Atty's conservative parents will not like to meet the likes of Mru's parents. But will they sympathize with Mru? Atty's mom seems to that one bright hope.
Maybe one day Lynn will realize that the best chance she has of getting Mru's place is if she marries Atty and moves to his place. Will she then push Atty towards Mru instead of Shy?
Mru may be the fixer upper compared to Shy. But it all depends of what Atty feels for them both. Is he prepared to be the person who can support Mru?
Horror & Harmony
Mendy had told Jaidrith there was going to be a bounce house, he had been on it twice in his entire life, once at Ganpati at Sai Holkar’s society and once when a kind neighbor in Amaltas invited her and Jaidrith even though she didn’t even know them
Jai was up at 6 AM on Saturday, just sat by the front door staring at his “friends” flat aceross the hallway
The Dad went in and out until 8 AM, the boys woke up soon after and waved and gestured to Jai
His pinkie was much better now, he was no longer wearing a brace, the lip injury showed no trace
Mrunal kept the steel gate locked in multiple places so Jai could not let himself out overzealously and she could sleep in peace on Saturdays
Already everything was upended with Aatreya’s arrival, the days the nights and weekends were not their own
Every night when she went to bed she thought about when he was going to pop the question and demand Jai stay over
She didn’t know what she would do then
Sai had given her an open invite to stay over if ever she was alone
But 10 years and not one night she had to be
She went through her closet and looked for outfits to wear to the anniversary
She was going there so Mendy would be happy
She was going there so Jaidrith could be supervised
She knew going there to see Aatreya like a giddy teenager was stupid
All her dresses were too tight, she no longer had the body of 10 years ago, she no longer had that budget either
The Ferragamo and Gucci outfits no longer fit
She chose a peacock blue bandhini silk kurta with a oversized yoke in front with mirrorwork and pompoms in dark pink silk
It was one of her early maternity outfits when she was living in her parents home and hiding pregnancy until 4th month
She wore it in the bathroom Friday night with white pencil pants and twirled on the wet floor
The full length mirror on the bathroom door was forgiving she realized
She took it off folded and put it away
She wondered if she should let Mendy come get him
He had spent the whole 6 hours last time at Ira’s? Bday without eating a morsel
Not many in that group had children with life threatening allergies and/or were “weird”
She rolled over Saturday morning
Reached for her phone
When she wanted “alone time” she usually slept in the living room, last night she slept on the lower birth
“Has he been camping before?” there was a Q from Aatreya
“No” she said yawning
“That’s great then”
“Are there animals?”
He sent a smiley first
“Not one”
There was no “Would you like to go”
“Day trip nah?”
“Umm”
“Day trip is OK” she said
Her fear from every night coming true partially
He was sllllowwwllly making an attempt to have the kid the whole night
“Happy Saturday” he said after 30 minutes
“Your first text just came thru she “replied” to it
“Ouch” he said
“Happy Saturday” “Are your parents home?”
