Chapter 68

"Radha?" "LD, I need to think about this. Much as I would love to be with Rupa, it also means that Papa will be around." "So what? Radha you can't keep avoiding Uncle." "LD, it's easy for you to say this. I still can't get over how he treated you." Radha, I love your loyalty. But think Radha, is what Uncle did anywhere near what my family did to you? What I did to you?" "That is different. They hadn't accepted me then. Papa had accepted you. And you reacted the way you did because you didn't know the truth." "Really? Janvi had accepted you, and yet she treated you badly several times." "Janvi is a youngster." "So everyone can have excuses, everyone can be forgiven except Uncle?" He kneels beside her. "Sweetheart, let it go. Please. If not for yourself, then for the children. They have the right to know their grandfather."

"Papa, we are ready!" "Radha think about it and let me know. I'll let Sir know that you are taking the day off." He takes Varun and Charu to the car and drives off. "Bhabhi, I will make a nice raw mango chutney. You can eat it with the rice. It will help with the nausea."

Radha refuses to think about it'. She takes out her knitting patterns and starts on a baby sweater. Then there was another wave of nausea. By lunch time, Radha had barely been able to keep anything down. Sweety calls LD and lets him know. He checks with Vatsala but she doesn't prescribe any medication. "Nausea during pregnancy is a natural phenomenon and we shouldn't interfere with nature. Keep her hydrated and if it doesn't subside by tomorrow bring her in." That wasn't of much comfort to Radha as she rushed to the bathroom yet again.

By evening, LD decided that he wasn't waiting until the morning. Telling the kids that he was taking Mummy to the hospital, he helped Radha to the car and drove to the hospital. "Really, Mr C. After the experience of two pregnancies, I thought you would be used to this by now. You are panicking like a first time expecting father." "She has never had it this bad before." "Stress would have added to her discomfort. Remember, she has been under a lot of stress herself. Anyway, since you have brought her here, I'll put her on a drip. It will rehydrate her."

LD calls Sweety and lets her know that they will be late coming back. She calls back soon. "Bhai, Varun wants to talk to you." "Yes Beta?" "Papa is Mummy going to God?" "No Beta. I'll bring her back before your bed time. I promise you.

While in the hospital, LD gets a call from the Police Station. "Sir, we may have to drop the attempted murder charge against Mr Vikram. Since he called the hospital and police immediately and confesses that he lost control of his car, the investigating team are inclined to go towards dangerous driving." "But what about the fact that he had taken huge commission from suppliers and I had found it out?" "There is no proof that Mr Vikram knew that you had found out about it." "Okay. Truth has a way of coming out. The man is guilty and if you can't prove it, God will." "I am sorry Sir."

By 8, Radha was ready to go. She looked much better. As they drove home, LD was still fuming about Vikram getting away with murder or attempted murder. If he hadn't been an experienced evasion driver, he would have been killed. He wouldn't tell Radha about this. She was stressed as it was. And he wasn't going to press about going to Mumbai for the vacation. Radha's comfort and the baby's wellbeing was now more important than anything else.

When they get home, the children are waiting. "Varun was upset and the other children stayed up with him." "Mummy! I missed you. I was afraid you were going to God." "No Varun Beta. I am okay. But Papa has something to tell you." "Children, we are going to have a baby in the house soon." "Really Papa? Where are you getting the baby from?" "The baby is inside Mummy." "Then you won't be able to call us Baby' anymore." "Sadly, I won't. But Mummy needs lots of rest and so you should be good and try not to disturb her while she is resting."

Varun is very quiet.

Chapter 69

Radha notices that Varun is subdued. "Varun, are you okay." To their shock, he bursts into tears. "Beta, what happened. See I brought Mummy back. Why are you crying." "Papa, will you leave us again? Last time after Viv and Sid were born, we never saw you for a long time." Radha is stunned. Her decision had had such a deep impact on Varun. She had had no right to do shake his sense of security. "Varun..." she starts but LD stops her. Placing his hand on Radha's womb he says, "Beta I promise you on this baby that I will never be separated from you all like that again. If I travel without you it will only be for work and I will talk to you every day." Radha puts her hand over LD's and says, "Varun Beta, and I promise you on Baby that I will never separate from Papa again."

Varun wipes his eyes. "Mummy, can I talk to Baby?" "Of course." "Baby, this is your big Bhai Varun and I will always look after you." "Mummy, will I get a sister?" asks Charu hopefully. "I don't know. It depends on what God has planned for us. Now, I think you really need to go to bed. Every evening before sleeping, you can all talk to baby." "I'll settle them in." Sweety has been waiting and helps LD put the children to bed.

