little tired. The conference went on late till last night. 2am to be precise. I came back home at about 3 and so, I slept late. Woke up late. Couldn't come to pick you up on time. There, that's all, right, darling?"
Her heart went out to him, as he finished speaking. Kitna kaam karte hain…. koi dhyaan hi nahin hain aapne aap par….he sounds so exhausted….. She cleared her throat and said, "Uuhhh….koi baat nahin Mk. Aap…aap aaram kijiye, main…main site ke liye nikal jaati hoon. In fact, why don't you take the day off? Main sambhal lungi," she said, suddenly feeling empty inside. She probably wouldn't see him the whole day if he decided to take the day off.
"Nahin, Geet. I'm fine now. Tell you what? Tum….uh…" he hesitated a little, as he continued,"Can you do me a favour?"
"Jee, boliye?" she said, at once and then, regretted it almost immediately, as she imagined his smirk.
His heart warmed, as he heard her enthusiastic reply to do something for him. Bilkul nautanki hain yeh ladki, upar se kuch dikhati hain, aur andaar se kuch aur….
"Geet, why don't you pick me up in an hour? Then, we can start for the site from here. Is that okay?" he asked her warily, waiting nervously for her answer.
Geet stiffened, the phone crushed in her hand. She recalled the last time he had asked her to come to his place. It had ended badly and what had followed had been humiliating and painful for her. Never check me out in my own house, without my knowledge… she winced as she remembered his words. Shaking her head, she said, quietly, "Uh…nahin, Mk. Aap aaram kijiye. Main akele site chali jaungi."
His heart sank, as he heard her reply and somehow, heard the pain behind her words too. Geet yahaan aana hi nahin chahti, aur chahegi bhi kyun? After what happened last time…sab teri galti hain, Maan… he tried again, "Geet, I'm fine now. Aur site jaana zaarori bhi hain. Tum please…yahaan…please come and pick me up.."
"Mk," she said, in a low voice,"It's okay. Main site ke liye nikal ti hoon. You can join me later. Koi baat nahin."
Yeh ladki….itni ziddi hain. meri ek bhi baat nahin manegi…. Magar, isse manana toh parega…kya karoon? He suddenly saw Savitri Devi walk by his room and smirked. Daadima kab kaam aayegi? he thought, suddenly striking up a plan. I'm sorry, Geet…but you left me no other option, honey!
"Daadima? Daadima? DAADIMA?????" Maan screamed his lungs out, holding the phone to his ear.
Geet jumped in surprise, hearing Maan yell out continuously. Yeh Mk ko kya hogaya hain? Itna chilla kar Daadima ko kyun bula rahe hain? she thought, in astonishment.
Maan saw the elderly lady raise an eyebrow at him. He turned away from her, knowing that she would walk into his room. And, she did. As soon as Maan saw her within hearing radius, he sighed loudly, and said,"Thik hain, Geet. Agar tum ghar nahin aana chahti toh, koi baat nahin…main khud…."
"Geet ghar aane wali hain?" Savitri Devi exclaimed.
Maan looked at his grandmother, still holding the phone and said, sadly, "Nahin Daadima. Maine Geet se bohut kaha, lekin, she wants me to go to the site directly. Shayed woh nahin aayegi!"
What the hell? Mk yeh sab kya keh rahe hain, Daadima se? Kitna baara drame baaz hain yeh insaan….isiliye he screamed out like THAT! aab Daaidma ke saamne natak pe natak kiye jaa rahe hain…. main….
"Layiye…hume phone dijiye. Hum baat karte hain," Savitri Devi said firmly, and took the phone from Maan, who happily obliged and lay back on the pillow with a smirk on his face.
"Geet?" Savitri Devi said, with a smile.
"Jee….jee Daadima. Namaste!" Geet said politely, while cursing Maan with all her might mentally.
"Bete, yeh hum kya sun rahe hain? Aap ghar anhin aana chahti?" she demanded.
"Nahin…nahin, Daadima, woh, aisa nahin hain….main…main toh baas…." Geet tried to explain, but all her excuses died down on her lips. Main Daadima se jhoot kaise bolun?
"Bete, hum kuch nahin sunna chahte. Aap aa rahi hain, baas!" she ordered, ignoring all the protests from Geet, "Aap aayengi, humare saath lunch karengi, then, the both of you can leave for the site. Okay?"