“Yep” he said and sent a picture
They looked as good and as dignified as she had imagined in her mind
Her mother had her pallu pulled over her right shoulder, she was tall, with salt and pepper hair in a bun, and glasses, she looked like Aatreya
The father looked exactly like Apoorva, filled cheeks, rounded nose and curly grey hair
“OK” she said still staring at the pictures
She went to her parents SM and looked at the pictures
Her Dad in swim shorts by some pool, bent over Amruta lounging in a deck chair wearing a hot green bikini, his hand was exactly under her right b---
She went to the bathroom to be sick, too afraid to check out her mother;s latest pictures
She did anyway, she had compulsive urge to hurt herself and inflict pain and crush her soul
Annika Falguni and her husband were on some snowy vacation, and she found Annika being kissed, by both parents on either cheek
Skipped chai, and then made chai, and cried over it
Fixed Jai oatmeal upma and soy milk
He didn’t want to eat in “front of his friends” he said and threw a fit
Kirti watched curiously them from inside still not letting her boys out
Jaidrith was the one who was hurt by the boys’ reckless behavior and here he was begging for the boys to play
Mrunal felt mean
“Amala vaad divasalya partyla jaayche aahe”
(we have to go to a birthday right? Get up)
“Sandhya kalachsa aahet” (its only in the evening) Jai argued
“there will be a bounce house” she said LOUDER
The young boys across had an expression of sadness
Bounce house was a expensive party entertainment
Lynn loved to show off
Mrunal could not afford it today for Dhru’s birthday
She felt like a heel hurting those little boys like that
Tujhī ā'ī tulā paravānagī dē'īla tara tū udyā khēḷāyalā yē'ū śakatōsa
(If ur mother will allow you you should come play tomorrow) she said apologetically
She was ashamed of herself the rest of the morning
After much hassling Jai was ready at 6, he was very opinionated in what he wanted to wear
To her utter shock, he chose blue jeans a white vest and a check full sleeve shirt
He looked like a mini Aatreya
When they arrived at 6:30 PM, she took a nap as he sketched on his ipad and read anime comics
Everyone was there since it was supposed to be from 5 PM until midnight
Lynn was a party animal
She saw Mrunalini but did not come forward acted like her phone was ringing
Mendy saw that and sprinted to the doorway
“Did you see the Rainwing and Mudwing dragon pictures?” Dhru ran over to Aatreya who was behind Mrunal and was spotted by the curious 10 year old
He looked criminally good as always
He was ogling too but she didn’t notice
“Ma, Pa… Jaidrith” Aatreya said nervously
His palms were sweaty
His mother bend down EXACTLY like Apoorva, the father Somesh Rao quickly grabbed her purse lest it fell on the floor, and placed a hand behind her back to offer support
“Oh yes… most importantly “Mrunalini Ghatge” Aatreya laughed waving
Mrunal’s stomach rushed into her mouth as his parents inspected her
“Hello” the mother smiled first
“Hello” Mrunal nodded
“He looks like my son” Pramila Rao announced with a smile to a stunned Mrunal
One more pls nishaaaaaa.........
You once told u will give a lengthy one😳
6 hours at a birthday party with no food? How did anyone not notice? Lynn, Mendy, Atty, none of them did?
Coderlady
Well last time there was food but he refused to eat if you remember. Lynn is very petty so she wont care.
Is Shy around as Atty's date? Will Atty's parents meet two women at the same time?
Huge contrast between the two sets of parents. Mru has a messed up family situation. Atty has what most would consider a normal family. Mru is at risk of being judged for her parents' choices.
Pickle
Mrunal sat by the window with a cup of chai watching the pitter patter of rain savoring the moments from the anniversary of Mendy and Lynn
What an amazing family he had, they were caring and protective and cheerful
Her own mother was moody, selfish and uncaring
She watched Parmila Rao scoop out vegetables her son did not want to eat off his plate
He was a grown man,
When he went to the car to grab his Dad’s after dinner BP meds, she wiped moisture off his lapel
They laughed they joked and they reminisced in Kannada
Mendy was much loved, his mother even chatted with Lynn at length
Mrunal was too shy and too afraid to say much or to be around them much
When she said “He looks like my son”
She had smiled and nodded with confidence
Afterall her darling Dhru was an outcome of the best night of her life how could she be ashamed of him
They had bought carefully vetted toys and books and a giant bag of home made snacks
“We have to check if it is vegetarian” Pramila had whispered to her leaning over as she had watched people walk away with plates of chicken and shrimp
“I am sure there is” she had told her