When he comes back, Radha has changed and is in bed. "LD, make arrangements for us to go to Mumbai for the vacation." "Are you sure about this?" "Yes. The children need to get used to their own home and it is best that we do it over a couple of vacations before we move back completely. And it would be nice to be around for Rupa. And we need to ask Sweety to come with us." "I'll ask her tomorrow morning. And now my lovely wife, you need to go to bed." "Yes, LD. I will. Thank you for being such a caring husband." "I have to be, when you have trusted me to look after you."

In the morning, LD asks Sweety whether she would be willing to come to Mumbai for the family. "Of course I will. Looking after the children by herself will be difficult for Bhabhi. And it would be nice to be out of the winter cold." LD books the tickets. "Seven tickets Sir? If you need one more we can put you on a group package." "Next year I'll take you up on your offer."

At lunch time, Radha goes to the convent and purchases lots of things to take to Mumbai as gifts. "Child, are you sure about all these purchases? It is going to be very expensive." "Yes, Sister. I am going to give them as gifts and then talk to one of the exclusive boutiques as to whether they would want to sell these. See, Sister the quality is extremely good but the price is high. So this type of products can only be sold in upmarket stores. Let us see how things work out." "God bless you my child." Radha then goes to a children's clothing store and makes her last purchase before returning to work.

"Radha, have you purchased the entire stock from the convent?" "How rude! No I just got some gifts for our friends and some furnishings for our house." "Okay let me carry them inside." "LD, what happened to the Police investigation on Vikram's role in your accident?" LD draws a deep breath. "The Police are not able to prove that Vikram did this deliberately. He was smart and called the police and the hospital immediately and so made it look like an accident." "But what about the fact that you found out about the commission." "No evidence that he knew that I had found out. Radha leave it." "How can I leave it? Someone tried to kill my husband and I am expected to leave it'? I am a woman not a saint. I will not leave it. Vikram would have found out that you had nailed him. We need to talk to the person you talked to." "I have and he refused to answer my questions and now doesn't even take my calls." "I'll talk to him." "No Radha. I don't want you to be stressed." "What is causing me the stress is the fact that the man who tried to kill my husband may get away with it and may try to kill him again. Now will you give me the number or should I start from scratch?" LD sighs. There was no arguing with Radha when she was in that mood. "The number is in my office. I will give it to you tomorrow."

Radha is still seething at dinner time. "Radha, your anger is at Vikram. Why are you letting it affect the children?" "I just can't get over how easily people can get away with murder in this country. But you are right I should not let it affect us here." "Mummy, you didn't drink your milk today." "Thank you for reminding me Varun Beta."

Radha is calm as she is ready to sleep nestled against LD. She will talk to the man tomorrow and get him to tell the truth to the police!

Chapter 70

In the morning Radha is busy with her work. The semester would close by the end of the next week. A few of the staff were leaving and she had to ensure that their checkout formalities were completed before they left. Since she was not going to be here during the vacation, she also had to complete the paperwork for the new staff joining in January. Fortunately, Sameer was going to remain in Coonoor for the vacation and he could oversee the settling in of any early birds. The tricky one was the settling in of Mr Balan. It had taken a lot of persuasion to make him take up the offer.

"I really do not want to return to Coonoor. I lost everything I had there with the breakup of my marriage." "But Sir think of the opportunity you would be giving the children in the school. To be able to learn from a professional. Sir, this would be a big favour that you would be doing your Alma Mater." "Okay Radha. Your powers of persuasion are very strong. I will take up the appointment. But I hope you will be around if I need help." "I will Sir. I will let Mr O'Brien know the good news." Radha smiles as she remembers the conversation.

She dials a number. "Yes Radha?" "The number please." LD sighs. When Radha had not called first thing in the morning, he had thought she had forgotten. But no such luck. He gives her the number. "Be careful, Radha." "I will."

She rings the number she has noted down. "Happy Kids, can I help you?" "I am calling from Coonoor. This is Mrs Radha speaking. You supplied some equipment to our school." "What about that? We have supplied the equipment and received the payment. There is no outstanding on either side and nothing to discuss." "Sir, please wait. You were dealing with a man called Mr Vikram and he tried to kill our Security and Safety Manager when he found about the commission." "Look Madam, we don't know what you are talking about. We have already told the Police that we do not know anything." "But you had a conversation with our security manager. It has been recorded." "That phone had been stolen by one of our disgruntled employees who we had terminated. We are not responsible for his statements." "Sir, do you know that the man Mr Vikram tried to kill has a family? He has four children dependent on him. If he had died what would have happened to them?" The man hangs up on her.

Radha rings up the number again. "Madam, we have nothing more to tell you and if you ring again I will complain to the police." "I don't want you to tell me anything. You will tell the Police yourself. I swear it. The man Vikram tried to kill is my husband, the father of my children. You must have some family, some sister. When something like this happens to their loved ones then you will know the pain. I am not asking you to tell a lie but the truth. Remember my name. I will be after you until you confess the truth. Do not earn the curse of a woman!" She cuts the call and sits back. She had tried and failed. She had let LD down.