"Lekin…main…Daadima, suniye….woh…" Geet was cut short as Savitri Devi said, "Geet, aapne suna nahin maine kaha? Lunch humare saath, in an hour? I'll see you then, bete. Bye!"
She hung up the phone, handing it to Maan who lay grinning at her. She slapped him on the shoulder and said, "Kyun karti hain aap unke saath aisa?"
"Toh main kya karta?" Maan said, snuggling into his blankets more cosily, "Geet seedhe mu meri koi baat nahin maanti…ziddi kahiki…"
"Aap bhi kuch kam hain kya?" Savitri Devi said, with a chuckle and then, added, "Chaliye, uthiye…site bhi toh jaana haina aapko? Taiyyar ho jayiye, Maan!"
"Hmmm…." he murmured, as Savitri Devi left, with a smile. I can imagine the look on your face, Geet…and, I just LOVE IT! he thought, chuckling triumphantly to himself.
*****
She stepped out of her car, staring at the Mansion in front of her. She dragged her feet towards the entrance, cursing Maan with all her might. Samajh te kya hain aapne aapko? Jo mann kiya, woh baas mil jaata hain….khud se nahin hua, toh Daadima ko use kar liya…woh jaante hain, main Daadima ko kabhi nama nahin kar sakti…. Ghatiya insaan kahike….
Her thoughts broke, as the door swung open, before she rang the bell. Savitri Devi grinned seeing Geet and hugged her warmly. She hugged her back, suddenly feeling calm and forgetting her anger with Maan. The elderly lady murmured, "I saw your car in the lawn!"
Geet laughed in a low voice, and broke. Holding her arms gently, she asked, "Kaisi hain aap, Daadima?"
As they walked inside, Savitri Devi looked away from her, crossing her arms over her chest and said, "Aapse bohut naraz hoon. Aare, aapko toh aapni Daadima ki koi parwa hi nahin hain. You haven't even called me once. Aapko ek baar bhi jaanne ka mann nahin kiya, ke aapki Daadima kaisi hain?"
Geet stared at the elderly lady in front of her and smiled inspite of herself. She tried to explain, "Daadima, itna kaam….upar se the takeover….sab kuch…."
"Rehne dijiye, hum sab samajh te hain," Savitri Devi said stiffly, still looking away from Geet.
Geet chuckled and moved closer to her. Turning her to face her fully, Geet held her ears cutely and tilted her head to one side innocently,"I'm sorry Daadima. Maaf kar dijiye. Aage se aisa kabhi nahin hoga."
"Pakka?" she inquired, raising her eyebrow.
"Pakka promise!" Geet said, with a laugh, making Savitri Devi laugh out too.
Maan grinned seeing the two ladies happy with each other. He stood at the top of the staircase, where they didn't notice him, and felt a sense of comfort within seeing Geet blend in so well with his grandmother. However, his smile disappeared as he heard the conversation going on downstairs.
He saw her grandmother stare at Geet's neck carefully and say, "Geet, yeh chain…"
Geet stiffened, as she felt her eyes on the chain. Savitri Devi looked at the chain carefully, and asked, "Yeh aapke Naanima ka chain hain? Yeh toh toot gayaa tha na?" she said, handling the chain carefully in her hand.
Geet gulped down her saliva, racking her brain for a possible answer. She couldn't tell him that it was given to her by Maan. No, the thought made her blush a deep shade of crimson.
"Geet, aagayi tum?" Maan came down the stairs, sensing Geet's unease. He nodded his head reassuringly at her and said, "Chale?"
Geet heaved an inward sigh of relief, as Savitri Devi dropped the subject and said, "Nahin, aap dono lunch kiye bina kahin nahin jaa rahe hain! Chaliye, Geet. I've cooked myself for you, today!"
*****
As they finished lunch, Maan went upstairs to his room to grab a few important files while Geet sat in the hall with Savitri Devi.
"Daadima, aap Lonavala wapas kab jaane wali hain?" she asked, nonchalantly.
"Not very soon, bete!" Savitri Devi said, with a smile.
"Kyun?" she asked, confused, "Aapko wahaan rehna zyada pasand haina?"
"Haan, magar. Aab aap yahaan hain, toh mera wahaan par mann nahin lagega, bete…" she said, sincerely, causing Geet to lower her head, in slight embarrassment.
Geet….Daadima pata nahin tujhse kya umeed lagaye beethi hain…yeh thik nahin ho raha hain…Mk ne shayed Daadima ko mere baaremein kuch bataya bhi nahin hain….isiliye, she's still so fond of me….yeh thik nahin hain..it's almost as if I'm cheating her. Daadima mere upar itna bharosa karti hain, main shayed iss layak hi nahin hoon…
"Geet, chalo. I'm ready," his voice brought Geet out of her thoughts.