“We are very orthodox and religious, Aatreya loves Mendy and Lynn, so we have to attend” Pramila had smiled sheepishly
“Yes Mendy is nice” she agreed leaving Lynn out
Who incidentally had not stopped by or checked on her even once, just waves and “How are yous” like the American guests at the hotel threw around at strangers
Jaidrith was just giddy with joy, Ira and Iris chased him around the convention hall along with two other little girls, he was pink and tired and breathless but would not stop
“They can be your new friends” she reminded him as she made him sit on her lap and fed him veg pakoras she had brought from home
He liked baingan and aloo a lot, many nights that was his main meal
She was too over worked to cook
She looked at Atty wondering how he had his ducks in a row
Pramila wound her way through the crowd a couple of times and found a chair by her or dragged one close to her
Mrunal was sure her face was hot pink like her son’s
She was not used to the attention at all, not in the last 10 years
The lady was dignified did not ask anything about her unwanted pregnancy and how she could be a “loose character” like her own mother had accused
Aatreya’s father was quiet, he had brought his ipad, when he was not chatting with parents or in laws he was just reading
“Aatreya told me he has severe allergies”
Mrunal nodded sadly
“Aatreya is still allergic to sesame, we Kannadigas use sesame in everything, I have not used sesame in 33 years” she smiled showing three fingers
“Oh no”
His father and Apoorva nobody eats sesame any more”
Mrunal wanted to burst out crying that was the sweetest thing she had ever heard in her life
She herself ate peanuts and sesame she thought painfully
Mrunal wiped her tears and the moisture from the rain and sipped from her now empty cup
Staring into it
“make another cup?” she asked
It was 3 AM
She was by the window for two hours now
Aatreya conducted kids games and resolved petty fights and waved a magic wand at booboos
“Our flight was very long, he went to Hyderabad, Pune and then Mumbai” Pramila kickstarted conversations on one topic or another every few minutes and told her all about it
She told her about a coworker who made pickles with every vegetable
“We don’t eat much spicy, we eat dadhyonna u know curd rice? We like pickle” she smiled
Her eyes twinkled much like Aatreya’s
She repeatedly pulled her pallu down covering her open arm and shoulder
“Your blouse color is a triple shade” Mrunal commented
“My mother, you know in Nagahole Tiger Reserve?” she asked as if Mrunal would know
Mrunal nodded tentatively
“My paternal grandfather was a forest officer, its so close to Tamil Nadu my husband calls me Tigress” she laughed
Mr Somesh Rao who had been quietly listening to it all lifted his head up and smiled and nodded, changed the leg on leg arrangement to left on top right underneath and went back to reading
“He is very quiet, Aatreya and I need people” she smiled
Mrunal realized her no friend son did too
“If you come to Bangalore I will take you to the Tiger Reserve” she promised
“I will” she nodded
Aatreya was polite and thoughtful, when he brought his mother dinner he brought her a plate as well, she quickly told him that’s what she wants
“can Jaidrith go home with us?” he asked softly when they walked together to drop off plates
“I cant pick him up any later I mean it will be late from here?”
“I meant the night?”
“Oh” her heart sank
His family was here, he wanted his son so they could all be together
What if he sent him to Bangalore
She didn’t have the Raos’ address… or did she?
The rest of the night went in fear psychosis
He picked up Dhru Sunday at Noon, and then every evening after school the following week
He was promptly brought back home by 8 or 9 PM fed and showered ready for bed
It was like she had no work at home any more
No toys strewn anywhere, no yelling no shouting match no legos under her feet, no argument over soaking wet floors
She assumed all of it happened over at Aatreya’s
She instead sat by the window and stared at the rains despite the sneeze and runny nose
Thursday she went to pick him up, they were not home “At the airport dropping my parents off, her ID would not scan so we were delayed”
The neighbor across from him opened the door and found a sneezing Mrunal
“Aatreya’s friend?”
“No Dhru… Jaidrith’s Mum”
“Oh HOW COULD I miss that?” the woman in her 50s laughed
“Victoria” “Vicks” like the thing u need” she laughed
Mrunal nodded itching her face
“come on in and wait I will make tea”
An hour later when Aatreya returned she had fever
Jai was not ready to go he took stupidly long to pack his back pack
She snoozed on the couch
“U look unwell, do u want to rest?” she heard a growl
“That is never going to land u a woman” she scowled sitting up groggily