"No you haven't. Companies which pay commission and supply poor quality equipment to be used by children have no scruples and you cannot appeal to the moral values when they have none to begin with. Now I am taking you shopping. The banquet is this weekend and the boys would need formal suits and we need to get something nice for Charu. And I cannot ignore my lovely wife can I?" "Let's go LD. I do need some shopping therapy." LD manages to divert Radha's thoughts.

"LD, you are just too good. Let's go home." "Are you okay?" "Yes. I am fine. I have done all that I can and now must leave the rest to God. Varun has exams' and so will be looking out for us and the twins will be excited to see their new suits and Charu will look like a princess in her new dress. I want to get them to try out their clothes."

On the day of the banquet, the children were all dressed up. Varun already shooting up, looking very distinguished. And Charu - she was so pretty - in a few years she was going to be a heart stopper and LD was going to be busy keeping the Romeos away. Viv and Sid looked as handsome as their father. "Now, when you are dressed in suits you have to behave as gentlemen. Which means no running around!"

LD and Radha had settled the children at their table. After the announcements, LD and the children go to the buffet table to serve themselves. Radha was feeling a little giddy and so LD offered to get her a plate.

"You will never succeed in your attempts, Mrs Radha Chaturvedi!" Radha turns on hearing Vikram's voice.

Chapter 71

"You will never succeed in proving that I hit Chaturvedi's car deliberately." "How dare you come here?" "I am Ms Balan's guest." "Hi Radha, how is it going with your morning sickness." "I think I am managing quite well, Brenda. My husband takes such excellent care of me." "Oh yes! That does make a big difference. Mine must be wondering as to what happened to me. I better go." Radha sees Vikram eyes focused on her covered midriff. "Don't you dare look at me with your dirty eyes unless you want to go blind. Get out of here before my husband comes back and kills you."

Vikram snorts but leaves. LD returns with the children and finds Radha a bit flushed. "Are you okay." "Yes. I just saw a rat." "A rat? In the banquet hall?" "The two-legged variety. Vikram was here and made it a point to let me know that he was around." "I am sorry you had to deal with him on your own." "Let us talk about something nice LD. Forget about Vikram. You got me some Rasmalai. How lovely. I will start with that." LD smiles indulgently. He slips off the Rasmalai from his own plate and onto Radha's plate while she had turned to help Viv with his food.

After dinner, they stay back for some of the items in the program but when Viv and Sid start to droop, they decide to call it a night. In a week's time they would be back home. Radha starts. Mumbai was back to being home' for her.

"Sir, it is so good to see you. And Master Varun has grown so much. And twins - they were babies when I saw them last. Madam, Charu has grown into a pretty girl. Jyothi is excited that you brought the children this time." "Ranjeet, meet Sweety. She helps us with the children in Coonoor." "Namasteji. I hope you enjoy Mumbai."

When they reach home, Varun remembers the house. "Papa, this is where we lived for some time." "Yes and you know what? Raj Dada and Lata Dadi live next door. And you can go through the gate in the compound wall to visit them." But Dadaji and Dadima were not in their house. They were waiting in the Chaturvedi's house to welcome them. Lata does the aarthi for the family.

Radha and Sweety help the children wash up and change. After tea, the children go next door, while Radha unpacks with Sweety's and Jothy's help. LD sets up his office room. At dinner time, LD and Radha walk over to Raj Uncle's house for dinner.

The next morning, Radha visits Easha and gives her what she had picked up at the convent for her. "Radha these are really good. I wish I could come and have a look." "You are always welcome to visit us. I am going to talk to the store which markets Didi's jewellery to see if they are interested." "Let me know how it goes. How are things between you and LD?" "All well. I guess I over reacted a bit." "I hate to say I told you so' but I am so glad for you. I did feel very sorry for LD. Kabir is into full time production of television material. Tourist spots, historical places, cuisine etc. Raveena is working with him on one of the series Fusion cooking'. It is doing very well." "I am happy for her. I am taking it easy this week. Just visiting friends and family. Rupa's baby is due at any time now. We'll be visiting Renuka Aunty tomorrow evening." "I'll come by in the evening to see the children. Where are they?" "With their grandparents." "Oh great. Things are okay between you and your parents also." "No they are with Raj Uncle and Lata Aunty. It is still difficult for me." "Well at least you are back with LD. He is besotted with you." Radha is about to say something when she hears LD come in.

"Hi Easha. How are you?" "Very happy that you have sorted out things with Radha. I hope you behave for the rest of your life. This type of drama is not good for my heart." "Nothing will happen to your heart. It is too good. Radha, are you ready to go to the doctor's?" "Yes, LD. Okay Easha. I'll see you tomorrow."

