In & Out
She went off to her book reading poetry literary session in Munirka. He called her around 8:30
“I am at the event”
“Do u plan to walk home?”
“I don’t I will get a ride don’t worry”
“Can we talk about..”
“Not right now Raanav”
“I was trying to do a favor, I didn’t want you riding the Metro”
“U should know by now she does care for me one bit. You’ve got to be really dense if you don’t get that by now”
“You are assuming that” he didn’t even sound convincing
“She told me ON MY F-----G face that we don’t have to greet each other or talk to each other and you wanted me to ride with her and you think I imagined it?”
“She was willing to give you a ride Viveka”
“because she wanted to give me the silent treatment”
“there we go again!”
“I am not mad nor am I FIVE Raanav, please don’t try to placate me”
“I am not I am”
“She has not treated me right from day one. I shouldn’t be complaining to you, because…”
“I urged her to? Great!”
“Let me finish you jerk!! I shouldn’t be complaining to you because you didn’t hold a very high opinion of the Mathurs either”
“If you are going to use every damn thing to slam my behavior I can hang up now”
“Your MUM does not like me. I don’t know how many different ways I should tell you that”
“Are you going to avoid seeing her and talking to her the rest of your life?”
“I am certainly not going to ride alone with her” she scoffed
“I can talk to her” he said quietly
“I don’t know why I am even saying this but I have to” she whispered climbing up the stairs going over to the terrace, people were trickling in, these things went all night
The first few hours were rowdy and noisy
Midnight onwards it was mostly book reads or poetry or discussions or people making out and drinking
She was panting
“I thought Nakul was sending you a invite to the Sahitya group I peeked when I was packing my purse this morning I saw your Mom’s text
She tried to hold back tears
“I have spoken to her about it
“Did u arrange for the car ride after that”
“Umm.. no… later”
“How can you even ask me to pretend like we get along Raanav?” she whispered leading over the waist length wall
“My Mum was upset this morning”
“I don’t believe it Raanav, I have been nothing but polite and respectful, I have always received crap.. you know what I don’t have to take it… I don’t want to be treated poorly” she whispered in between soft whimper
“I am telling you she was having a bad morning”
“Does Rakshit get such texts about Lekha?”
Crickets!
“Jaanti hoon main… kam se kam hum dono ko aisi opportunities mat do when we have to interact”
“She doesn’t hate you”
“Did she ask you to tell me that?” she asked sadly
“Can you please not snap back at me like that?”
“I don’t want you speaking on her behalf”
“Back to my Q are you going to run and hide the rest of ur life?”
“Nope… I will confront her Raanav” she said quietly
“But aaj himmat nahi hai I want to relax and have a good time” she said with a wistful look
“I” he began
She just sighed
“I know you guys are close… I know you love her if Ma texted me about you and you happened to see it I would be ashamed but I would try to defend her”
Longish silence….
“You married me you cannot change that… we married because of Dad… I am not the sanest person when it comes to you, I want to be with you Raanav” she whispered
“Why are you being so fatalistic”
“From my vantage point it feels like it might end sooner than I thought it would, and it might end not because of your Dad’s health but because someone else wants a better life for you in which I am not a part of”