She stood up, grabbing her cell phone and car keys. She opened her mouth to say goodbye, when Savitri Devi hugged her and said, "Bete, aap phir aayengi, na?"
Geet smiled weakly and nodded her head for a yes. She was about to leave, when she saw Maan kiss his grandmother goodbye. Her face softened, as she saw pure love and respect between the two people in front of her. The next minute, she saw Maan grabbing his car keys from the table near the door.
As they stepped into the lawn, Geet started walking towards her car, when she was pulled back strongly by Maan, who said, "Where do you think you're going?"
"I brought my car with me, Mk," she tried to explain, when Maan leaned in closer and murmured,"Toh?"
"Toh, I'll see you at the site," she finished, whisking out her keys.
Maan grabbed her waist again and plastered her against himself. Geet cringed away, painfully aware that they were in the freshly manicured lawns of Khurana Mansion and in a place where Savitri Devi could easily see them in their current position.
'I don't think so, sweetheart. You're coming to the site with me!" he said, slightly pushing her towards his car.
"No, I'm not. Aapne mujhe ghar aane keliye force kiya, magar main aapke saath site nahin jaane wali hoon!" Geet said, adamantly.
"When did I force you?" Maan inquired, raising an eyebrow.
"You and your dirty games!" Geet said, in disgust and started walking towards her car, when Maan grabbed her waist again, bringing her extremely close this time.
"Geet, main tumse aakhri baar keh raha hoon. tum mere saath meri gaari mein site chal rahi ho. Now, get in the car, before I…." he was cut short, as Geet jerked him away and said, angrily,"Before you WHAT? Force me? No, wait lemme guess. Aap phirse Daadima se kahenge mujhse kehne keliye, haina? That's all you can do. Jab aapse khud koi kaam nahin hota, aap Daadima ko dhal bana lete hain, haina? But, get this straight. Aisa nahin hoga. Main aapke saath nahin chal rahi hoon!"
She walked towards her car, when Maan held her hand and spun her round dangerously. The stern clenching of his jaw caused Geet's pulse to race, as she realized that she had gone too far and Maan was furious. He picked her up in his arms furiously, carrying her towards his car. Opening the door, he almost pushed her inside, despite her protests and fastened the seatbelt, locking her in place. Before she could get out, he walked over to the other side, got in and started driving off furiously.
Geet stared at him, exasperatedly and leaned back against the seat, closing her eyes. Maan glanced at her sideways and said, calmly, "That was uncalled for!"
"No, it wasn't!" Geet said, icily, without opening her eyes, "Main aapke ghar aana bhi nahin chahti thi Mk. I don't want to be humiliated…I don't like being humiliated…and your house just reminds me of….of humiliation!" The hurt in her tone was evident.
Her phone beeped, and she sighed, picking it up.
"Geet?" the voice washed over her.
"Daadima?" Geet said, surprised, since she hadn't seen the caller ID before picking up, "Jee, Daadima?"
"Bete, aapki gaari aabhi bhi yahaan parked hain. Aap raat ko wapas aane wali hain kya?" the excitement in her voice caused almost a physical pain in Geet's heart.
"Meri gaari…." She trailed away, trying to find a solution when Maan replied, quietly, "You can take it in the morning, tomorrow!"
"NO!" she said, firmly and then spoke into her phone,"Daadima, main aaj raat ko site se laut ke samai aapni gaari le jaungi. Aap chinta mat kijiye. And, I probably won't be coming tonight to meet you. Sirf aapni gaari collect karungi. Toh aap mera intezaar mat kijiye gaa, thik hain?"
"Thik hain, bete…magar aap humse milne toh aayengi na?" Savitri Devi asked eagerly.
Geet couldn't bring herself to disappoint the elderly lady and, so, she hesitated a little and said, "Jee, Daadima, bilkul. Aap aapna khayal rakhna, thik hain?"
As she disconnected the call, Geet stared straight ahead, ignoring Maan completely. He glanced at her and saw her stiff posture. Lowering his head slightly, he murmured, "Geet?"
"Please!" she raised her hand to put a stop to his words, "Don't talk to me."
"I want to," he said, quietly as he steered the car into the highway towards the site.
"I don't want to," she retorted sharply.