Dr Shivani had been surprised to see that Radha Chaturvedi on her patient list for the day. Her appointment is scheduled for 11 a.m. and it was almost time. "Next patient, Sister." Radha walks in with LD behind her. "Radha and LD how nice to see you together. Can I assume that you are reconciled?" "Yes Doctor. And Radha and I are expecting a baby. Doctor she had complications last time and so since we were here in Mumbai, I felt it best for her to have a check-up with you."

"You haven't changed a bit LD. Always hovering around Radha. Radha come this way." "Okay. You are good for now. Some results are due tomorrow. LD why don't you come by tomorrow? There is no need for Radha to suffer this insane traffic." "Sure Doctor," he replies. LD is tense. He hopes there aren't any complications.

Chapter 72

In the morning LD was going to the association and then to meet Dr Shivani. He had arranged for Ranjeet to take Radha to the shop which she hoped would be persuaded to sell the products from the convent. Ranjeet helped her carry the samples in. The showroom manager welcomed her. "Madam, it has been so long since you came here. But there is always demand for your sister-in-law's jewellery line." "I have brought something else that may interest you," and lays out some of the samples. "But Madam will people buy such expensive linen?" "Why don't we talk to the sales personnel. They will have a better idea."

First they go to the linen section as they show the salesgirls the samples. As they are looking at the samples, a young couple comes in. "Look Prakash. Look at those bedsheets. My grandmother had similar sheets in her home. I always promised myself that I would make them for my home but where is the time? We must buy these. What is the price?" "Ma'am these are samples. They are not for sale." The girl is disappointed.

The manager steps in. "Ma'am, these are samples. Have a look at them. If you want them, we can arrange to place orders." The customer goes through the samples and places order to her heart's content. "Is this all you have?" "We have some nightgowns. Have a look." The customer is ecstatic and places orders for those also. After being reassured that the orders would come through shortly, the customer leaves. "Madam Radha, we will keep the samples on display for a couple of weeks and take a final decision on whether we can sell them. In the meantime, we will pay for the samples since they are from a charity." Radha leaves pleased with herself.

LD is not so pleased. Dr Shivani does not have good news for him. "LD, how precious is this baby to you?" "Very precious Doctor. The baby was conceived on the day we reconciled. What is wrong Doctor?" "Radha is not as healthy as she looks. Her blood pressure is much more elevated than I would like it to be. The pregnancy is going to be a very high risk one for Radha. Her tests also show arrhythmia. For any other couple who already have children, I would have recommended a termination. But I know Radha will never agree to one. I have consulted with a cardiologist and though he is not happy to give a recommendation without seeing the patient, he feels with constant monitoring we should be able to pull Radha through. I have put the recommendations in this file for Dr Vatsala in Coonoor including the tests she needs to do for Radha on a fortnightly basis. The test results are to be sent to Dr Desai. I know her personally and that is the only reason that I am allowing you to go back to Coonoor. LD this means that absolutely no stress for Radha. And certainly no stunts like the one that you pulled last time." "Never again Doctor. Never again will I hurt my Radha."

The next day, they get the news that Anila passed away during the night and the final rites were being held immediately. Her family was insisting that her son perform the last rites for her, Raj Uncle told LD. "I do not know what to do. Her relatives are here and refusing to go without Varun. Especially since her daughter succumbed to dengue last year and she has no other children. Can you and Radha come over." LD and Radha listen to Anila's relatives patiently.

LD is still undecided. Radha steps in. "Varun can go. But only if his brothers and Papa also go with him." "Radha, why do you want Viv and Sid to go?" "Because they are Varun's brothers and they should always be with him as he is always with them. They are brothers and should always be together." "Okay Madam. They can all come." "Radha, we need white clothes for the children." "I already bought them some when in Coonoor." "How come?" "I was expecting this news to come when we were going to be here and so I was prepared. I made the purchases after finishing shopping at the convent."

As Raj Uncle and LD take the boys, Lata decides to stay on in the Chaturvedi house until they come back. Sipping a cup of herbal tea, Radha positions herself where she can see the car returning. "Radha, why don't you rest? You look a little tried." There was no reply from Radha. "Radha?" "Yes Aunty?" "I suggested that you rest for a while since you look a little tried." "No Aunty. I have to be here when Varun returns. He will need me." Lata is amazed. Radha had three children of her own and yet cared for Varun as her own son. Varun was lucky indeed. He would never have got this much love from his real parents.

Half an hour later the car turns in. Jyothi opens the door and Varun runs straight into Radha's arms and buries his head in her shoulder.

"Varun Beta, you should not hug Radha like this."
